JANUARY 2019 ISSUE 1 January 2019 Newsletter Pastor s Page Epiphany On January 6th, we celebrate the visit of the Magi (wise men) to the Christ-child. Epiphany is from a Greek word, meaning to reveal or make manifest. The star led the Magi to the house where Jesus and His family were residing. This has often been identified as the Gentile s Christmas, as the Magi were not Jewish. In this ever-important, but often overlooked event, God is letting the world know that His Son, Jesus, has come for all people. Epiphany is identified as the season of light and it takes place between Christmas and Lent. Epiphany is part of the 12 days of Christmas. The theme of Epiphany is that of mission, and how we are to be bringing the Good News of Jesus to all people. This is a rally call for us believers to bring the message of Jesus, and His redeeming work, to the people who are still sitting in darkness, and are heading for a Christ -less eternity. We progress from the arrival of the Magi, to the baptism of Jesus, and conclude with His Transfiguration. The other weeks of this season draw our attention to Jesus ministry where he preaches and teaches, prays, and heals those afflicted by sin and its consequences. Simply put, this is Jesus mission work, and He sets the example and encouragement for us. As Christ the Light of the World shines in our hearts, it is my prayer that we will not contain that Light, but like a lighthouse, let it shine forth from each of us, and also from our corner of Dutton and Adams to invite people to see what they are missing, and what they need, by introducing them to Jesus.

JANUARY 2019 ISSUE 1 Community Engagement PraiseMoves: 2019 I will put God first ; Fit Spirit, Body, and Soul. This is what happens in our PraiseMoves: The Christian Alternative to yoga class. Come join the fellowship with other classmates and Jesus. We will be starting class up again for the New Year on January 9th at 10:00 a.m. Thanks to all of the members and friends that have supported me in this ministry I have been called to share with others. For you were bought at a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God s. 1 Corinthians 6:20 ~ Blessings on a Joyous and Healthy New Year, Danelle Bieniek CPI CBHC Christmas Tree De-Decorating: Volunteers are needed on Saturday, January 12th at 11:00 a.m. to help pack up the Christmas tree and ornaments, as well as remove the decorations from the Sanctuary, Narthex, and Fellowship Hall, then place them in storage. Pizza and pop will be served to our volunteers. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the Narthex. President s Volunteer Service Award: Crown of Life will host the President s Volunteer Service Award again this year. The event will recognize the volunteer work of many individuals accomplished during 2018 or over their lifetime. The presentation will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019. Crown of Life Lutheran Church and Preschool is a Certifying Organization (CO) for this award. We have begun to collect nominations for the 2018 awards. Information on the award along with a nomination form can be obtained by contacting Bill Claussen via e-mail at wfclausse@aol.com or by calling him at 248-760-4234. Please take this opportunity to help us honor the volunteer works of individuals and families by nominating worthy people you may know. All nominations must be submitted by March 1st. Installation of Officers and Board Members Installation of newly-elected Officers and Board Members will take place on Sunday, January 6th during the 9:00 a.m. worship service. This is for everyone whose name appeared on the December ballot, as well as our advisers, which includes: Mark Werling, President; Dale VanWulfen, Vice President; Don Pell, Recording Secretary; Dick Shore, Treasurer; Gil Bachelard, Board of Spiritual Care; Jim Leinhos, Call Committee; Fred Bane, Education/Youth; Catherine Purcell, Fellowship; Karen Hart, Financial Secretary; Bob Purcell, Outreach; Dale VanWulfen, Stewardship; Jim Leinhos, Technology & Communication; Pia Williams, Music Director; and Joe Bieniek, Properties. Be sure to attend on January 6th to show your support for all of these volunteers. Their time and talents are greatly appreciated and Crown of Life would not function efficiently without their service! Please take a moment to thank these volunteers and also pray that God blesses their journey and allows them to fully glorify Him in their works inside and outside of Crown of Life Lutheran Church and Preschool. From time-to-time, these volunteers will need additional assistance from members and friends of the congregation to accomplish their missions, so prayerfully consider giving a helping hand when needed!

JANUARY 2019 ISSUE 1 Care for Members Danelle Bieniek, 2019 Crown of Life Woman of the Year: Congratulations to Danelle Bieniek for her loving service to our Lord and His church! Everyone is invited to attend the annual luncheon of the Council of Lutheran Women to honor our Woman of the Year. The luncheon is on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. There is a signup sheet in the narthex. The tickets for the event are $29. Cash or check (made payable to Crown of Life ) should be given to Joyce Bane at the time you sign up. We will be meeting at Holy Cross from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a movie night! We will be watching the movie War Room followed by discussion and devotion around the power of prayer. We settled on a meeting date that we hope will work for everyone. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will be going through the book by John Ortberg Everybody is Normal Till You Get to Know Them. Books will be provided for you. I ll have extra books and plenty of seats, so come join us and bring a friend. Crown Jewels January Event and Planning Potluck: Our ladies group with be hosting their annual Bocce Ball event on Monday, January 14h at 11:00 a.m. Following our games, we will have lunch at Palazzo di Bocce. Charlotte Bachelard is sponsoring this event, so see her with questions. The Planning Potluck is Saturday, January 19th at noon. It is never too early to begin collecting ideas for outings. Jot down ideas or bring articles you find to the potluck.

JANUARY 2019 ISSUE 1 Preschool News New Year s Blessings from the preschool! December was a whirlwind of activity as we enjoyed preparing our hearts for the celebration of Christ s birth. The preschoolers enjoyed a gingerbread theme complete with a pretend gingerbread bakery for our bakers. The students made Christmas presents for their parents and were excited to give the present. The preschool and their families participated in a toy drive for Gifts for All God s Children. I am proud of all the donations that came. We made Christmas ornaments, painted with Christmas color finger paints that had glitter in it, and had a lot of fun with Christmas themed literacy and math activities! We enjoyed hearing about Jesus s birth through a variety of children s books. We ended December with a pajama Christmas party. The three year olds watched The Little Drummer Boy: Veggie Tales, and the four year olds watched A Charlie Brown Christmas. We had popcorn and doughnuts as a treat too. As 2019 begins, we are preparing for the 2019-2020 school year. Registration for current parents begins January 15th, and open enrollment begins February 1st. We will have three-year-old class that meets twice a week, a four-year-old class that meets three times a week, and a five-year-old class that meets daily. Spread the news and have them email the preschool office at preschool@crownoflifechurch.org or call the office between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Brochures will be available to share with your family, friends, and neighbors. Miss Catherine Purcell has been our assistant for a month now, and I am so happy to have her as my coworker. She has been a blessing. My Confirmation Verse: John 8:31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Hello! My name is Catherine Purcell, and I am excited to serve as the new Preschool Teacher Assistant. My family and I have been members of Crown of Life since 2005, and I love being able to continue to serve God through Crown. I serve by being in the Crown of Life Choir, volunteer for many events, and by being on the church council as the newly-elected fellowship chair holder. This is Jesus s power working through me to serve the kingdom. I am currently attending Oakland University finishing my bachelors in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. I have a passion for people in trying to understand their needs. I always felt that God gave me a sign that my purpose on Earth was to help people and to contribute my part to the rest of society. I feel I can accomplish my purpose through the field of Psychology. I also have a passion for children and being able to see their abilities to learn and grow in Christ.
