What s all the fuss about Godparents? In understanding what Sacraments are, it is important to explain what they are not. First of all, they are not acts of private devotion. They are communal celebrations of the presence of God in our lives and in the life of the Church. This is why Sacraments are always celebrated in a Church, because that is where the community of faith gathers. Some exceptions are made for the Sacraments of the Sick and Penance. Marriage can be celebrated outside a church when a Catholic is marrying a Jewish person, or for some justifiable reason but only with the permission of the bishop. Because membership in this Community is so important to us, it is necessary that new members (those about to be Baptized) must be sponsored into membership. Godparents are sponsors and members in good standing with the Church and who are agreeing to give children and their parents good example in the faith. It is this fundamental understanding of the responsibility which belongs to the godparent that has been lost and greatly misunderstood by many Catholics today. It might surprise you to know that more than 40% of the kids being confirmed in our parish cannot ask their baptismal godparents to be their sponsor for Confirmation because they are either no longer a member of that family (because of divorce) or are no longer a Catholic (have joined some other church) or simply have dropped out of the Church and the life of that child. Does this mean that we should lower our standards and accept anyone? Let me ask you this question: When, in writing your Will, you named legal guardians for your child in the event of your death, what criteria did you use? Were you just trying to keep the peace in the family or trying not to offend someone who might expect to be asked? The same care should go into choosing the person who will be responsible for the faith of your child. Should your child have some kind of spiritual relationship with their godparents? Should they have someone they can go to with questions about their faith, someone their parents trust and who will not judge them? Every family has had to deal with this, and unfortunately it is not going to get any easier. The sad reality is that we are finding more and more families, do not often practice their Catholic Faith and who want their children baptized. These families are having a difficult time finding anyone in their family (except a grandparent) who qualifies to be a sponsor. And so, if you are given the honor of being a godparent, here is what you need to do according to Cannon (Church) Law: be suitable and willing to fulfill the role of sponsor be not less than 16 years of age and someone who has received both first Eucharist and Confirmation. who lives the life of faith which befits the role of godparent who is registered in a parish and who faithfully participates in the Eucharist on Sundays and Holy Days who, if married, has been married according to the laws of the Catholic Church and, is living a life of good moral example. In other words, a sponsor must be willing to walk the walk, and talk the talk. But, most importantly, the Sponsor is making a commitment to the child and is willing to lead this child to holiness, even if the parents fail in their responsibility. Crisis in the Church Fr. Jack On Sunday, Sept. 16 th we had a very helpful open meeting of parishioners who wanted to come together to speak about the latest sexual abuse crisis our Church. The next open meeting will be held on Thursday, October 25 th at 7 PM in the Parish Center. Our purpose is not to correct, to judge or to excuse anyone, but to listen honestly to each other. All are welcome. 2
