Defying Gravity Break Free from the Culture of More Sunday, Oct. 30 th we ll begin our churchwide stewardship program called Defying Gravity. Over a four-week period we ll examine the generous life what it is and why it can be hard to experience. We ll be studying the topic of generosity, including data from surveys, insights from experts, and conversations with generous people about their goals and habits. We want to understand why generosity brings people joy and what forces work against it. Many of us want to experience the joy of blessing others but feel trapped by past decisions and misled by a society that bombards us with messages of having more and having better. The good news is that Jesus offers us a way to defy gravity and break free from the culture of more. I encourage you to come hear what the Bible and others say about how to experience a generous life. There will be exercises and challenges during this series to help you consider your relationship with money, possessions, and giving. Commitment Sunday will be Nov. 20 th. Please read the chapters in the book that you have received before you come to worship. You won t want to miss a single Sunday of Defying Gravity. Be sure to Follow the church Facebook page: Hope UMC Pocahontas, Havelock & Plover and also the website: www.hopeumcia.org to see more updates and information about how you can Break Free from the Culture of More. See you in worship, Pastor Jerry

~ Exploring Membership in the United Methodist Church ~ Would you like to explore what being a member of Hope UMC is all about? I invite you to come learn about membership in the United Methodist Church on Sunday, Nov. 13th at 11:00 a.m. after worship in Pocahontas. Our first allegiance is to Christ when we make our Profession of Faith at our Baptism or Confirmation of our Baptism. We confess Jesus Christ as our Savior, put our whole trust in his grace and promise to serve him as our Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races. We promise according to the grace given to us to remain faithful members of Christ s holy church and serve as Christ s representatives in the world. As members of Hope UMC we promise to faithfully participate in its ministries by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. We will be welcoming new members in December. Please talk with me if you have questions about becoming a member of Hope United Methodist Church. I look forward to welcoming you in worship. Blessings, Pastor Jerry pastorhopeumc@evertek.net

Down to Earth The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. - John 1:14 The Message Advent is a season of anticipation. Advent is the expectation that Jesus will come in the present to birth in us God s new work. It s a season of active preparation as we welcome Jesus down to earth. The greatest miracle of all time was Jesus birth: God Almighty willingly choosing to become God in human flesh. The Lord of the universe entered into the struggles of humanity. The God of heaven and earth chose to humble himself as a down to earth God. During this churchwide Advent study, worship themes and time of preparation we will explore the reality of Down to Earth Love, Humility, Lifestyle and Obedience. Jesus, the down-to-earth God, demonstrates in the flesh the love, humility, obedience and sacrificial lifestyle that we as Jesus followers are in turn called to live out and embrace. Christmas is the best reminder that God loves us so much that he willingly emptied himself of all divine rights and privileges, sacrificing everything so that we as God s children might have everything in Christ, the Savior of the world. You will have the opportunity to order a copy of the study book and / or the devotion book as well as choose to be in a small group study during the season of Advent as we prepare our hearts to welcome Jesus the Messiah, God s greatest gift of love to and for the world. See you in worship, Pastor Jerry

Leadership Team Meeting Oct. 13, 2016 Place: Pocahontas Center, 7:00 pm Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Ray Timan, Donnie McLain, Melissa Rahn, Carol Hallman, Moira Hopkins, Elaine Cook, Linda Ferguson, Carol McCurdy, Joan Reinhart and Judy Pursley. Donnie called the meeting to order. For devotions, Pastor Jerry read part of chapter 1 from Defying Gravity, which is part of our Stewardship Campaign materials followed with a prayer. Minutes were read silently and approved. The Charge Conference minutes were read and Elaine made the motion to approve them. Linda seconded and the motion carried. A Treasurer s Report was given by Melissa. She started out by bringing to our attention a correction that she had to make. She had not added in the Sept. offerings from all centers into the 2016YTD totals, thus changing the amount of total funds available. We have $4,139 cash in the budget account at the end of Sept. We are controlling our expenses quite well. Moira asked if the $300.00 in the VBS line item was for this year or next. Melissa said that it was the deposit for 2017. Carol H. made the motion to approve the treasurer s report and Ray seconded. Motion approved. Donnie reported on behalf of the Finance Team. He had us look at the proposed 2017 budget. Moira said that Education has purchased two TVs, but still has to get a DVD player and asked if it should come out of the $300 for AV Equipment. Donnie said that it should come out of Soup and Pie line item. Moira made the motion to increase the VBS line item to $2,500. Elaine seconded and the motion was passed. Donnie told Elaine that Finance encouraged Outreach/ Member Care to do more than the $1,500 they have asked for. He told her that when they used that up to let the Finance Team know and to request additional funding. Donnie said that the Finance Team reviewed the Fuel and Utilities line item and have decreased the budgeted amount of $30,025 by $3,000.00. This gives them a total of $67,163 for next year. The overall budgeted expense for next year is $239,097. The motion was made by Finance and seconded by Carol H that the budget for next year be approved. The motion carried.

Pastor made the nomination of Rosie Herman to the Outreach/Member Care Team class of 2019. Elaine seconded. Motion was approved. Ministry Team Reports: Worship Team: Carol H. said that they will meet on Monday the 17th. She asked if we have any suggestions or ideas. Education Team: Moira reported that we have more kids in Sunday school and in the youth group. The Sunday School Christmas Mission project will involve Haiti. She just isn t sure what yet. Trustees: Carol McCurdy reported that the Trustees and the SPRC did a walk-through of the parsonage. The Pocahontas Center is going to remove the last two rows of pews and carpet the south entryways and south end of the sanctuary. The pews will go down to the Chapel. This will create a gathering space at the south end of the sanctuary. Finance Team: Donnie said that Oct. 30- Nov.20 is the Stewardship Campaign-Defying Gravity UMW: Joan said the Executive Officers met and decided to have only two afternoon general meetings next year, as opposed to the four this year.
