Fourth Sunday after Pentecost June 17, 2018 Connecting to Community A Powerful Beginning As We Gather: And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). No other claim of Christianity was more controversial in the first century as well as in the twenty-first century. Christians are being told more and more that they need to get with the times, to give absolute truth claims, and concede that salvation, if there even is such a thing, is by whatever means works for you. And yet, the most amazing thing about Christianity is that while it may sound like exclusive superiority, in fact, salvation can only come to those who admit that they are no different than every other human being (the most inclusive claim), namely, that they are completely helpless to help themselves (ultimate inferiority)! For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Rom. 3:23-24). Opening Hymn: Christ, Thou Art the Sure Foundation TLH 466 1. Christ, Thou art the sure Foundation, Thou the Head and Corner-stone; Chosen of the Lord and precious Binding all the Church in one; Thou Thy Zion's Help forever And her Confidence alone. 2. To this temple, where we call Thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today; With Thy wonted loving-kindness Hear Thy servants as they pray And Thy fullest benediction Shed within these walls alway. 3. Here vouchsafe to all Thy servants What they ask of Thee to gain, What they gain from Thee forever With the blessed to retain, And hereafter in Thy glory, Evermore with Thee to reign. 4. Praise and honor to the Father, Praise and honor to the Son, Praise and honor to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in might and one in glory, While unending ages run. 3

Invocation: God Grants Us The Gift Of Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; 18:20) Confession: P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Absolution 4

Hymn of Praise: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee LSB 803 Prayer of the Day: P: Almighty God, You have inaugurated Your kingdom of forgiveness and spiritual power, making us a new creation in Jesus Christ. We pray that Your kingdom will also come through us to others; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 5

God Speaks To Us From His Word First Reading: Acts 4:1-13 (ESV) 1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, By what power or by what name did you do this? 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 6

Hymn of Response: I Love to Tell the Story LBW 390 1. I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story, because I know 'tis true; it satisfies my longings as nothing else can do. Refrain: I love to tell the story, 'twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love. 2. I love to tell the story; 'tis pleasant to repeat what seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet. I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God s own Holy Word. Refrain: 3. I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it, like the rest. And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song, 'twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. Refrain: 7

Holy Gospel: Mark 4:26-34 (ESV) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the fourth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord! 26 And he said, The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come. 30 And he said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ! 8

Hymn of the Day: My Hope is Built on Nothing Less LSB 575 Sermon: Jacob Berlinski - Jacob Berlinski was born and raised in Central Florida. He attended kindergarten through 8th grade at St. Luke s Lutheran School and 9-12th grade at Hagerty High. He met his wife at Hagerty High even though they did not start dating until after college. Jacob attended Seminole State College of Florida for the first two years of undergraduate studies graduating from the Social Science Education program before entering into the History program at the University of Central Florida. He graduated from UCF in 2014 before continuing on to Concordia Seminary St. Louis and served his vicarage at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Edmond, OK. During vicarage, Jacob married his wife, Lauren. Jacob has been called to serve his first call at Rivercliff Lutheran Church in Atlanta, GA and is thrilled to be serving the people of God in that congregation. Jacob and Lauren are anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child in September. 9

Affirmation of Faith: Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. God Receives Our Offerings And Prayers Create in Me 10

Gathering of the Offerings Prayer of the Church give.sllcs.org Lord s Prayer: Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction: God Blesses Us And Sends Us Out P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26) C: Amen. 11
