Sheehan 2nd Anniversary Mass Please pray for our recently deceased: Jean Morelli Happy 100th birthday to Victor MacIntyre! Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! He has risen! Yes, truly he has risen! This weekend, we celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time (First Holy Communion) for our second grade Faith Formation students. They will encounter Jesus for the first time in the most personal way he left for us to do so, by receiving His Body and Blood. The children traditionally receive the Eucharist in the second grade because they are usually eight years old then. This is important since the Church considers the age of reason to be seven years old. This is why First Reconciliation takes place when it does. The children are old enough to be fully responsible for the sins they confess and they will be in a state of grace when they confess their sins before receiving Holy Communion. Events such as First Communion are very significant in the life of a parish. First and foremost, it places more members of the church in a closer and deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. But there is also more. This event helps each of us to look back to that day in each of our own lives. As we do, we do well to review our personal journey of faith we have made since the day we reached that milestone. We are also able to see the anticipation in the children s eyes and faces as their big moment draws closer and closer. We do well to take note of this and ask if we ourselves anticipate the reception of Jesus Christ Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Eucharist as much as they do. As I mention this, I certainly do not mean that we are to have exactly the same expression and disposition of the children. However, we are to constantly remind ourselves that we will be encountering Jesus in the most personal manner possible in this life. As we do, we are able to have the sense just how close God is to us and desires to be in relationship with us. In return, we recognize how we are called to be more Christ-like by remembering how the host we received is actually becoming a part of our very bodies. The grace received from this sacrament is to be used to give witness to Jesus Christ in all we think, say, and do. As we watch, marvel at, and pray for the students of the First Communion Class, we ask God to watch over and bless them. Let us also use this wonderful event in our parish as a means to renew our own appreciation and dedication when we receive Jesus Christ in Holy Communion. Gratefully yours in the Risen Christ, Fr. Steve
