Order of Worship Prelude Jesu, meine Freude ( Jesus, Priceless Treasure ), BWV 610 J. S. Bach Welcome and greetings Joe Donnovin, ruling elder Introit Praise Him Covenant Singers Praise him! Praise him in the heights! Praise him! Praise him all his angels! Praise him all his hosts! Praise him, sun and moon, praise him all you stars of light! Praise him! Fire and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind fulfilling his word. Mountains, and hills, fruit trees and cedars, princes and judges, young men and maidens, old men and children, kings of the earth and all people let them praise the name of the Lord! Let them praise him! Psalm 148 from Psalms for the Soul; music by Andrea Ramsey * Call to worship taken from Psalm 118 Leader: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. All: Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. Leader: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. All: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. * Hymn of praise 235 All Glory, Laud and Honor * Prayer of adoration Sacrament of baptism (11:00) Tema and Patrick Flanagan bringing John Silas Flanagan
Responsive prayer of confession Leader: O Lord, who on this day entered the rebellious city that later rejected you, we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem s, that our faith is often more show than substance, and that our hearts are in need of cleansing. All: Have mercy on us, Son of David, Savior of our lives. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. Amen. The Worship Sourcebook, p. 592 Psalm of confession Be Still Covenant Singers Be still, be still and know that I am God. Be still, be still, be still. Though the waters roar, and though the mountains quake, we will not fear, we will not fear. God is in our midst, the Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Be still, be still and know that I am God, be still, be still, be still. Psalm 46 from Psalms for the Soul; music by Andrea Ramsey Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace taken from 2 Corinthians 5 and Ephesians 2 If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. * Hymn of assurance 648, vv. 1, 2, 3 My Jesus, I Love Thee Worship in the giving of God s tithe and our offerings
Offertory Then Sings My Soul (How Great Thou Art) Covenant Singers O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy pow r throughout the universe displayed. When through the woods and forest glades I wander, and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur, and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze. Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: how great thou art! And when I think that God, his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in, that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin. When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, My God, how great thou art! words and music by Stuart K. Hine, 1899-1989; arr. Philippians 2:1-8 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross!
SERMON NOTES The Supreme Servant and His Sacrifice Philippians 2:1-8 1. The encouragement: those in Christ must pursue unity, humility, and servanthood. (vv. 1-4) 2. The exhortation: have the mind of Christ. (v. 5) 3. The example: Christ freely chose to... relinquish his rights. (v. 6) become a servant. (v. 7) humble himself perfectly unto death. (v. 8)
