Peter Hansen's Other Relatives - Overview 2016 by Robert A. Christiansen, updated by RAC 2 Mar 16. As shown on the following chart, my great-grandfather, Peter Hansen, was the third of ten known children of Hans Jensen and Karen Larsdatter, of whom nine are thought to have lived to maturity. All ten children were born in Sløsserup in the southern part of Toreby Sogn in Maribo Amt on the island of Lolland. Hans Jensen (21 Feb 1808-28 Jan 1879 or 28 Jun 1879) & Karen Larsdatter (19 Jul 1810-12 Feb 1874) m. 31 Jul 1833, Sløsserup, Toreby Sogn, Maribo Amt, Denmark Karen Hansen (abt 1833 - bef 1840) Jens Hansen (6 Apr 1834 or 6 Sep 1834 - aft 1890) & Ane Margrethe Boesdatter (10 Jan 1819 - aft 1890) Peter Hansen (2 Dec 1836-6 Jun 1904) & Dorthe Hansen (31 Jan 1850-16 Dec 1923) m. 14 Dec 1877, Radsted Sogn, Maribo Amt, Denmark Ellen Hansen (2 May 1838 - ) & Jens Madsen (abt 1841 - ) Rasmus Hansen (27 May 1841 - ) & Stine unknown m. 1869 Jorgen Hansen (28 May 1843 - ) Karen Hansen (1 Feb 1845-1887) Christen Hansen (14 Mar 1847 - bef Jun 1900) & Christine unknown (Mar 1857 - ) m. abt 1878, Denmark Maren Mary Hansen (3 Jun 1850-1923) & Peter M. Hannibal (17 Jan 1849-26 Feb 1939) m. 12 Nov 1883 Margrethe Hansen (26 Mar 1852-24 Aug 1924) & Hans Petersen (1853-21 May 1925) m. abt 1880 Except for Peter, I believe all of the older children remained in Denmark. The three youngest children, Christen, Maren and Margrethe, immigrated to Nebraska. The following section contains some information on eight of the ten children. I omit the first Karen (died in childhood), Peter, (covered earlier in the Hansen volume); and the last three (covered in later sections). The information I have found on the children who remained in Denmark is extremely fragmentary. The family seems to be missing from the 1860 Toreby Sogn census transcript and the 1870 census hasn't been transcribed, thus complicating my search. Peter Hansen's Other Siblings (children of Hans Jensen and Karen Larsdatter) 2016 by Robert A. Christiansen, updated by RAC 17 Mar 16. g Jens Hansen was living in Øster Ulslev Sogn, about ten miles southwest of Toreby, in the 1880, 1890 and 1901 censuses with his occupation listed as bødtker (barrel maker or cooper). Jens Hansen married Ane Margrethe Boesdatter, a fifty-year old widow, in 1869. Jens evidently brought a son, Lars Peter Hansen, to this marriage. Bizarre as it sounds, Ane Margrethe Boesdatter's first marriage was also to a man named Jens Hansen, who was also a bødtker. The first Jens Hansen was 30 years older than Ane Margrethe, the second was fifteen years younger. Jens Hansen s son, Lars Peter Hansen, emigrated in 1882 and was living in Dannebrog, Nebraska in 1885 and 1886. I have no further information about Lars Peter Hansen. Familysearch.org gives Mads Olsen as the father of Ellen's three oldest children. Ellen s son, Ole Peder Madsen, was living in the Peter Hansen household in Sløsserup in the 1880 census. Christen Hansen, son of Hans Jensen and Karen Larsdatter 2016 by Robert A. Christiansen, updated by RAC 2 Mar 16. g Christen Hansen first came to the United States some time before 1878. He returned to Denmark for a visit and married Christine while he was back in Denmark. I don t know Christine s surname in Denmark. Her given name in Denmark may have been Kirstine. In 1878 Christen brought his bride, Christine, and his single sisters, Maren and Margrethe, to Sioux City, across the border from northeastern Nebraska. Christen, Christine, Maren and Margrethe traveled on the SS Germanic from Liverpool, arriving in New York on April 1, 1878. In the 1880 and 1885 censuses, Christen and Christine were farming in Cuming County, Nebraska. In the 1900 census, Christine was a widow with two children living in Dannebrog, Howard County, Nebraska, with her occupation listed as midwife. The three known children of Christen and Christine Hansen are listed below. The middle child probably died in childhood. Christen Hansen b. 14 Mar 1847, Sløsserup, Toreby Sogn, Maribo Amt, Denmark d. bef Jun 1900, Nebraska & Christine unknown b. Jun 1889, Nebraska < Rose Viola Hansen was born in Jackson Township, Dakota County in northeastern Nebraska, according to her husband's biography. Rose and her husband, Niels Peter "Peter" Hansen, were living in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1910. In the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses he was a shopkeeper in Potter in Cheyenne County, Nebraska east of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Rose's widowed mother was Chapter 6 - Peter Hansen's Other Relatives 7/19/17 page 7

living with them in 1910, 1920 and 1930. Peter and Rose's only two children were born before 1910 and died in infancy. Rose died near Potter in Sidney, Nebraska. < Nora Hansen was a milliner in Cheyenne in 1910. In 1920 she was living with Peter and Rose, and working as a milliner in Potter. I have no further information. Of interest: My great-aunt, Agatha (Mengers) Hansen thought that Christen Hansen committed suicide. So far I haven't been able to confirm this. (There is a Chris Hansen, 1847 16 May 1899 buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Dannebrog.) End of the Christen Hansen section of the Hansen volume of Robert Christiansen's Family History. Peter M. Hannibal and Maren "Mary" Hansen 2016 by Robert A. Christiansen, updated by RAC 2 Mar 16. g Maren Mary Hansen was born in 1850 to Hans Jensen and Karen Larsdatter and emigrated in 1878 on the SS Germanic with her sister, Margrethe, her brother, Christen, and Christen s wife, Christine. In 1883 Maren married Peter M. Hannibal, the son of Lars Hannibal, the founder of the town of Dannebrog in Howard County, Nebraska. Mary lived in Dannebrog for the remainder of her life. Peter M. Hannibal was generally called "P. M. Hannibal". He must have been one of the more interesting individuals to marry into our family. He was a teacher as a young man before becoming deaf. His last term teaching may have been in a remote area of extreme southwestern Oregon. After his father's death, he became Dannebrog postmaster and shopkeeper for a few years, and was Dannebrog's first mayor when the village was incorporated in 1886. Peter was listed as a nurseryman in 1890. Around 1900 Peter Hannibal became a book agent. He also wrote his own books. I've been told that his passion for writing may have exceeded his talent as an author. One can now purchase his books through the Internet. The four children, all sons, of Peter and Mary Hannibal appear in the chart on the following page. The four subsequent pages list the grandchildren. Since Amandus, the oldest son, had no children, I list him here. < Amandus Hannibal was a carpenter in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. His wife Marie was a schoolteacher. Amandus and Marie Hannibal did not have children. Chapter 6 - Peter Hansen's Other Relatives 7/19/17 page 9

Margrethe married Hans Petersen of Dannebrog, Nebraska about 1880. Hans Petersen had established a lumberyard in Dannebrog in 1876. Before World War there was a branch in Potter and later there was a branch at Elba, both in Nebraska. I believe the family still operates the Dannebrog lumberyard, with a branch in Burwell, Nebraska. The six children of Hans and Margrethe Petersen appear on the following chart. Two died in childhood and Tina Louis remained in Dannebrog and never married. The subsequent pages list the three remaining children, along with grandchildren. Chapter 6 - Peter Hansen's Other Relatives 7/19/17 page 16

< Stephanie B. Petersen married a physician, Edwin Sorensen Segard, a Dannebrog native. Subsequently Edwin Segard became a career member of the United States Army medical corps. I have a photograph of the Segard family during a visit to their Hansen relatives in Pottawattamie County, Iowa about 1930. Stephanie and Edwin Segard divorced, and Edwin subsequently remarried. Stephanie later worked as a housemother at several colleges. Both Edwin Segard Sr. and Edwin Segard Jr. were physicians in the United States Army in World War II.
