The Gathering of God s People The choir sings a section of the Advent Prose in procession. Please stand ADVENT 2 Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. We have sinned, and are as an unclean thing, and we all do fade as a leaf: And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away; thou hast hid thy face from us: and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities. Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness. The Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all and also with you. The Summary of the Law Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it. You shall love your neighbour as yourself On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22: 37-39 Lord, have mercy on us, and write these your laws in our hearts. The Call to Penitence When the Lord comes, he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore in the light of Christ let us confess our sins.

Kyrie (sung by the choir) Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Collect of the Day Father in heaven, who sent your Son to redeem the world and will send him again to be our judge: Give us grace so to imitate him in the humility and purity of his first coming that when he comes again, we may be ready to greet him with joyful love and firm faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please sit Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Baruch 5: 1-9 5 Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on for ever the beauty of the glory from God. 2 Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting; 3 for God will show your splendour everywhere under heaven. 4 For God will give you evermore the name, Righteous Peace, Godly Glory. 5 Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look towards the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. 6 For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. 7 For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. 8 The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God s command. 9 For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. remain seated while the choir sings:

The Psalm Benedictus Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David; as he spake by the mouth of his holy Prophets which have been since the world began; that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hands of all that hate us, to perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant; to perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: that he would give us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; to give knowledge of salvation unto his people, for the remission of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The Second Reading Philippians 1: 3-11 8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given to him; This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand

The Lighting of the Advent Wreath The Gospel moves down the Nave On each of the four Sundays in this season we will light a candle on the Advent Wreath to remind us of those who prepared the way for the coming of Christ. Today we remember the prophets. The choir sings: Blessed are you, Sovereign Lord, just and true, to you be praise and glory for ever! Of old you spoke by the mouth of your prophets but in our days you speak through your Son whom you have appointed the heir of all things. Grant us, your people, to walk in his light that we may be found ready and watching when he comes again in glory and judgement; for you are our light and our salvation. and the people join in singing the response: The deacon then lights the candle The Gospel Luke 3: 1-6 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Luke Response All turn to face the reader 3In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. This is the gospel of the Lord. Response

The Post-Gospel Hymn As the Gospel procession moves East, all sing a hymn in response to the Gospel. Hills of the north, rejoice, Echoing songs arise, Hail with united voice Him who made earth and skies: He comes in righteousness and love, He brings salvation from above. Isles of the Southern seas, Sing to the listening earth, Carry on every breeze Hope of a world s new birth: In Christ shall all be made anew, His word is sure, his promise true. Lands of the East, arise, He is your brightest morn; Greet him with joyous eyes, Praise shall his path adorn: The God whom you have longed to know, In Christ draws near, and calls you now. Shores of the utmost West, Lands of the setting sun, Welcome the heavenly guest In whom the dawn has come: He brings a never-ending light, Who triumphed o er our darkest night. Shout, as you journey on, Songs be in every mouth, Lo, from the North they come, From East and West and South: In Jesus all shall find their rest, In him the sons of earth be blest. Tune: Little Cornard Editors of the New English Hymnal, based on M.F.E. Shaw (1875 1958) Charles E. Oakley (1832 1865) The Sermon The Affirmation of Faith Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? We believe and trust in him. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. please stand

The Prayers of the People All sit or kneel At the end of each prayer Let us sing to the Lord The following response is sung by all Maranatha, Come Lord, Come At the conclusion of the prayers all say Merciful Father, accept these our prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. The Peace The priest introduces the peace with these words In the tender mercy of our God, the dayspring from on high shall break upon us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. The priest says The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Celebrating at the Lord s Table All stand The Offertory Hymn The gifts of money are collected and brought to the altar. The Lord will come and not be slow, His footsteps cannot err; Before him righteousness shall go, His royal harbinger. Truth from the earth, like to a flower, Shall bud and blossom then; And justice from her heavenly bower, Look down on mortal men.

Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might, This wicked earth redress; For thou art he who shalt by right The nations all possess. The nations all whom thou hast made Shall come and all shall frame To bow them low before thee, Lord, And glorify thy name. For great thou art, and wonders great By thy strong hand are done: Thou in thy everlasting seat Remainest God alone. Tune: St Stephen John Milton (1608 1674) William Jones (1726 1800) cento Psalms 85, 82, 86 The Taking of the Bread and Wine Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us; nourish your people with the word of life, and the bread of heaven. Amen. The priest says Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us Therefore let us celebrate the feast The Lord be with you. and also with you Lift up your hearts. we lift them to the Lord The Great Thanksgiving Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. it is right to give our thanks and praise. Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: And now we give you thanks because you sent Jesus to redeem us from sin and death and to make us inheritors of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great triumph

to judge the world, we may with joy behold his appearing, and in confidence may stand before him. And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: The choir sings Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: he made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. Holy Spirit, giver of life, come upon us now; may this bread and wine be to us the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant All remain standing

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. The choir sings and all repeat each line Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us we are bold to say Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread The priest breaks the consecrated bread for communion and says The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Communion Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. Please sit while the choir sings Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. The Communion Hymn Bread of heaven, on thee we feed, For thy flesh is meat indeed, Ever may our souls be fed, With this true and living bread, Day by day with strength supplied, Through the life of him who died. Vine of heaven, thy blood supplies This blest cup of sacrifice; Tis thy wounds our healing give; To thy cross we look and live: Thou our life! O let us be Rooted, grafted, built on thee. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. All say: May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand
