Page Three PARISH NEWS SUNDAY EVENING 5:30 MASS BEGINS TODAY, SEPTEMBER 16 Also, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 19, daily Mass will resume at 6:30 PM. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY THANKS Today, Catechetical Sunday, is a day to thank God for calling us all to be catechists to echo the Good News of abundant life in Christ, now and for eternity. It is the kind of news to shout from the mountaintops! That is why this year s theme from the Bishops is Catechists and Teachers: Agents of the New Evangelization. Our world desperately needs to hear Christ s message of love and hope. We thank God in a special way for catechists who share God s love with our students through the school year and those who prepare our children, youth, and adults for sacraments. At 11:30 Mass our catechists will be commissioned for a new year of service and sent forth with the community s blessing. Please keep them in prayer. SJN DISASTER CREW TRAVELS TO ALABAMA TO BUILD HOUSES COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND SJN parishioners will be building houses in Tuscaloosa, AL with Habitat for Humanity, Nov. 11-17. Tornadoes in April 2011 destroyed much of the town. SJN folks worked on Katrina recovery six times in Mississippi 2005-2011. Second collection taken next weekend Sept. 22/23 will be used for van rental, gas and related expenses. Join us for the 2012 Peru Mission Dinner For almost 50 years, the Diocese of Pittsburgh have sustained a maternity hospital, clinic and orphanage in the Diocese of Chimbote, Peru. CENTERING PRAYER You are welcome to join us anytime for Centering Prayer if you have an hour to spare. All that you need is an intent to be with God. We spend 20 minutes in silence followed by a spiritual reading and time of sharing. If you haven t Centered before, don t let that hold you back. We will be glad to show you how. It is a great way to experience peace and spiritual growth. You don t have to commit to each date, just come when you can. We meet Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM & every other Wednesday evening at 7 PM (Sept. 26.). MASS REQUESTS If you have requested a Mass for a particular Sunday, and would like to carry the Eucharistic gifts to the Altar, please contact an usher before Mass. SACRAMENTAL CONFIRMATION Next Saturday, SEPTEMBER 22 AT 2 PM our Confirmation candidates celebrate the sacrament with Bishop Waltersheid. Please hold them in your prayers this week. Please write a note of encouragement to one of them. Address your note to "Confirmation Candidate" and place it in the box near the spirit book in the narthex- next to the open Bible. We need the entire faith community to support these young people as they take this important step in their faith journey. They have served the poor, come together in prayer and participated in religious education classes - now they need your prayers and encouragement. Will you be there for them? BAPTISM PREP Congratulations to you if you are expecting or have already welcomed a new child into your family! To help you prepare for this wonderful life journey, we invite you to a Baptism prep session on Sept 23 from 10:30 till noon. Call the Rel Ed office to register.

COME AND SEE - RCIA Don t keep the grace and love of Eucharist to yourself. Invite someone to come and see the gifts and treasures of the Catholic Church. This Catholic Church holds many treasures of faith and love. We share them daily through scripture and liturgy and tradition. Let's look around and share them with someone. Extend the invitation to those around you to come and worship in the Catholic Church too. Few come without a personal invitation so please do your part to help our community grow. Come with them on Sunday, Sept 23 at 1 PM (or after the 11:30 Mass) to see what the church offers to them and all of us. There is no obligation to join the church, just an invitation to come and see- inquire and ask the questions! MARRIAGE PREP Lots of plans go into a wedding day. Don't forget the spirit of the marriage covenant. Plan now to join us on Saturday, Sept 29 for a one -day pre-cana workshop that fulfills the requirements for marriage prep in the diocese. LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN What is it? Simply put- an adult or teen receives the Word of God from the celebrant at Mass (the priest) and leads the children from the adult assembly to a special place where they can read and reflect on the Sunday Scriptures. Usually it includes the First Reading and the Gospel, a song, the creed, the intercessions plus a short reflection time. Well written resources for the adult to follow are prepared and waiting. ALL WE NEED IS YOU! Please consider this important ministry for the children at SJN. Are you willing to pray over this call to share the Word? Consider it and let Barb Stokes know if you need more information or want to look at the excellent resources. ADULT EDUCATION Tomorrow, Sept 17 we begin a five week series on the Creed. If you have been thinking about it since August, now is the time to make your decision and COME. Fr. Al and Barb Stokes will facilitate this diocesan course on 5 Monday evenings. Give yourself the gift of time to ponder the mysteries of the CREED that we profess each time we gather. We know that your schedule is filling up fast so pencil it in now and make room for some adult education this fall. We are never too old to learn or to share faith and teach others. Let's do both - learn and teach this Sept. at SJN. To register, call the Rel Ed office or the diocesan website at www.diopitt.org. SOCIAL HOSPITALITY WEEK-END Next weekend is Hospitality Weekend.
