FEBRUARY 19, 2012 SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Isaiah 43:18-19; Psalm 41; 2Cor 1:18-22:1; Mark 2:1-12 FOCUS: The mercy of God brings healing and peace through forgiveness of our sins. God is merciful and desires to pour forth this mercy upon our lives. We need only come to Him through His Son, Jesus. We know that Jesus healed body, mind and soul as He forgave sins. He has empowered and commanded the Church to continue this ministry of healing and forgiveness. We need only say Yes! to His offer! PENITENTIAL DISCIPLINE In Canada, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting & abstinence from meat. Other Fridays are days of abstinence from meat, but Catholics may substitute special acts of charity or piety on this day. The law of abstinence applies to those 14 and older; fasting binds those from 18-59 years of age. Parents are reminded of their duty to introduce their children gradually to the understanding of penance. Your example can be the greatest influence. Fasting, almsgiving, prayer, works of mercy are privileged forms of penance because they are based on teachings from the Gospel and tradition. When we deprive ourselves, we unite ourselves to the suffering of those who are starving and to then save that money to give to the poor. Fasting among Christians is a penitential discipline intended to open our hearts to God and others, a means of purification and liberation, a witness of the depth of our faith.
