ORDO EQUESTRIS SANCTI SEPULCRI HIEROSOLYMITANI Southeastern Lieutenancy Of the United States Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem NEWS Sir Anthony J. Capritto, III, KGCHS, Lieutenant September, 2011 Volume 24, No. 3 James T. Myers, KC*HS, Editor Order Has A New Grandmaster Archbishop Edwin F. O Brien of Baltimore has been selected by Pope Benedict as the Pro-Grand Master to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He will replace the retired Cardinal John P. Foley. He began the announcement Monday with a prayer to the Holy Spirit and read his letter of acceptance to the Holy Father: With deep gratitude do I accept your nomination of me to serve as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. I pray that I will carry out the will of God and that of Your Holiness in preserving the Faith and defending the sacred places in the Holy Land... Since the appointment as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order usually falls to a Cardinal of the Church there is little doubt that this Archbishop will receive the honor of the Cardinal s red hat at the next consistory. Archbishop O Brien is 72 years old and has led a life of exemplary service to the Lord and His Church. Prior to his appointment to the Baltimore Archdiocese in 2007, Archbishop O Brien served for ten years as the head of the Archdiocese for the Military Services. He also served as a chaplain at the United States Military Academy in West Point and in Vietnam. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1965 and had a distinguished record of academic service as the rector of St. Joseph s Seminary in New York and the Pontifical North American College in Rome. 1

Archbishop Hughes Homily Mass for the Deceased Members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre On Saturday of Investiture Weekend May 28, 2011 This afternoon we gather to pray for all the deceased members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, especially those of our Lieutenancy who have died in the past year. This provides a graced opportunity to pray for them and to remind ourselves to live our lives in this world in light of our death and the hereafter. In the moment of death our whole life comes into sharp focus. In that last human act in this world, we are given the opportunity to give ourselves back to God in a final self-gift. If we have truly lived in preparation for that moment, the Lord will welcome us into heaven. If we have refused to serve anyone but ourselves, we will be incapable of heaven and condemn ourselves to hell. Most of us hope to reach that moment when our complete surrender to God will necessitate some further purification. We call this purgatory. It is this latter scenario that occasions our commitment today to pray for our brother knights and sister ladies who may need further purification before entering the joy of heaven. Job, as we heard in our first reading, experienced the loss of so much of what he called dear: his family, his human possessions, his health, even his good reputation. For some death comes suddenly. For many, the hardest part of dying is the gradual loss of health, personal dignity, human relationship. No matter what our circumstances may be, with Job, we hope to be able to say: But as for me, I know that my Vindicator lives... from my flesh I shall see God: my inmost being is consumed in longing. (Continued on Page Three) SAVE THE DATE 2012 ANNUAL MEETING INTERCONTINTAL HOTEL ATLANTA, GEORGIA APRIL 20 22 2

Archbishop Hughes Homily Continued We also hope to hear the words of St. John provided us in the second reading today: Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on! Yes said the Spirit, let them rest from their labor, for their works accompany them. We who have served as active members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre hope also to hear the Lord declare at the end of our lives that we are blessed because we remained poor in spirit even while possessing a sufficiency of this world s goods, by sacrificing that young people in the Holy Land might have Catholic education or social services or health care. We want to be declared blessed because we have mourned or sympathized with those who live in life or death circumstances. We want to be declared merciful because of our willingness to assist the families of even those who sometimes thwart the search for peace in the Mid East. We want to be declared pure or undivided in heart in our pursuit for what is good, true, just and beautiful in a land often torn asunder by strife and conflict. We want to be declared blessed because we may have absorbed insult or ingratitude even as we remained focused on our mission. Each of us finds himself or herself at a different moment in our lives. With retirement from office, but not from priesthood, I find myself in the last stage of my life. I do not know what lies ahead, but I pray for the grace to accept whatever suffering may be involved as a redemptive offering to the Father in union with the Lord Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit for my sins and the sins of those God has asked me to serve. This Mass, then, is a moment for us all to pause in prayer. We pray for those who have preceded us in completing their pilgrimage on earth. We pray for ourselves that we may make that journey with a lively faith, an earnest hope and an expanding love. We also recognize at this Eucharist those who have been faithful to the responsibilities of the Order and urge them on to greater service. Finally, we pray for those who will be invested tomorrow. May we be knights of courage and ladies of virtue in the fulfillment of our noble mission to the people of the land of our Lord. +++ PILGRIM SHELL MINIATURES For your information, Pilgrim Shell Miniatures are available from Stange Company.
