HYMNS OF THE DAY Exalt the Lord our God and worship at His footstool, for He is Holy. Save us, O Son of God, Who was crucified in the flesh, as we sing to You, Alleluia. First Tone Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance, granting our rulers to prevail over adversaries, and protecting Your commonwealth by Your Cross. Sixth Tone O Christ, the angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, the guards were as dead, and Mary stood by the grave, seeking Your sacred body. You destroyed Hades, yet remained untouched by it. You encountered the Virgin and, through her, bestowed Life. Glory to You Who have risen from the dead. Third Tone O Ephemia, beauteous virgin of Christ, you brought great joy to the Orthodox and shame to the heretics, for you confirmed all that the Fathers of the Fourth Council had well decreed. O glorious martyr, beseech Christ God to grant us great mercy. Troparion of Saint Sophia (Holy Wisdom) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. Kondakion - Fourth Tone Lifted upon the Cross by Your free will, Christ God, grant mercies to the new commonwealth that bears Your name. Gladden our faithful rulers by Your power, giving them victory over their adversaries. May Your alliance be for them, a weapon for peace, an invincible standard. 6

Let Us Attend.. EPISTLE READING Verse: O Lord, how magnificent are your works. You have made all things in wisdom. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Wisdom.. Reading is from Saint Paul s Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Let us be Attentive.. BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 8

GOSPEL READING The Reading is from Mark 8:34-38; 9:1 The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power." 9

STEWARDSHIP MINISTRY NEWS Believe and Belong Through Christian Stewardship We hope you celebrated with us our fantastic L.A. Greek Fest, which marked the beginning of our New Ecclesiastical Year. Congratulations to Chairmen Jan and Ted Pastras, their committee, and the hundreds of volunteers who contributed to the success of this most important cultural event of our Cathedral. THANK YOU. The New Ecclesiastical Year is a reminder to begin our participation in the many ministries, which offer spiritual, educational and cultural programs for all ages. In order to be able to faithfully serve our community, the work of our ministries to implement and maintain these programs never stops. We are deeply grateful to our active stewards who sustain and manage this vibrant community of faith through their offerings of time, talent and money to support our operating needs. As the work of our ministries never stops so are our efforts to meet our financial obligations. We prayerfully hope that we can reach our $1,000,000 stewardship goal this year by kindly asking all parishioners to become active stewards. Wishing you an enlightening and fulfilling Ecclesiastical Year, The Stewardship Committee Much is required from the person to whom much is given; much more is required from the person to whom much more is given. As Orthodox students arrive on college campuses, OCF is already in high gear, organizing resources and programs to help our students stay connected to Christ and His Church. TODAY, parishes across North America are celebrating College Student Sunday by recognizing our college students. Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) is a critical ministry. Many of our young people have participated in Orthodox pre-schools, Sunday school, and robust teen activities (youth groups and camps). Upon high school graduation, however, they are put to the test, and forced to face real world challenges without the benefit of family and spiritual support. OCF is on college campuses to make sure our children have a safe and reliable 'home away from home.' Here at Saint Sophia, we all need to extend extra efforts to make sure that local college students see Saint Sophia Cathedral as their home-away-from-home. 16
