Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion A question arose in the case of Reuven, who came from America to visit Eretz Yisrael. He got into a cab at the airport and asked the driver to take him to his destination, which was just 20 minutes away. Halfway through the journey, the driver remarked that he had forgotten to turn on the meter. I ll charge you just 70 dollars for the trip, the driver remarked, as if it was a bargain, while the trip really should not have cost more than 20 dollars, as Reuven well knew. Reuven sat there quietly in the back seat, and made no attempt to argue with the price. He just took a hundred dollar bill out of his pocket, and held it to the driver to see. Then, by the time they reached their destination, the hundred- dollar bill had disappeared! Reuven started searching through his bags in the crack behind the seat cushion, on the floor and all over the place, but he could not find the money. Could you please lend me a flashlight to look for the money? he asked, but the driver did not have one in the car. Okay, I ll go inside the house and get one. Wait here just a minute. Reuven got out with his bags and went into the house, but the driver didn t wait for him to return. With the 100 dollar bill still lost somewhere in the car, he sped off chuckling to himself that he managed to get a 100 dollars not just 70 for a 20 dollar ride. Afterwards, Reuven s conscience bothered him, so he went to ask a rav what to do. You feel guilty about not paying the driver, after he drove off with your 100 dollar bill? asked the rav. Well, not exactly, answered Reuven. I saw who I was dealing with, and decided to teach him a lesson. I put the 100 dollars back in my pocket and pretended to have dropped it. I suspected he would drive off in hopes of stealing it, as indeed he did, but there was no 100 dollars in the car. In the end, I did not pay him anything at all for the trip, even the 20 dollars that he really deserved. Should I try to find him to pay him the 20 dollars, or does he deserve to be cheated for trying to cheat me? What is the answer? Find out at Shalosh Seuda with Rabbi Rothman
