2018 Cover Photo Hey Folks, 2018 was a fantastic trip! After 16 years of traveling the rural countryside of Central Afghanistan, year 17 was as fresh as my 1 st year in so many ways. Passing through rural villages that have a working school that we heped build (without stopping to check in) is a special accomplishment. You will notice that we have added several black and white photographs. The photos are an attempt, on my part, to recreate photos from the 1970s in 2018. I came up with this idea after dusting off my father s 35mm he bought in 1976 at Sears and Roebuck. This year s calendar shows several photos from Doabi where we are building one of the largest rural schools in Afghanistan. This school is in memory of Tom Stone who was the 1 st Vermonter killed in action in Afghanistan. It is one of 30 schools that Direct Aid International has built with funds raised in his memory. I hope that it won t be the last. It is only a foundation at the moment but a foundation that could be a template for the future. Our goal is to have it become a model school that other regions of the country will try to replicate over time. Tom was a special man, so this school is close to my heart. This time next year, it is my hope that we will have photos of school children looking out from windows and doors of the school with a roof over their heads. I will be heading back to Afghanistan again in 2019; it will be my 18t h year of building schools and visiting villages that have been overlooked by larger NGOs. It is only because of the continued support of those who receive this calendar that I am able to continue my work. I thank you for your trust and support over the years. Enjoy the photos and imagine the untold sotries that go along with them. Peace, Jonathan Doabi Afghanistan 2018 Tom Stone School
