JANUARY 29, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL Dear friends in the Lord: Soon our archdiocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection. Our participation supports the charitable work of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collection, you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world. Pope Francis called to us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address, May efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people. We are taking up this collection to be part of the Church s effort to promote a culture of encounter and justice. Your support makes it possible for the Holy Father to carry out his charitable works around the world by assisting those who suffer from war, natural disasters, and other difficult situations. Let us join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world. Please prayerfully consider how you can best support the Peter s Pence Collection this year, as you have done in the past with my gratitude. For more information about the collection, please visit www.usccb.org/ peters-pence. Thank you, and may the Lord bless you abundantly. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York NOTES FROM OUR PASTOR Today begins Catholic Schools Week. There is an open house today at the school from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please stop by for a tour. If you have children in public school and in Religious Ed., consider sending them to our regional school here at St. Columbanus. If you stop in I know you will be impressed, especially with the new principal, Mrs. Bernadette Frohm, who comes to us from upstate NY. She has a great love of children and is deeply spiritual. She cares not only for the students academic training but, more importantly, their spiritual development. She knows her stuff, too, including the latest technology and methods of teaching that the Archdiocese wishes the schools to use. She has been gracious enough to allow the priests of our parish and neighboring parishes to visit the classrooms. She does not answer to any of the priests of our parish except to me since I am co-chairman of the region. We are truly blessed to have her. There was a lot going on in Washington, DC, over the last week. We saw the new president and vice president sworn in. We also saw protesters at the inauguration who destroyed property, and prevented people from attending the inauguration. There was a women s protest composed of those aging, selfabsorbed radicals still living the lie that an unborn child is just property to be discarded. On the other hand, last Friday was the 44 th Annual March for Life with hundreds of thousands of well-behaved and respectful young men and women full of life, hope and joy. What a contrast. As St. Paul wrote to the Ephesians, For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. (Eph 6: 12) We must continue to pray and sacrifice because we are in a battle of good against evil. On a personal note, I will be entering Mt. Sinai Hospital for the last round of treatment on February 1. Thanks to your prayers and God s grace and mercy things are going well. Of course there is no guarantee and my future is totally in God s hands. I truly appreciate everyone s concern and help. I hope you will continue to pray for me and I would ask you to remember all the sick and dying in your daily prayers, too. As always I will keep all of you in my prayers. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo

JANUARY 29, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 5 COLUMBIETTE NEWS BLOOD DRIVE THANK YOU! Thank you to all who donated, or tried to donate, to our blood drive held on January 15, 2017. There were 57 donors who attempted to donate, resulting in 50 pints of lifesaving blood donations. Giving blood is such a generous and unselfish act of kindness. You are truly doing God s work by helping those in need. Again, thank you on behalf of those whose lives you helped save.
