PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK AND THEIR CAREGIVERS IN OUR PARISH Pray that these parishioners may find comfort and healing in Christ: Javier Arreola, Eva Couto, Elise James, Cheryl Pressley-Smith, Ernie Phillips, Bill Dickson, Audrinna Gardea, Ed Ziller, and Mildred Tucker. Please call the Ministry Center office at 472-2150 to add or remove names from this list. For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45 If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from I want more to thank you, God, for everything you have given me; I have enough to share. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others. Gospel: Mark 10:35-45, (You do not know what you are asking) Adults: How do I feel when I do something good and I am not acknowledged? Why? Children: Am I willing to help others even if nobody thanks me for it? Why? That we may change our attitude of wanting more to being grateful and sharing more generously. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME CHANGE A reminder to turn your clocks back by one hour on Sunday, November 4.

Week 3: Death Penalty What the Church Teaches The dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil. Modern society has the means of protecting itself, without definitively denying criminals the chance to reform. --Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, 1995 In his 2015 address to Congress, Pope Francis called for "the global abolition of the death penalty," as he explained, "I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes.... [A] just and necessary punishment must never exclude the dimension of hope and the goal of rehabilitation." The Catholic Bishops of the United States have echoed this call for many years, including in their 2005 statement A Culture of Life and the Penalty of Death. As Pope Francis said in his 2016 World Youth Day address, "We must ask the Lord to give us the grace to be merciful to those who do us wrong. Jesus on the cross prayed for those who had crucified him: 'Father, forgive them, they know not what they do' (Lk. 23:34). Mercy is the only way to overcome evil. Justice is necessary, very much so, but by itself it is not enough. Justice and mercy must go together." Copyright 2018 Catholic News Service / U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Dear People of God, FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP Election Day is November 6. We will choose our local officials and our representatives to Congress. There are so many issues that affect you and me today. What can we do about them? First, make sure you register to vote. Then VOTE on November 6. Pope Francis encourages us Catholics to participate in politics for the common good. We are called upon to build a civilization of truth and love. We want the dignity of every human being to be respected, especially the poor. We want a world where the air is healthy and everyone has access to clean water. Where the streets are free of violence. Where everyone earns fair wages, and there is free, quality education for your children. Archbishop Oscar Romero said that you must be God s microphone; that each one of you must be a messenger, a prophet. As your Pastoral Leader, I want you to know that your microphone is your VOTE; it is YOUR way to make a difference. Let us be good and faithful citizens: register to vote before the deadline on October 22nd and vote on November 6.
