Ray Bizer, Pastor Emeritus Pastoral Assistant, Janet Sherman L.M. ======================== ===================================== ============ As I sat in the church office this morning a storm rolled in, thunder rumbled, the skies turned dark, the rain came down in sheets. I opened up the blinds to let all this wash over me and went outside to feel the wind. Then I returned to reading "Listening for the Heartbeat of God: A Celtic Spirituality by J. Philip Newell. He was lifting up the words of George MacLeod and one of his prayers entitled "Glory in the Grey". Almighty God... Sun behind all suns, Soul behind all souls,... show to us in everything we touch and in everyone we meet the continued assurance of thy presence round us, lest we should think thee absent. In all created things thou art there. In every friend we have the sunshine of thy presence is shown forth. In every enemy that seems to cross our path, thou art there within the cloud to challenge us to love. Show to us the glory in the grey. Awake for us thy presence in the very storm till all our joys are seen as thee and all our trivial tasks emerge as priestly sacraments in the universal temple of thy love. It is indeed a challenge to see the "glory in the grey". It is a challenge to see "the sunshine of God's presence in every enemy that crosses our path." In these polarized dark times can we sense God's call to "love". When we watch the news or go on facebook do dark thoughts fill our hearts, souls and minds? Do clouds form as we listen to someone with opposing views on religion, politics or the world? We do not have to accept everything or even always let certain views go unchallenged but will sense God in our midst "challenging us to love"? Beyond this can we even begin to see the "trivial tasks emerge as priestly sacraments"?

Memorial Service for Lucile Marburger May 16th at 1 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Faith UCC on Wednesday, May 16th at 1 p.m. for Lucile Marburger who passed away on Friday, April 27th. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Marburger Family. Lucile Miriam Pfluger Marburger, a beloved light in her family and community, passed away on April 28th, 2018, in New Braunfels, TX, at the age of 100. Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward D. (Tony) Marburger, brother Charles Pfluger & wife Delma, and brother-in-law, Kermit Westerholm. She is survived by sons Gary Marburger and Alan Marburger; grandchildren Sara Espinoza & husband Joey, Josh Marburger, Eric Marburger & wife Hannah, Kelly Marburger; greatgrandchildren Risa, Micah, and Jace Espinoza; sister, Carolyn Westerholm, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lucile, daughter of Carl and Lillie (Polzin) Pfluger, was born on March 8, 1918 in Coupland, TX. As a young child, she moved with her family to Taylor, TX, Los Angeles, TX, and then Bishop, TX, where she graduated as valedictorian. In 1940, she earned a degree in Home Economics from the University of Texas, and took a teaching job in Refugio, TX. She and Tony found each other there. Both born and baptized in Coupland. their lives came together. The two raised their family in Houston, while building a successful insurance business with State Farm, and, upon retirement, built a home in Fischer, TX, where she and Tony remained dedicated to extensive community service. Lucile was an early member of Faith United Church of Christ, early member of Canyon Lake Republican Women, Founding member of the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country, member of the New Braunfels Area Quilters Guild, member of the Fischer Store School Community Center, and numerous charitable and social organizations, such as PTA, Scouts, Little League, Meadowbrook Garden Club, and church activities, such as women s circle and junior Sunday school teacher and sponsor at First Evangelical Church, Houston. She was a gifted painter and quilter, who gave and shared her art for causes and as gifts to her friends and family. For her dedication, Lucile was named as First Lady of the year by Beta Sigma Phi in 1999, and received numerous awards for her painting and quilting, being recognized in and outside the State. Despite these lauds, she was never one to seek public attention, and will always be remembered for her quiet acts of hospitality and generosity. A memorial service will be held at Faith United Church of Christ in New Braunfels at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16th, with a reception following from 2:00 to 3:00 in the fellowship hall. The public is invited to attend, but seating will be limited, and the family acknowledges with gratitude that many recently honored Lucile with their presence at her 100th birthday event. In lieu of flowers, (and to honor her ever-generous spirit), donations may be made to: Faith United Church of Christ - New Braunfels, Hope Hospice New Braunfels, and Family Promise of Greater New Braunfels Inc..

Heart of Texas Association News Our Heart of Texas Association gathering on April 22nd at Friends Congregational UCC in College Station was an outpouring of generosity. The potluck project of bringing supplies for hygiene kits and assembling them for Back Bay Mission resulted in 77 kits, enthusiastically assembled at the end of the meeting. We voted to pay up to $300 to buy supplies to complete the kits that didn t have the full list of supplies, but our expenditure from Association funds will be much less because of another generous gift -- Linda Oberhoff presented the payments in the lunch basket, meant to reimburse Friedens Washington for the delicious lunch they provided, as a gift toward completing the hygiene kits. A member of Friends Congregational obtained a donation of nice cloth bags for the kits, bags that can be reused by the homeless folks who receive these kits from Back Bay Mission. We also had a group who drove 4 hours each way from St. Paul Corpus Christi, a generous gift of time to be with us, much appreciated by everyone there. Of course, we also deeply appreciate the gift Friends gave by hosting us when Weimar s building was not ready, and Dan DeLeon s gift of an inspiring opening worship. We also appreciate the generosity of those who have committed to serve in new ways in the Association. We have three new members on our Committee on Ministry. These include Rev. Cecile Adam, retired Seton Medical Center chaplain (but still very active) and member of Congregational Church of Austin; Rev. Darrin Holub, pastor of Evangelical UCC, Lyons, and Friedens UCC, Gay Hill; and Michelle Dupy, member of St. Peter s Church of Coupland. Rev. John Gage, senior pastor of United Christian Church in Austin, is the new Committee on Ministry chair, and Pastor Cindy Miller of St. John s UCC, Burton, continues as the registrar. Pastor Charlotte Albert of St. Peter s Church of Coupland, came on board as our Association secretary. She joins continuing officers Pastor Janet Sherman of Faith UCC, New Braunfels, as moderator; Linda Coats, member of Friends Congregational UCC, College Station, as vice-moderator; and Joe Ward, member of Faith UCC, New Braunfels, as treasurer. All of our new Committee on Ministry members and our secretary were voted in at our spring meeting. At our recent Committee on Ministry meeting, we had an ordination interview with Will Nelson and have recommended him for ordination, with his Ecclesiastical Council to be held at our fall association meeting. Will is a member of Church of the Savior in Cedar Park, and earned his Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. We will send out his ordination paper in the weeks before the meeting for all to read in preparation. We also welcomed René Slataper, member of Congregational Church of Austin, as a Member in Discernment. René is about to start seminary at Lexington Theological Seminary in their mainly online program. He is the third of our current Members in Discernment to be part of the Lexington program, a historic seminary of the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ that is very welcoming to UCC students, and the fourth to be part of an online program. We congratulate Will and René, and look forward to learning how they will be called to serve in Christ s ministry. I look forward to taking our gift of hygiene kits out to Biloxi, Mississippi to the Back Bay Mission May Board of Directors meeting. I know these gifts will be deeply appreciated. Blessings in Christ, Liz Nash, Association Minister
