Then I went off to Europe for a semester and got to see paintings and portraits and architecture with my own eyes. I ve been in love with art ever since. I spend time in art museums like others spend time at the beach: when I go, I go for the day. I can t tell you exactly how long I studied Michelangelo s David or Fra Angelico s Annunciation or an obscure piece of Egyptian sculpture called The Scribe. I only know these pieces were more stunning in person than I had ever imagined. One piece I wish I d lingered over but hurried past on my way to see David is the unfinished statue to the right. Not only does it give me a glimpse into Michelangelo s creative process (how could anyone carve such a life-like torso out of a massive stone block?), but it also strikes me as an artistic rendering of the Christian life. Even the eldest among us is more like the not-yet-complete Atlas than the highly polished David; as Christian people, we are all unfinished masterpieces. Although there are certainly times when I wish this weren t the case (just chip away the rough stuff, would you, God?), there is another part of me that finds the whole life-long process a thing of beauty. There is something very human and also very holy about never being entirely set in stone, but in continually learning and growing and taking shape. There is something very human and also very holy about sharing in God s creative process. O Gracious One, It is an awesome power you ve shared; and I honor your power not only in pianist, poet and painter, but in those whose encouragement ignites my heart, whose laughter lights up a room, whose touch fills a void, whose integrity inspires my will, whose commitment builds a church, whose compassion builds a community, whose demands stretch my soul, and whose love makes my day; and I honor your power in those artists of kitchen and office and shop, of courtroom and classroom and sickroom; in those crazy people who somehow know the world is always unfinished, and who happily risk pushing and shoving and tugging and pounding and making love to it until it and all of us Pictured is Atlas Slave by Michelangelo in the Accademia in Florence, Italy. come out in more glorious shape. As a new year begins and the final 50 th anniversary event approaches (January 20), discernment for a community ministry project continues, and Lenten small groups are just around the bend, may God continue to shape you and may we continue to shape each other and our surrounding community into a yet more glorious form. A Page In My Journey Ryan Peteraf For years I have wanted to be baptized, but I was never sure what community I wanted to be a part of. I was raised in a primarily Catholic family, and worked in a Catholic Church for the past few years. It seemed natural for me to someday go through RCIA and get baptized in the Catholic Church, but it just never worked out. When I came to Notre Dame, I started to study other denominations in depth. This was when I really started to understand the Lutheran faith. Once I delved into Lutheran theology, I knew it was the right church for me. Then, I asked Hillary Doerries if she could introduce me to the Pastor. I finally met Pastor Caroline, and was baptized soon after. I will never forget the moment I was baptized; it was truly special. I am so happy to be a part of the Lutheran Church, and to finally be baptized in the faith. Don t know how to knit or crochet, but want to learn? They will even give tutorials. If you can t make it on Fridays but would like to contribute to the effort, please feel free to bring completed prayer shawls and hats to the church. Tuesday, January 8 7:00 p.m. SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE This fun & lively committee organizes & coordinates the many monthly mission activities at CtK. This month s focus will be on the activities for 2019. Friday, January 11 10:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. CARD MINISTRY Come join Card Ministry on the second Friday of each month at 10:00 am. They have a wonderful time of fellowship as they create beautiful cards stitched on cardstock made for those in our congregation who are hurting. The cards are punched, stitched and assembled. Maybe the time slot does not work well for you. We have some who do this on their own time. If you would like to do this, please call Freda Scheibelhut at (574) 243-7405. Saturday, January 26 Sunday, January 27 4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. CENTER FOR HOMELESS SERVING OUR COMMUNITY Sign up on the narthex kiosk to serve dinner, cafeteria style, to residents at the Center for the Homeless. CtK members visit the Center on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of each month. This is a great service opportunity for a family to do together. Simply go to the Center for Homeless at 813 South Michigan Street and check in at the front desk. Sunday, January 27 SOCIAL MINISTRY THANK YOU BREAKFAST The Social Ministry Committee is thanking the congregation for all you do, so please come to church hungry on Sunday, January 27. Thanks to your generosity, Social Ministry helped over 30 local and international organizations in 2018. Please join the committee for breakfast in 502/504 between the services to celebrate the gifts CtK was able to provide. Tuesday, January 29 6:00 p.m. 7:15 p.m. DISMAS HOUSE PREPARING DINNER & FELLOWSHIP This mission involves making dinner for residents at Dismas House who are working towards independent living after jail or prison. CtK members sign-up to prepare and take a meal and eat in fellowship with the residents. The meal is self-serve/buffet style & the residents do the clean up. Spotlight On Missions Sunbeam Home for Boys in Jamaica. Social Ministry thanks CtK members for their continued support on January 27. The Social Ministry Committee meets the first Tuesday of the month to decide what missions CtK will support and to creatively come up with ways to reach the goals. Recently, the committee was working on the 2019 budget and reveled in the number of organizations CtK touched in 2018, with a budget of just $1,300. This number, however, doesn t tell the true narrative of how we as a body of Christ are loving and serving the world. That story begins with you and your generosity! Because you share your talents and time, contribute through your charitable giving, provide supplies and offer prayer, CtK can do so much in our community and the world. Thank you for your continued support of our church s mission! Youth Ministry Winter Youth Event - Tubing at St. Patrick s Park All 6th through 12th graders are invited to join us for some fun in the great outdoors! We have the tubing hill at St. Patrick's County Park reserved for our group from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26. Meet here at church at 7:30 p.m. and we will carpool there. Friends are welcome to join us too! Here's what you will need: A $5.00 per person entrance fee, a St. Joseph County Parks Waiver form filled out by a parent, a CtK health/liability form filled out by a parent (if we don't have one on file yet), and warm winter gear. Don't miss out on this awesome night in the snow! Come and join us! Sunday Night Live! for January Sunday School in session. Sunday School News Sunday school resumes for all children and youth on January 6 at 10:30 a.m. Offering: Children ages 2 through 5th grade will continue to collect offering each week for the ELCA Good Gifts "God's Global Barnyard" program. We have already purchased 4 flocks of chicks (10 in each), 2 pigs and 4 goats, and look forward to adding more to help families in need around the world. Youth in 6th-12th grades are collecting offering to support programs for the prevention of teen suicide. This cause was specifically chosen by our youth and we are proud of their efforts to make a difference for teens in need. Middle school Sunday School class: Our Youth Sunday school class will be dividing in two starting January 6, with the high school youth meeting in the Youth Room and the Middle School youth (6th-8th grades) meeting in room 303. Though we've loved being together, we also look forward to some good small group discussions and activities relating to each age group. All youth are still welcome to hang out in the Youth Room before and after class. Our SNL nights for Confirmation and High school youth continue in January, with a timing change for one of our dates. We will be meeting early on January 13 to work on a Service Project together. The Jamaica and Rummage Sale team needs our help sorting clothing in Van Oort hall from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Help with the sort, then stay for our SNL dinner together at 5:00 p.m. No class after dinner on that date. On January 27 our usual SNL schedule resumes from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Page 6
Community Events & Notices Welcome New Members Jonathan Hehn, OSL was welcomed as a new member at CtK December 30 at the 11:15 a.m. service. He moved to our area from Tampa, FL in 2017. He enjoys woodworking and researching liturgy. He is currently a staff member at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart/ND Campus Ministry Make your New Year's Resolution promise to join a group at CtK in 2019! Consider the Christ the King Lunch Bunch, a group that meets the first Tuesday of each month at Copper Creek Buffet. Sign-up in the narthex today! Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser BRRRR, it's frreeezing outside! How about some hot chili to warm you up a bit? You are invited to a special event to help raise funds for The Ripple Effect choir's performance at Carnegie Hall. On January 26, chili enthusiasts in the area will be bringing pots of their special homespun recipes to St. Peter's United Church of Christ to be judged by the public. At the end of the evening, the Top Chili Dog will be awarded a prize! The $10 suggested donation at the door includes limitless chili, cornbread, beverage, dessert, dinner music (provided by The Ripple Effect with special guest Art Gorman!), and the opportunity to participate in a silent auction. All proceeds will go to The Ripple Effect choir general operations, including our Carnegie Hall performance and 4th annual tour in Dec. '19. Diane Huwaldt Perspective Ask God What His Plans Are For Us On November 12, 2018, a dear friend of mine attended a Bible study at her church for the first time. The group was discussing a book they had read. It was especially enjoyable, because everyone was a willing contributor during the discussion. They talked about heaven and the fact that none of us have answers to all our questions. However, each of us has come to know God, and He is all things good. How very blessed we are to have Him in our lives. After leaving the education building on the large grounds, she needed to ask directions to locate the entrance to the church. While she attended this church regularly, she had never entered the door she had been directed to, and there were many doors. Once seated, she moved over to make room for others to sit, so they wouldn t have to step over her to find a seat. A woman came in and sat next to her; they were alone for a short time before the service began. My friend couldn t help but notice that the woman smelled badly. The woman told my friend that she had never been to that church before and that she was homeless. My friend was immediately moved by the woman, and she answered many questions the woman asked. The woman wanted to know how to contact the pastor. She had no phone and no email, but her granddaughter had a phone. So, my friend helped her fill out the notepad in the pew, and she checked the box to have the pastor contact her. My friend always takes notes during the service including Bible verses, hymn titles, words from the pastor, anything she wants to save and reflect upon at a later time. She explained to the woman that she picks one verse to read daily and to think about the words and what they mean. The woman asked if she would copy her notes so she could have something to take away with her after the church service was over. My friend could not have been happier to do that. The woman could not see very well, so my friend held the hymnal for both of them to share, and the woman was able to read it much better. The woman sang beautifully and she knew all the responses the people spoke. I asked my friend why she thought she had that experience. She felt there were two reasons. First, whatever concerns we may have, keep our eyes on God. She attended a Bible study for the first time at that church, where she had the opportunity to learn more about God which is always a blessing. That caused her to be late to church, because she needed to ask directions, and she was directed to a side entrance which she had never used before. And, she ended up sitting in an area she had never sat in before. She said to me, Everything that happened to me that morning was out of my normal routine; it was off balance; it was out of kilter. Secondly, God helps us put things into perspective. And, He puts opportunities to serve Him in our paths. She was able to show the woman how to contact the pastor, copy her notes so the woman had something to take away from the service, and hold the hymnal so the woman could see the words and sing them in her beautiful voice. In my opinion, both women were equally blessed by each other. As I think about our own days when things are not going as we had originally planned, maybe they are off balance, out of kilter, fruit basket upset days. Maybe that is where God can most easily find us to do work for Him and to fulfill opportunities He has---opportunities just waiting to be seized by one of us. Ask Him what His plans are for our days.
