Service of Lessons and Carols

OPENING RITE M: O Lord, open my lips, C: and my mouth shall declare your praise. M: Hasten to save me, O God. C: O Lord, come quickly to help me. M: Behold the King comes: C: let us worship him. M Oh, come, let us sing to the Lord, C: let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation. M: Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker, C: for he is our God. M: We are the people of his pasture C: and the sheep of his hand. EXHORTATION AND PRAYER M: Dear people of God, in the season of Advent it is our responsibility and joy to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels, to go to Bethlehem and see the Son of God lying in a manger. Let us hear and heed in Holy Scripture the story of God s loving purpose from the time of our rebellion against him until the glorious redemption brought to us by his holy Child, Jesus, and let us look forward to the yearly remembrance of his birth with hymns and songs of praise. But first, let us pray for the needs of his whole world, for peace and justice on earth, for the unity and mission of the Church for which he died, for the people in our country and in our community, and especially for the brothers and sisters in our synod and in our own congregation. 2

And because he particularly loves them, let us remember, in his name the poor and helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed, the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and unloved, the aged and the little children, as well as all those who do not know and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Finally, let us praise God for the faith of Mary, mother of our Lord, and that whole multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in Jesus, we are one forevermore. To sum up all these petitions, let us pray as Christ himself taught us. C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. M: The almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and may the King of angels bring us all to the fellowship of the citizens above. C: Amen. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 40:1-11 God comforts his people and urges them to prepare for their redemption Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert 3

a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. 6 A voice says, Cry out. And I said, What shall I cry? All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. 9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, Here is your God! 10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Comfort, Comfort All My People CW 11 1 Comfort, comfort all my people; Speak of peace, so says our God. Comfort those who sit in darkness, Groaning from their sorrows load. 4

Speak to all Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell them that their sins I cover, That their warfare now is over. 2 Straighten out the crooked highway; Make the rougher places plain. Let your hearts be true and humble, Ready for his holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o er earth is spread abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That his word is never broken. SECOND LESSON Jeremiah 23:5-6 God will raise up for David a righteous Branch 5 The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior. Behold, a Branch Is Growing CW 47 1 Behold, a Branch is growing Of loveliest form and grace, As prophets sang, foreknowing; It springs from Jesse s race And bears one little flow r In midst of coldest winter, At deepest midnight hour. 2 Isaiah had foretold it In words of promise sure, And Mary s arms enfold it, A virgin meek and pure. Through God s eternal will This child to her is given At midnight calm and still. 3 O Savior, Child of Mary, Who felt our human woes, O Savior, King of glory, Who conquered all our foes, Bring us at last, we pray, To the bright courts of heaven And to the endless day. 5

THIRD LESSON Jeremiah 31:31-34 God promises a new covenant to be written in the hearts of his people 31 The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, declares the Lord. 33 This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, Know the Lord, because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. As Angels Joyed with One Accord CW 5 1 As angels joyed with one accord Upon the advent of our Lord, So laud we all and bless the name Of him who from the Father came. 2 In ev ry age let praise abound He comes; we hear his voice resound. His glorious gospel does not cease To bring us comfort, joy, and peace. 6

FOURTH LESSON Isaiah 7:10-15 The Lord promises that a Son will be conceived and his name will be Emmanuel 10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, 11 Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights. 12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test. 13 Then Isaiah said, Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. 15 He will be eating curds and honey when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right. Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel CW 23 1 Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to you, O Israel! 2 Oh ven, oh ven, Emanuel, Libra al cautivo Israel, Que sufre desterrado aquí Y espera al Hijo de David. Alégrate, oh Israel! Vendrá, ya viene Emanuel. 3 Oh, come, O Key of David, come, And open wide our heav nly home. Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to you, O Israel! FIFTH LESSON Micah 5:2-4 The One who will be Ruler over Israel will be born in Bethlehem 2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, 7

whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. 3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. 4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. O Little Town of Bethlehem CW 66 1 O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep And dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light. The hopes and fears Of all the years Are met in thee tonight. 4 O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin And enter in; Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; Oh, come to us, Abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel! SIXTH LESSON Zechariah 9:9-12 The King comes, gentle and riding on a colt, the foal of a donkey 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, 8

and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. Once in Royal David s City CW50 1 Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2 Not in that poor, lowly stable With the oxen standing by Shall we see him, but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high. Then like stars his children crowned, All in white, his praise will sound. SEVENTH LESSON Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel announces that Jesus will be conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? 9

35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail. 38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her. A Great and Mighty Wonder CW 36 1 A great and mighty wonder, A glorious mystery: A virgin bears an infant Who veils his deity. Repeat the hymn again: To God on high be glory And peace on earth to men. 2 Since all he comes to ransom, By all be he adored, The infant born in Bethl em, The Savior and the Lord. Repeat the hymn again: To God on high be glory And peace on earth to men. 3 All idols then shall perish And Satan s lying cease, And Christ shall raise his scepter, Decreeing endless peace. Repeat the hymn again: To God on high be glory And peace on earth to men. LESSON John 3:16-21 The Greatest Christmas Gift 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear 10

that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. Of the Father s Love Begotten CW 35 1 Of the Father s love begotten Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending he, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see Evermore and evermore. 2 Christ, to you, with God the Father, And the Spirit ceaselessly Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving And unending praises be, Honor, glory, and dominion And eternal victory Evermore and evermore. OFFERING The members of Cristo Rey work together to support the work of the Lord in their community and around the world. Visitors should not feel obligated to participate. CLOSING PRAYER M: O God, you make us glad with the expectation of the coming of your one and only Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Grant that we, who with joy receive him as our Redeemer, may without fear behold him when he will come to be our Judge, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 11

BLESSING M: Go forth into the world in peace, be of good courage, hold fast to that which is good, render to no one evil for evil, strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the afflicted, honor all people, love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. And the blessing of God Almighty the Father, the Son ( ), and the Holy Spirit be upon you and remain with you forever. C: Amen. 12
