Grapevine Pastor's Desk Advent Greetings, The Advent Season is once again upon us! We are entering into a time of hope, peace and the promise of good things to come. As I write this, I am preparing for a celebration of Thanksgiving with my family, as I am sure many of you. Anticipation fills our hearts as we cook and craft and plan for the coming Christmas season. It is more than the shopping and the balsam fir. We are filled with abundant joy as we greet neighbors, friends, and family in all corners of our lives. Here at the church, we are planning a number of special events for the month of. 4 th, we will include in the service 3 important items of business for the congregation to consider. The Adult Advent Study will be held on Thursdays at 6pm for 4 weeks beginning 1. Bring your Bible, and friends, and we will study the Lord s Prayer through reading and discussion. On 10, there will be a 1-day Youth Advent Study, exploring why we celebrate Advent. All ages are invited for learning, questioning, and crafting. The study will start at 10 am and finish with pizza around 1pm. I invite the adults to come and join in the fun as a time of family sharing. There will be special music performed during the service every Sunday in from our choir, chime choir, and special guests. Christmas Eve, Timothy Noble will share his special gift of music during our Candlelight service at 7pm. We will enjoy fellowship and light refreshments afterward. And we will have Sunday Worship to celebrate the birth of our Lord on Christmas Day. Remember to bring your contributions of boxes of potatoes and boxes of stuffing mix for the food drive. As we journey through this special season, remember and reach out to those who may have needs to be met. Christmas is not joyful for everyone, but each of us can make a difference in the life of someone, providing hope when none seems readily available. You can give a coat or gloves, shoes or food, or a smile or hug. Each and every day we offer our deepest prayers. We pray for comfort, pray with hope, and pray seeking lasting peace. May the comfort of our Lord, Jesus Christ surround you, the love of God abide in you, and the energy of the Holy Spirit lead you today and every day. Page 5 If Only IF ONLY If only t wer a Santa Claus To brighten up our day; A gift for each and every one, Then he d be on his way. Now comes along that bunny With a basket full of treats. He brings a smile to each sad face, With goodies for to eat. If only there were magic wands To heal each hurting soul. No more pain or broken hearts, No plague could take its toll. If only we would take the time To feed a hungry child, I ll bet the grin it would create Would make us just go wild! If only we could start again And live our life anew, I ll bet we d change a thing or two Before our time was through. But there are no re-set buttons, Only you can change the scheme. Take some time with an ailing soul To share your hopes and dreams. Len Arnold November 2016

Page 7 2016 Church Professionals Retreat... Forty-eight church professionals from across the presbytery gathered November 6-8 for the annual church professionals retreat at Deer Creek State Park. The Reverend Loretta Ross, spiritual director, led the group on the theme of Rooted and Grounded in Faith and Community. Through inspiring music and a variety of activities, the participants experienced warm fellowship, deepening spiritual practices, the beauty of nature and practiced tai chi, as they discovered enlightening new ways to connect with God and one another. Thanks to the retreat planners Bob Armstrong and Carol Evans, musician and composer, Tracy Keenan, and spiritual and discernment directors, Sharon Sauer, Katie Kinnison and Debbie Lewicki, who creatively led this refreshing and renewing retreat. Fredericktown First Presbyterian Church... congregational members gathered on the steps Sunday morning to show the community and their neighbors their newly designed t-shirts, proclaiming the words "We Believe". This small membership congregation is happily professing their new focus of sharing the message that Fred Pres believes in God, in love and in hospitality.
