SAINT BASIL the GREAT PARISH 202 HARCOURT STREET, WINNIPEG, MB R3J 3H3 Parish Office: 204-837-4180 Parish Hall: 204-889-9057 Parish Priest: Rt. Rev Canon Walter Klimchuk Reasons for faith in Jesus From Father Walter Jesus has the power to do more than we can imagine or expect. Little wonder that He was able to walk on water and multiply the bread to feed 5000. These were clear indications that He has power to do all things provided we have faith in Him. We do not have to be afraid because, for every difficulty we meet, Jesus has an answer: You say: It is impossible. God says: All things are possible (Lk 18:27). You say: Am too tired. God says: I will give you rest (Mt 11:28-30). You say: I cannot go on. God says: My grace is sufficient (2Car 12:9). You say: I can't figure things out. God says: I will direct your steps (Prv 3:5-6). You say: I can't do it. God says: You can do all things (Phil 4:13). SUNDAY DIVINE LITURGY 10:00 a.m. (Rosary precedes each Liturgy by one half hour) WEEKDAY SERVICES 8:30 a.m. Rosary followed by Liturgy CONFESSIONS Before Divine Liturgies BAPTISIMS By appointment FUNERALS By arrangement MARRIAGES By appointment at least three months in advance WEBSITE: www.saintbasilwpg.ca PARISH OFFICE EMAIL ADDRESS: parish@saintbasilwpg.ca BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS: bulletin@saintbasilwpg.ca You say: I am not able. God says: I am able (2 Cor 9:8). You say: It is not worth it. God says: It will be worth it (Rom 8:28). You say: I can't forgive myself. God says: I forgive you (Rom 8:1; 1 Jn 1:9). You say: I can't manage. God says: I will supply all your needs (Phil 4:19).

You say: I am afraid. God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear (2 Tm 1:7). You say: I don't have enough faith. God says: I have given every one a measure of faith (Rom 8). You say: I am always worried and frustrated. God says: Cast all your fears on me (1 Pt 5:7). You say: I am not smart enough. God says: I give you wisdom (1 Cor 1:30). You say: I feel all alone. God says: I will not leave you or forsake you (Heb 13:5). You say: Nobody really loves me. God says: I love you (Jn 3:16; 13:34). Don't let yourself be shaped by the world in which you live and its modern culture. Rather, be transformed through the renewal of your mind. You must discern the will of God (see Rom 12:2). FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Part Four At Baptism, we receive seven special gifts from the Holy Spirit (wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety & fear of the Lord). These gifts are freely given to us to help us live as followers of Jesus and to build up the Body of Christ, the Church. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are sealed and strengthened within us at Confirmation. These seven gifts help us to respond to the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, to make good choices, and to serve God and others. When we cooperate with the graces and gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit, we grow as followers of Jesus. We see the effect of the Holy Spirit s presence in our lives in special qualities and attitudes that we develop as we grow in faith. The Church identifies these qualities and attitudes as the fruits of the Holy Spirit. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are signs that the Holy Spirit is alive within us and helping us live the Catholic faith in our daily lives.

GENTLENESS There are different ways that this word is used in the New Testament. Basically, it means to be submissive to God and to be humble enough to be taught by God. Toward others, it means to be considerate. Another common way of translating this word in English is meekness. Aristotle defined meekness as the mean between being too angry and not being angry enough. There is a place and a need for anger. Not all anger is sinful. It is right to be angry over injustice, for example. The meek person has authority over their anger. They are able to summon its energy but control its extremes. Once you really start walking in the Holy Spirit with His divine fruits operating and flowing through you you will really be able to feel and sense when you should handle a certain person or a certain type of situation with more of a touch of gentleness rather than with any kind of stern rebuke or condemnation. People who are free of anger and have peace can be gentle. There is a time for tough love but there are also times that just a gentle and loving touch is all that is really needed to properly handle a certain situation. If all someone ever hears from you are stern words of rebuke and criticism, and it is never properly balanced out with words and actions of love, kindness, and gentleness then after a certain period of time they will start to pull away from you, and they then will have no more desire to want to establish any type of good, solid, loving relationship with you. The Holy Spirit will guide you in all of this. SELF CONTROL The Bible tells us that our spirits and our flesh will war against each other in this life. Our flesh wants immediate self-gratification at all costs and will stop at nothing to try and get it. Our spirits know that some of our fleshly desires are not right for us and as a result, there will be a tug of war between the two and sometimes it will be a major tug of war and the only thing that will be able to control and curb some of the desires of our flesh is the quality of self-control. If you do not have God s self-control operating through you you will have very little victory over such things as bad tempers, judgmental and critical spirits, an unforgiving spirit, and vices such as smoking and the abuse of alcohol. MODESTY We exhibit modesty by being pure in our thoughts, words and dress.

CHASTITY We live the virtue of chastity when we use the gift of sexuality wisely, according to God s plan. As you can see, all of these fruits of the Holy Spirit are very powerful and they not only have the ability to help change, transform, and sanctify you but they also have the ability to touch those around you. Nothing will draw nonbelievers and believers alike to the Lord than someone who is walking and operating in the fruits of the Holy Spirit. If you are willing to allow the Holy Spirit to work and transmit all 9 of these fruits up into your personality to some appreciable degree in this life you will then become a light that will literally radiate the presence of God Himself through your soul and personality. You have no idea how many people you will be able to save, touch, witness to, and help disciple if you have these fruits operating through you. These fruits will give you a credibility with God and with other people that no degree or title can give you in this life. This sanctification process is the ultimate, highest aim and goal with God for our lives. This sanctification process is a two way street. God is more than willing and anxious to do His part but you will have to be willing to do your part. And your part will be to learn what changes God will want to make with you and then start to live, walk, and operate in those specific changes once the Holy Spirit starts this supernatural, sanctification process within you. This part God cannot do for you. Jesus gave Peter the power and ability to be able to walk on water. But there was one thing Peter had to do before that supernatural power was released to him. He had to get out of the boat and start walking straight forward on that power. It was only when he got out of the boat and started walking straight forward did the supernatural power of God manifest allowing him to literally walk on water!

It s the exact same way in this sanctification realm with the Lord. God, through the Holy Spirit, will give you the supernatural power to change, transform, and sanctify you but you will have to be like Peter and be willing to live and walk in that supernatural power before it can really start to work to change and sanctify you. Sanctification is not something that can be forced upon anyone. God really respects everyone s free will and He will never force His will or His ways on anyone. To those of you who will decide to enter into this sanctification process with the Lord realize that all of this will not occur overnight. The Holy Spirit will set the pace and timetable that He will want to work with you on. You can perfectly trust Him to handle each of the areas that He will want to get into. Though some of this may be a bit painful at times, since none of us likes to admit that we have anything that needs to be changed, let the Holy Spirit take you as far as He will want to go with you in this realm and your life and your state of well-being will all be changed for the better much better! Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). When we live by the Spirit whom Jesus has given us, and allow His mighty power to work within us and mold our character, we can overcome any trials and difficulties we may encounter. Do Not Wait Till It Is Too Late! I AM your Jesus, born Incarnate. The heart of the world has become secularized. The secular world opposes the spiritual world in many ways. The secular aspect of existence finds human reasons for every event, discovery or international problem. Grace is never a consideration. GOD S WILL is not a consideration. Human effort is given credit for the achievements only wrought through the grace of OUR UNITED HEARTS. Therefore, the direction grace points to for future events and plans is discounted. This human pride that accounts for everything as accomplished by the hand of man, leaves mankind on the edge of his own destruction without his even recognizing it! Secularism promotes peace between nations that does not include God as a partner in this effort. Secularism, in an attempt to give all people their rights in the world, promotes the legalization of sin. Once again, excluding GOD S LAWS, secularism removed prayer from schools so as not to offend anyone. Then guns were brought in. The secular world in its attempts to accept everyone on the same level, does not allow for the acceptance of the TEN COMMANDMENTS in hearts or in public places. The heart of the world needs to be reconciled with God. Never before has this been more true. But secularism leads away from the Truth and leads to the worship of free will. My telling you these things is not the solution. Your acting on MY ADVICE is. In church or religious circles, this is known as the heresy of modernism or humanism. Medjugorje Newsletter
