I m not asking about a vacation or a trip, though one could apply. The definition of a journey is an act of traveling from one place to another. A journey isn t only focused on the end goal, the place of arrival. Rather, the importance of a journey is also the middle, the traveling and the process it takes to get from one place to another. So let me ask again: Have you ever been on a journey? Hopefully something comes to mind. Maybe you and/or your family have journeyed through a wonderful experience or event such as a new birth, adoption, wedding, or something that was a process but was meaningful. Possibly, you have gone through something difficult like a death or a tragedy that still represented a journey in your life. We ve all been on them, sometimes easy and sometimes difficult, and as many have heard it said: Life itself is a journey from beginning to end. The season of Lent in the church is a journey, but it s not only our journey, it s a jour-
ney with Jesus and his life. This journey takes us through the good and bad in the life of a man who felt called to share the good news with everyone, that God is working in our world. We know the destination of the journey, which is resurrection. We celebrate it with great hope on Easter, but we also take the time to move through the journey to get to Easter as a church because the journey is as important as the end-point. This is what the season of Lent is all about. If you haven t thought much about your faith journey, Jesus journey to the cross, or journeys in general, you still have time to experience them in Lent! The month of April will begin in Lent and end in Easter, and there s no better way to walk through this journey of faith than to see it all lived out in a church community like St. John. Join us on Sunday mornings, on Maundy Thursday at 7pm for a joint service with First Presbyterian of Arlington Heights (with Holy Communion at St. John), on Good Friday at Noon (with Holy Communion) and at 7pm (with Holy Communion, combined with Christian Church of Arlington Heights and Congregational UCC at St. John, along with a combined choir of all the churches), and of course for Easter Sunday, April 16. By the way, don t forget that the season of Easter runs all the way from Easter Sunday until Pentecost in June, so every Sunday is an Easter celebration! May your Lenten and Easter journeys be blessed and filled with hope, Pastor Michael

Your support is greatly appreciated! There is one box of frozen uncooked pork sausage leftover from the pancake breakfast. We will sell it at a discount as it cannot be returned. See Mary Santi if interested.

Faith In Action (FIAT) NEWS Gary Gephart FIAT continues to work with the Community Renewal Society (CRS) and their three main initiatives for this year: Passage of HB 2373 Sealing Bill to expand current list of offenses for which records can be sealed to remove this additional barrier to employment and housing. Passage of SB 2074 Background Forgiveness Act limits the information that the private consumer reporting agencies can report about an individual s record again to remove barrier from employment and housing. Passage of HB 4476 Sworn Affidavit to eliminate need for a sworn affidavit to report police misconduct which then removes the barrier to being open to a felony and to makes it less difficult to report misconduct. We are trying to set up a meeting with Representative Tom Morrison to discuss support for these bills. Please see Gary Gephart if you are interested in attending this meeting. On a more local level, FIAT is working with other NW suburban churches in support of Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) within Arlington Heights. Currently there is a proposal for a 16- unit building called Heart s Place to be located on Boeger Drive. HUD rules have changed and so now all such building must be disability neutral so Heart s Place will be open to anyone with a disability. This is going to the Village Housing Commission for review on April 12 at 7:30 at Village Hall. We need your support to attend this meeting. The Village currently requires such buildings to have institutional zoning so this will be a requested change at the Housing Commission meeting. The NW Suburban FIAT group is still continuing its efforts to locate another site within Arlington Heights for a larger PSH building.

THE MANNA SCRIP FUNDRAISING PROGRAM The Manna Gift Card Program, sponsored by the Stewardship Committee, is a fundraising effort for St. John UCC as well as many other churches, schools and nonprofits. Gift cards can be used just like cash at hundreds of local and nationwide grocery and retail stores, restaurants, gas stations, theaters, hotels, specialty stores and online vendors such as Groupon, Orbitz and Overstock.com. For every dollar spent, St. John UCC receives between $.015 and $.50, depending on the discount agreed to by the vendor. Purchase only the cards you will use for your regular shopping, dining and entertainment or for special birthday and holiday gifts. The gift cards do not have an expiration date with the exception of Visa cards, which carry a 6 month expiration date, printed on the envelope. You pay no additional fees with your purchase. HOW DO I ORDER? Each time you want to order, use a Manna Gift Card Order Form, available in your Journal or in Fellowship Hall on the kiosk. The list is in alphabetical order by card provider. The dollar denomination of each card appears next to the name. Enter the total dollar amount of each card you want on the corresponding line and the total dollars in the Total line at the top of the page. Write a check to St. John UCC or pay with cash and include your order form. Place in the Manna wall file in the church office or hand in on the 1st Sunday of the month. Always use the most recent order form, included in the Journal or on the kiosk, which has the latest offerings and denominations and also excludes discontinued cards. WHEN ARE ORDERS DUE AND WHEN CAN I PICK THEM UP? Orders are placed on a monthly basis and are due on the first Sunday of each month. Orders are available for pick-up the following Sunday. Need them earlier? Call Connie Wayman (847-392-1499) to make arrangements. If you are not at church to pick up your order, it will be left secured in the church office. WHAT ARE MULTIPLE VENDORS? In several instances, individual stores/restaurants are not listed on the Order Form; only the parent company is listed. A complete list of vendors, with parent company in parenthesis, is available on the Kiosk in Fellowship Hall. When you purchase a card for a parent company, it can be used at any of the establishments it owns. Complete information is also available at www.mannaexpress.net.
