SAVED LIKE NOAH - 1 Peter 3:18-22 Intro: A. This passage in 1 Peter 3:18-22 causes all types of problems for those who do not agree that Baptism has something to do with our Salvation. 1. When Peter says we have an antitype - alluding to the Salvation of Noah and baptism - man comes along and says NOT REALLY!!!! Many just simply try to explain Away God s Word as is noted below: a. Bible Knowledge Commentary - Baptism does not save from sin, but from a bad conscience. Baptism is the symbol of what has already occurred in the heart and life of one who has trusted Christ as Savior b. Barnes' / Robertson Word Pictures - & others - The saving by baptism which Peter here mentions is only symbolic (1) The baptism here is Holy Spirit baptism - (Few, but some) (2) Does Baptism save? (Got Questions.com) - the Bible is clear that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works of any kind, including baptism (Ephesians 2:8-9) B. BUT... Peter by INSPIRATION (2 Tim 3:16) says this: 1. 1 Peter 3:18-19 (NKJV) ---- 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, a. 1 Peter 3:20 (NKJV) ---- 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. b. 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, c. 1 Peter 3:22 (NKJV) ---- 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him. C. Understanding what Peter is saying thru Inspiration about ANTITYPE is key to our understanding of what this passage teaches. 1. TYPE & Antitype... a. By TYPE - this is the prefiguring example b. By Antitype - this is the spiritual reality. (1) Aíôßôõðïí, figure, or antitype, is from íôß, over against, and ôýðïò, a blow. Hence, originally, repelling a blow: a blow against a blow; a counterblow. So of an echo or of the reflection of light; then a correspondence, as of a stamp to the die, as here Vincent, M. R. (1887). Word studies in the New Testament. New York: Charles Scribner s Sons. (2) Moses was shown a ôõðïò [tupos] (model) of the heavenly realities and he made an íôéôõðïí [antitupon] on that model, answering to the type (Dods) or model, (Heb 9:24). In 1 Peter 3:21 íôéôõðïò [antitupos] has the converse sense, the reality of baptism which corresponds to or is the antitype of the deluge (Dods). Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament. Nashville, TN: Broadman Press. (a) Hebrews 10:1 (NKJV) ---- 1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things,... (b) Compare this to a Boy and his Pail and the Shadow he casts on the ground. 2. The TYPE = EXODUS 26 a. Hebrews 8:5 (NKJV) ---- 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses Page 1 of 6

was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, "See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain." b. Again The ANTITYPE - Heb 8:2-2 a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man. (cf. Heb 9:23,24) 3. Another example The TYPE = The Passover Lamb a. The ANTITYPE = The Sacrifice of Jesus - cf 1 Cor 5:7 (NKJV) ---- 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. (1) 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 (NKJV) ---- 1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 4. The TYPE - Hebrews 9:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, a. ANTITYPE - Hebrews 9:14 (NKJV) ---- 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? D. As we turn to our text 1 Peter 3:18-22 there are a few observations we want to consider: 1. The Type = Noah s physical deliverance in the Ark through water 2. The Antitype = Our Spiritual salvation in Baptism through Jesus Resurrection a. Cf 1 Peter 3:20-21 (NKJV) ---- 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. b. Cf 1 Pet 3:21 ---- 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, II. OBSERVATIONS - SALVATION REQUIRES AN AGENT, AGENCY and VEHICLE A. Noah s Salvation Required 1. An AGENT = GOD 2. The AGENCY = the Flood of WATER 3. A Vehicle to use the AGENCY = THE ARK B. Our Salvation REQUIRES 1. An Agent = God 2. An Agency = The Resurrection of Jesus Page 2 of 6

3. A Vehicle to use the AGENCY = BAPTISM a. NOTE THE HIGHLIGHTS IN OUR TEXT b. NOTE THE COMPARISON C. NOW NOTE: - With the Vehicle minus the AGENCY = NO Deliverance 1. AGENCY without the Vehicle = Disobedience and Perishing D. BUT - AGENCY plus Vehicle = Salvation and Obedience 1. Cf Agency - Romans 4:24-25; 1 Peter 1:3 a. Romans 4:24-25 (NKJV) ---- 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification. b. 1 Peter 1:3 (NKJV) ---- 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 2. Cf Vehicle - Mark 16:16 ; Acts 2:38 ; 1 Peter 3:21 a. Mark 16:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. b. Acts 2:38 (NKJV) ---- 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. c. 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, III. NOAH WAS PHYSICALLY Delivered A. In 1 Peter 3:20 - Noah was physically delivered from God s Judgment and wrath upon a wicked world through the flood IN the ARK! 1. In Hebrews 11:7 NKJV ---- 7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith. ---- we see by faith this Ark was prepared. a. In like manner 1 Peter 3:21 shows that we are delivered from God s judgment upon a sinful world through the resurrection of Christ in Baptism - which corresponds to Mark 16:16; (1) Acts 2:38-40 (NKJV) ---- 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call. 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. (2) Romans 6:3-5 (NKJV) ---- 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, (3) Colossians 2:12-13 (NKJV) ---- 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, B. NOW NOTE - the Parenthetical Phrase - (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of Page 3 of 6

a good conscience toward God) 1. Negatively - not the removal of the filth of the flesh a. NOT A Ceremonial Cleansing - cf Hebrews 9:9-10 (NKJV) ---- 9 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience 10 concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. b. Cf - Hebrews 9:13-14 (NKJV) ---- 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 2. BUT POSITIVELY - but the answer of a good conscience toward God a. This is An APPEAL TO GOD For A Cleansed Conscience (1) cf Hebrews 10:22 (NKJV) ---- 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. b. Thayer s Definition of this AN APPEAL TO GOD - (1) Thayer Definition: - G1906 epero tema (a) an enquiry, a question (b) a demand (c) earnestly seeking i) craving, an intense desire c. Arndt & Gingrich.- Baptism is an appeal to God for a clear conscience (Greek Lexicon, p. 285). (1) Kittel s Theological Dictionary (Abridged), - the rendition is this: Baptism does not confer physical cleansing but saves as a request for forgiveness... (p. 262). d. Johnson, Barton W. - Inquiry would be still better. The soul seeking the forgiveness of sins "inquires" What shall I do to remove the sense of unforgiven sins and make my conscience void of offense? The answer is "Repent and be baptized," etc. See Acts 2:38. He who obeys the word of the Lord has the "inquiry" answered in baptism. C. Thus - Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved 1. Hebrews 10:22 (NKJV) ---- 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 2. Acts 2:21-38 (NKJV) ---- 21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him: I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence. 29 Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all Page 4 of 6

IV. witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, 35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 3. Rom 10:13-16 (NKJV) ---- 13 For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report? 4. Acts 22:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. In Conclusion: A. Noah s Salvation was thru: 1. Grace - Gen 6:8 2. Faith - Heb 11:7 3. Obedience - Gen 6:22 4. A Vehicle - Heb 11:7 5. The Water of the Flood - 1 Peter 3:20 B. Our Salvation is thru: 1. Grace - Eph 2:8 2. Faith - Acts 16:31 3. Obedience - Heb 5:9; Rom 6:16-18 4. A Vehicle - Heb 5:9; Tit 3:5 5. By Jesus Resurrection - 1 Pet 3:21 C. BAPTISM ALSO NOW SAVES US 1. Saved - Mk 16:16; 1 Pet 3:21 2. Sins Remitted - Acts 2:38 3. Sins Washed Away - Acts 22:16 4. Contact the death of Christ - Rom 6:3 5. United in Christ s Resurrection - Rom 6:4-6 6. Form of Doctrine - Rom 6:16-17 7. In Christ - Gal 3:27 8. Faith in the working of God - Col 2:11-13 9. Born Again - John 3:5 10. Regenerated - Tit 3:5 11. Cleansed Conscience - Heb 10:22; 1 Pet 3:21 D. So the question remains - What is the Condition of One who has not been baptized INTO Jesus Christ? 1. Will you Perish - in Disobedience too? - 1 Peter 3:20 cf - Genesis 7:23 (NKJV) - So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were Page 5 of 6

1 with him in the ark remained alive. 2. Jesus Died To Provide Our Salvation & was raised so we could be saved - Acts 20:28 (NKJV)--- - 28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. a. Will you accept the AGENCY & VEHICLE God has provided for your salvation? - John 14:6; Eph. 3:21; 1 Peter 3:20,21 (1) John 14:6 (NKJV) ---- 6 Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (2) Ephesians 3:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (3) 1 Peter 3:20 (NKJV) ---- 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. (4) 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, b. Judgment is coming - 2 Cor. 5:10; 2 Thess. 1:7-9 (1) 2 Corinthians 5:10 (NKJV) ---- 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (2) 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (NKJV) ---- 7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 1 The New King James Version.
