Greetings Everyone, Summer is in full swing now and I hope everyone is taking advantage of the beautiful sunny days. I look forward to all the wonderful adventures that await us this summer. One adventure I plan to participate in is running the 5K at the Lake Trout Festival. However, I find some of the best adventures are the ones that are not planed but happen spontaneously. I would imagine that with the nice weather and the beautiful wilderness of the UP, an adventure waits around every corner, so take full advantage. Speaking of adventures I am sure many people enjoy exploring new areas and experiencing new things and are able to learn new ways to have a wonderful time. Recently I attended a conference where it was stated that if we find ourselves feeling in a rut or bored simply trying something new will help break us out of our static nature. However every adventure involves some risk. For most of us, the thrill of discovery and the thought of newly discovered joys make the journey worth the anxiety. I think that we should take on as many adventures as we can which is probably why I am here as your pastor. There is probably no better example of someone who dared to take on new things and to walk on the edge than St. John the Baptist whose feast day is celebrated on June24th. Of course many of us know that he was the one who was out in the wilderness preaching repentance and baptizing people even in the face of the opposition of authority. His willingness to risk his safety and leave his comfortable life led him to great joy especially when he was approached to baptize Jesus Christ Himself. As we know his ministry did come to a sad end when he was beheaded at King Herod s orders. However, it was the adventurous nature of St. John the Baptist that helped to bring Christ s ministry to the world. As I reflect on a sense of adventure as helpful to the church I wonder what our adventure for United Lutheran could be. I would imagine there are many new things that could be done or new experiences that we as a community could be doing together to help us grow and learn as a congregation. So as we take on our own personal adventures during this summer let us try to think about what adventures we as a congregation could be taking.
