S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 The Feast of Epiphany January 6, 2019 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b PRELUDE: Epiphany Suite Paul Tate We stand. ISAIAH 60:1-3 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2 For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. 3 Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. arr. Mark Bender RESPONSE: Brightest and Best ELW Hymn 303, stanzas 1-2 ISAIAH 60:4-5 4Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. 5 Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.

RESPONSE: Brightest and Best ELW Hymn 303, stanza 3 ISAIAH 60:6 6A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. RESPONSE: Brightest and Best ELW Hymn 303, stanza 4 DIALOGUE The star shone bright in the Bethlehem sky. We too have a star to guide us. The shepherds ran to see the babe. We too have a star to guide us. The magi knelt at the child's feet. We too have a star to guide us. Christ shines with God's own truth and light. We too have a Star to guide us. GATHERING SONG: As with Gladness Men of Old ELW Hymn 302 GREETING God who sent the Light into our world, who shone in the Bethlehem manger, and who spreads the Spirit's rays, be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit.

READING: EPHESIANS 3:1-12 1 This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles 2 for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given me for you, 3 and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, 4 a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. 5 In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6 that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s grace that was given me by the working of his power. 8 Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. We stand. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 2:1-12 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. 7Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. SERMON We sit. We stand. HYMN OF THE DAY: I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light ELW Hymn 815 THE NICENE CREED: Located on the inside back cover of your hymnal PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with, Lord, in your mercy, to which the people will respond: Hear our prayer. GREETING OF PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM: The Magi Who to Bethlehem The magi who to Bethlehem did go were the heralds of the coming Messiah; and with joy we also would hasten to announce the good news. Ah! From a distant land we come with humble greeting, where the eastern star our caravan is leading. Ever-shining star, God s brilliant dawn revealing, ever guide our way, God s presence still assuring. Glory be to God, who sent the child of heaven, glory be to God, and peace to all on earth. To the newborn child, who has no earthly treasure, I have come with gold to bring delight and pleasure. Ever-shining star, God s brilliant dawn revealing, ever guide our way, God s presence still assuring. Glory be to God, who sent the child of heaven, glory be to God, and peace to all on earth. To the child of God rich incense I am bringing, with aroma sweet that heavenward is winging. Ever-shining star, God s brilliant dawn revealing, ever guide our way, God s presence still assuring. Glory be to God, who sent the child of heaven, glory be to God, and peace to all on earth. To the child who came to bring us heaven s gladness, I have come with myrrh, a sign of coming sadness. Ever-shining star, God s brilliant dawn revealing, ever guide our way, God s presence still assuring. Glory be to God, who sent the child of heaven, glory be to God, and peace to all on earth. Nancy Raabe

OFFERTORY SONG: The First Noel ELW Hymn 300 OFFERTORY PRAYER THE GREAT THANKSGIVING ELW page 152 8:30: Spoken 11:00: Sung THE LORD S PRAYER ELW page 154 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

LAMB OF GOD HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to commune. Communion will be received at the altar rail by intinction; we receive the consecrated bread and dip it into the chalice. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone; however, gluten free wafers and grape juice are available. Please let the Pastor or Lay Assistant know of your need.

COMMUNION HYMN COMMUNION HYMN: This Little Light of Mine ELW Hymn 677 We stand. POST-COMMUNION BLESSING AND PRAYER O Lord, you look upon us in love and refresh our souls through the gifts of bread and wine. Send us out, reflecting the light of your grace, to tell the story of Jesus Christ, our bright morning star. Amen.

BENEDICTION Beloved children of God, what came into being in Christ was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. May the light of Christ shine on you with grace and mercy and fill you with joy and peace. (John 1:1, 3-5) Amen. SENDING SONG: Rise, Shine, You People! DISCIPLES BIBLE STUDY We will resume on January 7 and will be starting the GOSPEL OF LUKE. This is the Gospel that will be primarily used during this liturgical year (Year C). Come and journey with us! Mondays, at 11:00 a.m. or Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. ALL ARE WELCOME! LUTHERAN MEN Please join the Lutheran Men for faith and fellowship on January 8, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall for dinner. All men are welcomed to join us. Please bring a friend or bring your child...we will have a children's table as well. If it's your first dinner with us (or first one in a long time) then dinner is on us! We typically ask for a $5 donation for dinner. Our meal will be hosted by Steve Slice (and he's a pretty good cook). Come join us to break some bread and some chops as we share our Faith Journeys and find ways to support our congregation.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL Once again this year we are asking the congregation to write devotions for our daily devotional booklet. This practice has proven to be one the congregation enjoys and those who choose to write have really enjoyed being a part of the process. The Holy Spirit stirs up faith in each of us when we choose to study the Word and respond. This year, Ash Wednesday is on March 6 so the devotional passages will be due on February 17. Please consider being a part of this even if you ve never participated in the past. Please let Sandra Holland know if you are willing to write a devotional and she will assign you a verse. NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The nursery team is looking to add some new faces! If you love spending time with little ones from birth to 4 years old, this is the job for you! Having nursery duty involves spending time with some of our littlest Lutherans while they play during the 11:00 a.m. service, as well as some special services throughout the year. Duty days are scheduled at the beginning of the year and the schedule will be distributed in January. You do not need to have children attending the nursery in order to participate in nursery duty! Each family is typically scheduled for about 3 duty days per year. If you are interested in joining this ministry or have any questions, please contact Kelly Williams at (315) 383-3612 or moses3611@yahoo.com. YOGA MINISTRY IN JANUARY Come and join certified yoga instructors Vicky Saye Henderson, Pastor Doug Graul, and Pastor Linda Anderson for prayerful, spirit-filled weekly yoga classes at St. Andrew's. These all-levels classes are great for both those new to yoga as well as seasoned practitioners, and will incorporate mindfulness, breath, movement and postures. Wednesdays, January 9, 16, 23 and 30 5:45-7:00 PM (75 minutes) All classes are FREE and designed to gently stretch and strengthen you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Yoga has also been found to reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia; improve energy levels and one's ability to focus and feel more present; increase physical flexibility; and build community. Bring a yoga mat if you have one, otherwise there will be several extra mats on hand. Invite and bring a friend, family member, colleague or neighbor! Questions? Contact Vicky for more info at (803) 269-3416. BACKPACK PACKING We will be packing food for the month of January today after the 11:00 a.m. service. Please plan to stop by the tables in the narthex or parlor and help pack! Thank you for your continued support of this ministry and for helping to feed hungry children in our community. We truly could not make this happen without you!
