Outline of United Kingdom One hundred and fourteen years between the periods of the Judges and the Divided Kingdom Recorded in the Old Testament books of 1 & Samuel; 1 Chronicles and parts of 1Kings and Chronicles. Focuses on The Lives of Three Kings Saul (first king) David (a warrior poet; author of many Psalms [famously, Psalm 3]) Solomon (famous for his wisdom [read 1 Kings 3:1-7]; author of most Proverbs; Ecclesiastes & Song of Songs) Each King Reigned Approximately 40 Years Time of Territorial Expansion and National Identity
Psalm 3 1 A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Ark of the Covenant also ark of the Lord, ark of God, ark of the covenant of the Lord (Dt. 10:8) and ark of the testimony The ark was a rectangular box ( ārôn) made of acacia wood, and measured ½ x 1½ x 1½ cubits (i.e. c. ½ x ½ feet). The whole was covered with gold and was carried on poles inserted in rings at the four lower corners. The lid, or mercy-seat, was a gold plate surrounded by two antithetically placed cherubs with outspread wings. The ark served (i) as receptacle for the two tablets of the Decalogue (Ex. :16, 1; 40:0; Dt. 10:1 ) and also for the pot of manna and Aaron s rod (Heb. 9:4 ); (ii) as the meeting-place in the inner sanctuary where the Lord revealed his will to his servants (Moses: Ex. :; 30:36; Aaron: Lv. 16:; Joshua: Jos. 7:6). Thus it served as the symbol of the divine presence guiding his people. The ark was made at Sinai by Bezalel to the pattern given to Moses (Ex. :8ff.). It was used as a depository for the written law (Dt. 31:9; Jos. 4:6) and played a significant part at the crossing of Jordan (Jos. 3 4), the fall of Jericho (Jos. 6) and the ceremony of remembering the covenant at Mt Ebal (Jos. 8:30ff.). Snapshot David & Bathsheba ( Samuel 11)
Snapshot The Wisdom of Solomon THE QUEST: Ecclesiastes 1:1-13 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men!
WISDOM WTT) Psa 3:1 א מ ר נ ב ל ב ל ב ו א ין א לה ים influence, is someone who, within a particular sphere of נ ב ל counts for nothing, has nothing to offer, gives no help, commands no respect, is nothing (HALOT) The OT concept of divine wisdom must not be abstracted from its practical implications for men. The truly wise man is the good man, and the truly good man is he who at the very beginning wisely chooses to give God his proper place in his life (Evangelical Dictionary of Theology 1171 (1984)).
GODLY WISDOM The application of knowledge and experience within the context of God s existence, presence and future intentions which results in godly living.
Method, Scope, and Nature An act of devotion To study & explore To analyze & experiment A desire for understanding A comprehensive examination ( all that is done under heaven ; nothing new) An evil task (ends in frustration)
A Burdensome Task Ecclesiastes 1:14-1 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 1 What is twisted cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted. Talking about things done under the sun Meaningless Like herding the wind There something wrong with is world Twisted (original shape) Lacking (jigsaw puzzle) COMPLEXITY (you don t know what you don t know)
The Result of the Quest Ecclesiastes 1:16-18 16 I thought to myself, "Look, I have grown and increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge." 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. 18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. In other words: If I can t figure it out, who can? My prediction is pain (mental anguish).
