Wesley Connector MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF WESLEY CHAPEL UMC FEBRUARY 2017 Holy Communion Holy Communion should be a time of silent reflection. The Lord s Supper should be the body of Christ understanding who they are. The Eucharist should include meaningful liturgy that explains the sacrament. The Great Thanksgiving should be the celebration of our victory in Jesus death and resurrection. Perhaps you come to the breaking of the bread and the lifting of the cup a certain way based on your tradition or experience. We give it different names. We have different feelings about how this sacrament should be done. We have opinions about who should participate and what the participants are to do while they participate. I recently led Holy Communion for a gathering of about 100 United Methodist ministers. I focused on the celebration style and less on self-reflection. Some loved what I did. Some criticized what I didn t do. I honored the sacrament and proclaimed the power of Jesus death and resurrection. Some ministers did not appreciate upbeat music while they took the bread and the juice. Holy Communion continued WARNING! Wesley Chapel, I want you to be prepared for 2017 Holy Communion. This is the year of celebration for 200 years of Wesley Chapel. We plan to celebrate Holy Communion by singing praises to God while we receive the bread and the juice. We will celebrate what God has done from the first day until now. We will celebrate what God is doing in the life of our congregation today. We will celebrate that God will be at work in us until the work is complete. The only exception will be our Maundy Thursday Worship in April. It will be a service of self-reflection and prayer as we remember the last night of Jesus life. He led the disciples in a new form of the Exodus meal that would become for us the Last Supper or Holy Communion. He would invite his disciples to pray with him in a garden. That service will be April 13, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Every other Holy Communion service will be joyful as we celebrate God and God s faithfulness to Wesley Chapel. Grace and Peace, Pastor Tony Celebrate Missions Have you ever wondered about the impact Wesley Chapel makes for the Gospel outside of our four walls? Then be sure to join us on Saturday, March 4 as we Celebrate Missions! This will be a great opportunity to see how God is moving in the mission field, to meet many of our ministry partners, and to learn how you can get ENGAGED! The event will be from 5:00-7:00 pm in the Wesley Center. Our partners will be present to talk with you about their ministries. We will have a time of worship, and the Youth Group will be providing food as a fundraiser for this year s Mission Trip. We look forward to seeing you there! Call to Service Serving People would like to celebrate the call of Madison Atkinson. Madison will be participating in a three-month internship in Hungary with OMS. OMS is one of the leading missionary placement agencies in the United States that places missionaries around the world. Please pray for Madison and this opportunity to serve as a missionary. Marriage Tip From a participant of the Ten Great Dates class: It is February, the month of love! Be your spouse's filling, spackling, and caulk with grace and love!! You know their strengths and their weaknesses, as they do yours; don't dwell on the shortcomings. Complete the void to make the relationship a whole union! Page 2

"Kick in the Pants On Saturday, March 11 the Wesley Chapel Women s Ministry Team is sponsoring Kick in the Pants Mission Morning from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in the Wesley Center. Bring your own lunch. Start collecting basic necessities to bring for donation: feminine hygiene products; diapers, and toilet paper. Bring scissors and denim material or old jeans - any color. We will be making Sole Hope shoes for children in Africa with the jean material. Visit http://solehope.org/ for more Information about Sole Hope. Childcare will be provided - bring your child's lunch. Visit wesleychapel.org/ womens-ministry/ to sign up or contact Rhonda Alstott 812.944.1811. Come fellowship and work together! You are so generous toward the WAY forward capital campaign. We are officially seven months into the campaign and you are giving slightly ahead of schedule. So far we have received $197,397 of the pledged amount of $765,028. Some of this giving came from people who did not pledge but gave toward the campaign anyway. Thank you to those who pledged and gave and to those who did not pledge and gave. One of the positive consequences of your generosity is that, as your pastor, I can focus on making disciples and caring for our church family instead of being concerned about the mortgage. Thank you for your partnership in this wonderful ministry God has entrusted us with. As we celebrate the 200 years of ministry at Wesley Chapel, you have put us in a position to Carry It On! May the work that God is doing in us continue to impact our community today and future generations. Etiquette Class and Formal Dinner On Wednesday, February 8 during Revive, the youth will be learning all about etiquette. Then on Saturday, February 11 at 6:00 pm they will have a formal dinner at the church. Since it is formal, ladies are to wear dresses and gentlemen are to wear suits (if possible). Reservations are required. Reservations can be made at wesleychapel.org/youth or by calling Dennis Shireman at 812.944.2570. Mini-Marathon Fundraiser Are you planning to run or walk in the Derby Mini-marathon on April 29? Find out how your participation can help raise funds for our youth program. Contact Dennis Shireman at youth@wesleychapel.org for details. Confirmation Confirmation classes will begin on Sunday, February 19 at 9:45 am in room 203. Confirmation will be on Sunday, May 21. Any student who is in grade 6-12 who has not completed confirmation is welcome to attend. For more information contact Dennis Shireman at youth@wesleychapel.org. New Sermon Series March 1 - April 2 Celebrate Hope: We all are fighting battles. Some battles are with circumstances or other people. Some battles are within us. We will explore how our hope is in Jesus who helps us through every battle. April 9-30 Celebrate Resurrection: The greatest event in history is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We will explore the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and what that means to us today. Page 3
