FIRST STEPS FOR THE NEW CHRISTIAN By David Lavery When you become a Christian, it is the start of a brand new life. This booklet is designed to help you understand what it means to be a Christian and shows you the first steps you need to take on the wonderful journey you have just embarked on. You should read and study this booklet with a Bible to hand. The Bible is God's handbook for our lives and in the days ahead will become your invaluable companion. If you have never used a Bible before then you can find the verses referred to in this booklet by looking at the index near the front of your Bible. You can mark things that really stand out to you in your Bible by underlining passages or using a highlighter pen. It's okay if you don't have a Bible, please speak to someone in the church and we will get one for you. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHRISTIAN?" 2 Corinthians 5:17...anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun You are a new person - a new creation You may well be looking at yourself thinking I don't look like a new person. What changed? The first thing to understand is that the real you is not what is on the outside, it is what is on the inside. You are made up of three parts; spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Your body is the part you can see, your soul refers to your mind, your will and your emotions. Your spirit is the real you, that eternal part of you which is on the inside. The Bible tells us that we were spiritually dead, which means that we were disconnected from God, but when we invited Jesus into our lives our spirit was made alive (Ephesians 2:1). You were "born again" (John 3:3) on the inside and Jesus has made you alive on the inside and lives in you by His spirit. I know that this seems hard to understand now, but don't worry, it will become clearer as you learn more in the days that lie ahead. The old has gone Your past has been forgiven When you were born again your slate was wiped clean. God forgave you for all the wrong acts in your past that went against his way of doing things (sins) and dealt with the root cause of those actions, a condition called SIN. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). In other words, our sin resulted in spiritual death and eternal separation from God. However, Jesus took the punishment that was due to you and me when he died on the cross so that we could be right with God. As a result God now looks at you as though you had never sinned. He sees you as righteous and clean, just like a new baby (2 Corinthians 5:21).

You have received eternal life 1 John 5:11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Eternal life does not only mean life without end, but it refers to the quality of that life. The very life of God comes into each person when they come to know Jesus. That probably sounds like a strange concept to you right now. You may have heard people say that they accepted Jesus in their heart or some similar phrase. What they actually mean is that the very Spirit and life of God came into them. So not only is your future assured and you have peace knowing that you will spend eternity with God, but you have God's eternal life in you right now. This is the miracle of salvation. God has a plan for your life Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. One of THE big questions that people ask is Why am I here? The passage we just read shows us that God not only has a plan, but He has a GOOD plan for each one of us. You were born with a destiny to fulfil and God wants to reveal that destiny to you. Our lives are meant to be fulfilling and enjoyable as we walk with God every day. As we go through the course we will see how we can live out God's plan for our lives and enjoy the good life. GROWING UP SPIRITUALLY Colossians 2:6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to live in obedience to him. Let your roots grow down into him and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all he has done. Just as a new born baby needs care and attention, so does a new-born Christian. The hope of every parent is that their little baby will grow up and become a mature and useful member of society. In the same way God wants His children to grow up and become mature as Christians, taking on the characteristics of His son Jesus. You may be thinking that it seems a bit of a tall order to be like Jesus, but don't be discouraged, He doesn't expect it to happen straight away. The process is called discipleship and it involves allowing God to train us and help us change. Maturity simply means being fully developed, or fully grown. The way to reach maturity is to obey God and do the right thing because it is the right thing to do (Ephesians 4:13-15). 2

John 14:21,23,24 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them... All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. A Christian is first and foremost a follower and a disciple of Jesus. When you became a Christian and you asked Jesus to become Lord (boss) of your life, he took you seriously. He has a plan for you to follow that will lead you into greater joy and fulfilment, and this plan is in His word the Bible. He doesn't expect instant perfection from you, but as He begins to highlight things that need to change and line up with His will, it's important that you respond and obey Him. So what comes next? BE BAPTISED IN WATER Acts 2:38 Peter replied, Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." The first thing we are instructed to do when we become a Christian is to BE BAPTISED. The word baptise literally means to dip or immerse and was originally used in connection with dyeing a piece of cloth. It never means sprinkle. The first part of baptism is that of initiation. It is an act of obedience to Him and demonstrates our heart attitude that we are one with him. It is not an optional extra Mark 16:15-16 And then he told them, Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. Anyone who believes and is baptised will be saved. Jesus said that baptism is a key component in our salvation and therefore it is a clear biblical command. Baptism is a like a spiritual funeral, with the old person being buried and the new person being raised to a new life in Jesus. Colossians 2:12 For you were buried with Christ when you were baptised. And with him you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead. It is for believers only Acts 2:41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptised and added to the church. 3

Baptism is a choice that we make after we have made the decision to accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. It is not for unbelievers nor is it for babies. Infant baptism is not found anywhere in the Bible and is therefore of no effect. It should be done without delay Acts 8:36-38 As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, Look! There's some water! Why can't I be baptised? He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptised him. Although some people believe that there should be an indeterminate period of time between turning to Jesus and being baptised, there is no biblical foundation for this. Baptism should be done as soon as possible after becoming a Christian. It is a spiritual act Colossians 2:11 When you came to Christ, you were circumcised, but not by a physical procedure. It was a spiritual procedure the cutting away of your sinful nature. Being baptised is more than simply making an outward declaration that you are going to follow Jesus. A transformation takes place in your spirit, your inner being. Baptism brings you into a new freedom to obey God as it cuts away the power of the old sinful flesh. You now have the power to live a life pleasing to God. We are set free from the power of sin. We are now free to live for God. The power of sin in our lives is broken and we are free to live for God in our new life. BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT Acts 1:4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before." Jesus promised that they would be baptised in the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is God's presence in us and with us. We receive the Holy Spirit in our lives when we become Christians. He gives us that assurance that we are saved. But He also wants to fill us with His power and presence, so that we can live powerful and extraordinary lives. 4 Acts 1:8 But, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

Power for living John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. We can never accomplish the things that God has for our lives without the power of the Holy Spirit in us, because God has not called us to an ordinary life. It was in the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus was able to defeat Satan and perform the extraordinary miracles that he accomplished. The helper (Read John 14:15-17) God sent the Holy Spirit to help us, teach us and strengthen us. The word for helper used in the bible literally means one who stands alongside. We need never be alone again, because God himself has promised His Spirit to us. What about speaking in tongues? (Read Acts 2:4, 10:46, 19:6 and 1 Corinthians 14). The first outward sign of being filled with the Holy Spirit in the Bible was speaking in new tongues. Tongues are simply a new prayer language that God gives to believers. In other places in the Bible they are referred to as praying in the spirit. Tongues give us a new dimension in our prayer life and build us up in our spirits. (Jude 20) READ YOUR BIBLE 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. The Bible is the inspired word of God This is no ordinary book. It is God s word to us and is the standard by which we measure everything in life. It has wisdom, instructions, comfort and direction. It has the promises of God to us and for us. It is as vital to our spiritual health as eating the right food is to our physical wellbeing. We should read and study the Bible every day.. It will help us to change and become more like Jesus (Read James 1:21-25) The Bible needs to be applied to our lives and not just read. It is when we take action and begin to do what the Bible says that amazing changes begin to take place. 5

It will prepare us for everything life has for us The Bible shapes our thoughts, our words and our character. It reveals Gods will to us and shows us how we can walk in that will. It helps us become more like Jesus. PRAY Philippians 4:6 don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Communicate with God He is your father Communication is the key to any strong relationship. Prayer is communication with your heavenly father. You can talk to God about what is going on in your life, you can ask him for help in whatever you are facing or you can just praise and worship Him, thanking Him for all he has done. The most important thing is that you pray. Prayer does not have to use high sounding religious language. Some people don t pray because they think that they might sound childish or silly, but that is just not true. God wants to hear from you no matter how you speak, because He loves you. Find out His will Prayer is where we can hear from God and know His will for our lives. God can speak to us in many ways, through the bible, through other people, but also to our spirit. He can let you know things and guide you from the inside as you spend time with Him and listen to His voice. Let Him know how you are and what you need (Read Philippians 4:4-7). God wants you to enjoy your life and not to be weighed down with worries and cares. He also wants to be your provider and helper. So you can bring your requests to Him without fear. BE JOINED TO A CHURCH Acts 2:41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptised and added to the church that day. Be part of a good church family (Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-14) Christians are not meant to live in isolation, they are supposed to be joined into a church family, where they can grow and develop, and also be a source of strength and encouragement to others. The Bible describes church in a number of ways to help us understand it. One description of church is that it is like a body with lots of different parts. That means that all the parts are important and all the parts have a unique function. A body part cannot function or grow unless it is connected to the rest of the 6

body, in the same way, a Christian cannot properly function and grow without being properly connected to the church. Become a disciple Learn how to live life as a Christian (Read Ephesians 4:11-16). As we said at the beginning of our study, becoming a Christian is only the start of the journey. God's desire is for you to grow up and become a mature Christian and fulfil your life's purpose. That will only happen as we allow our church leaders to help us and instruct us. We can also learn from more mature Christians who are further on than we are and imitate their lifestyle. WHAT'S NEXT? It's important now that you speak to one of the leaders in the church or speak to the person who invited. We can then discuss these steps with you in more detail and help you make progress in your new life. 7
