Page 2 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News December 30, 2018 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Christmas celebrates the Incarnation, the en-flesh-ment of God as a human person. In Jesus, God is bodily present in the human story. Today we honor the Holy Family, helping us to see that God is active in daily family life. God is near at hand, amidst the tensions, joys, and uncertainties of family life. As our Gospel passage describes, even with family miscommunications and with limited understanding of Jesus mission, the Holy Family persevered in their life together. Like many family conflicts, there was no immediate or clear resolution of the issues raised by Jesus and by Mary. God s intentions for the family, and for Jesus, were still unfolding. They continued to stay connected with each other and with God. Within the turbulence of family life, they trusted God to actively sustain and guide them into an uncertain future. We are invited to follow their example. HANNAH AND MARY The story of Hannah and her son Samuel in today s reading from 1 Samuel was especially important for Luke s Gospel. The passage describes the presentation of young Samuel to the priest Eli as part of the story of the faith of Hannah. Hannah had been in great suffering, as she had long desired to have a son, and saw this as central to her vocation and identity. Hannah s deep honesty with God during her distress, together with her confident persistence in prayer, reveals her as a model of faith. Luke links Hannah to Mary through the Magnificat song in Luke 1, which mirrors Hannah s joyous song in 1 Samuel 2. Luke links young Samuel to Jesus, through the presentation in the Temple in Luke 2. Please pray for the following priests this week: Dec 30 Rev. Christopher Thiel, O.F.M. Cap., St. Francis High School, La Canada Flintridge Dec 31 Rev. Arturo Valadez, St. Didacus Catholic Church, Sylmar For Schedule of Baptism Seminars and Baptisms, please contact the Parish Office at:(818) 341-3680 or email: secretary@sjeparish.net For those baptizing at another parish and taking the Baptism Seminar here, the fee is $25 per couple No Baptism Seminars in December Luke is suggesting that God is up to something big. Just as Samuel initiated a turning point in Israel s history, Jesus is about to open a new chapter in human history. Their stories are rooted in the remarkable faith of their mothers, Hannah and Mary. WEAVING THE STORY Today s passage from Luke is the only story about Jesus in the Gospels that occurs between Jesus infancy and his adult ministry. Luke uses the story to weave these elements together. This story, like all the infancy passages, emphasizes that Jesus was born Son of God. Jesus first spoken words in Luke conclude with I must be in my Father s house. God is his Father, and Jesus speaks as God s Son. Luke connects the future ministry of Jesus with the scene at the temple with the teachers. Jesus listeners are astounded at his wisdom. This anticipates similar scenes as an adult. Luke also subtly hints at Jesus resurrection, with details such as the question why were you looking for me? similar to why do you seek the living one among the dead? Luke invites us to see his Gospel as an integrated whole, weaving together Jesus birth, life, death, and resurrection. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at the conclusion of the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Join us for an hour of tranquility in the company of the Lord. Benediction is at 6:00 p.m. No Hospitality today, Happy New Year! Nellie Newman, Phil McManama & Olivia Kelly S.H. Ministry

Classes resume on Monday, January 7, 2019. SAVE THE DATE: ST. JOHN EUDES SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Sunday, January 27, 2019 10:00am - 1:00pm We Are Family On the feast of the Holy Family, it is tempting to compare our own families to the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Luke s narrative of the twelve year old Jesus in the temple is not a warning for parents to watch their children closely while travelling. The story looks forward to the time Jesus would be lost in the tomb after his crucifixion. Just as his parents found him on the third day, so Jesus would rise from the dead on the third day. And Jesus remark, I must be in my Father s house (Lk 2:49) gives us a hint at who is Jesus family. Luke was well aware that the Temple was considered God s dwelling place. So to call it his Father s house showed that Jesus was the Son of God. Like Jesus, we call God our father, and like Jesus, we are part of a larger family than the one we live with. But remember Jesus was 12 in this part of the gospel. So his duty to God included being obedient to his parents. We too have a tension between obedience to our parents and following God s call, a tension between taking care of our children and giving time to God s children in the church and the community. Let us ask God to help us appreciate what our family obligations really are. 1st Year Confirmation program January 6, 4:00pm Grill Hall 2nd Year Confirmation program January 13, 4:00pm Grill Hall January 14, 7:00pm Parent Meeting, In Church Retreat/Confirmation Details Announced For more information call Edgar Contreras at 818-341-3680 and ask for ext. 121.

Page 7 With Burning Hearts We Proclaim the Good News December 30, 2018 DATES: Jan. 9, 2019 to Feb. 13, 2019 PLACE: Room AB, Grill Hall TIME: 9:15 to 11:30 AM (Wed. mornings) If you think the Church of the twenty-first century has multiple serious problems, dip into the two letters of Paul and come out dripping with conflicts and controversies galore. The Corinth community was characterized by rivalry, obsession with status and superior wisdom, disregard for the less spiritually gifted and poor, sexual immorality, assertiveness regarding individual rights, and a disdainful attitude toward Paul. That s the bad news. But the Good news is that we learn what contributes to inauthentic Christian living today and what promotes our own continued transformation in light of the Gospel. Call or e-mail: Cristina Kaloustian at: mcristinak@yahoo.com Phone: (818) 993-1900 Roy/Adele Vargas at: roynadelevargas@gmail.com Phone: (805) 744-1004 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind! ATTENTION MEN: Annual Men's Retreat, February 1-3, 2019, "Finding Our Way At first, Christians were called "followers of the Way" to witness to a new way of life and a new way of being in the world. We are made for these times and challenged to be Ambassadors of Christ Jesus. This is not for the weak hearted but for those who desire to make a difference in the world. FOR SEVENTY FIVE YEARS, the beauty of Malibu AND SERRA RETREAT HAVE provided the perfect setting to pause awhile, recognize our true calling on earth and be encouraged by other travelers on the Way. WHERE ARE YOU ON THE WAY? For reservation applications: call Serra Retreat at 310-456-6631 or email: serraretreat.com. In an overwhelming number of those cases, a parent, relative, or close friend is behind the wheel. It s devastating to think that a simple action could cause such harm to your child, but it happens far too frequently. Be aware of your blind spots when you re behind the wheel those areas you know are there, but can t see clearly from your mirrors. Check out what s happening around your vehicle before you get in. Make sure you know where your children are before you start your car.
