From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, informed. Repair My Church (RMC) Phase I: It may be that as you read this page, you are already in the newly renovated church. Or it may take another week to complete the work before we can move in. What has been accomplished? 1. New LED lighting was fitted in the sanctuary area (above the altar) and over the choir area. 2. The painting of the interior of church was completed days ago. 3. New hardwood floor has been laid in the sanctuary/altar area which looks really beautiful. 4. The wooden rafters have all been dusted clean. 5. The old vinyl tiles on the floor have been replaced with new ones. These are the tiles over which the pews are placed. 6. The refurbished pews have arrived and have been assembled and installed. As you may be aware, these pews had been shipped down to southern California for the work. 7. Once the pews were in place, the carpet (color: cathedral red) was installed. There is need to pay attention to the minor things such as the other furniture like the ambo, presidential chairs, stations of the cross, etc. Heating and Air Conditioning System in the Church is broken: I would like to inform you that about three months ago, our Church HVAC system broke down, after serving our church well for over twenty years. Some of you may recall that it happened during a spell of hot season when we really needed air conditioning. One bid we have received says that it will cost $12,000 to fix it. Another bid says it will cost us $20,000. Obviously, we are going to go for the lower one, hoping that this time we can have this unit working for another twenty years. To be honest with you, we do not have the money to have it fixed. Please do keep this need in your prayers and your spirit of generosity. Archdiocesan Annual Appeal 2016: We still need to make $12,000 to reach our goal of $64,622. This amount is given to the Archdiocese so that they can support us in all our ministries and services. The Archdiocese has Christ s mission to accomplish at their level. All parishes including ours make up the Archdiocese. So let s support AAA 2016 and give generously so that we can reach the goal as early as possible. Pastoral Council Meeting: On Monday, July 18th, the Pastoral Council meeting met attended by Rich Garbarino, Ron Derenzi, Romy Soriben, Deacon Joe LeBlanc, Rudy Yadao, Karen Guglielmoni, and myself. Kathy Lucchesi, John Wildermuth, David Collins, and Elizabeth Reynoso could not make it. We talked about RMC, AAA, Pre-School, and Stewardship. It was a good opportunity to share experiences and suggest ideas for how we can strengthen our parish community. If you have any suggestions, please pass them on to any of the members. Pre-School: Recently Rich Garbarino, two highly capable women involved in pre-school education, and myself met for a fruitful meeting, talking about the very complex process of getting a pre-school program started in our parish. The committee to get this project underway and have it completed in the next two and a half years or so (by 2018 December) have the following members on it: Rich Garbarino (chair), Ron Derenzi (vice chair), David Collins, Rudy Yadao, Savior Micallef, and myself. Please keep this future project in your prayers. As and when there is progress on this front, I shall keep you Word of God: Prayer: More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of, says Alfred Tennyson. Prayer is a vital part of our Christian life. In the Catholic Church, celebrating the Eucharist is the heart of our prayer life. Finding quiet time for prayer and reflection is so important that it can make a difference between order and chaos, peace and conflict, joy and sadness. The Word of God this Sunday highlights prayer. In Genesis Abraham pleads with God and prays to him driving a bargain. In the gospel of Luke, Jesus gives us the Lord s Prayer and some insights about prayer life. Prayer life is simple. We have to find time. Can we find 15 minutes or 10 minutes or even 5 minutes to sit quietly each day and listen to God and speak to him? Prayer is like any other relationship. It takes time and silence. Think About It: Authenticity: The Master was never impressed by diplomas or degrees. He scrutinized the person, not the certificate. He was once heard to say, When you have ears to hear a bird in song, you don't need to look at its credentials. Hint: Far too many people spend their lives reading the menu instead of enjoying the banquet. (De Mello) Jokes: The little church in the suburbs suddenly stopped buying from its regular office supply dealer. So, the dealer telephoned Deacon Brown to ask why. I ll tell you why, shouted Deacon Brown. Our church ordered some pencils from you to be used in the pews for visitors to register. Well, interrupted the dealer, didn t you receive them yet? Oh, we received them all right, replied Deacon Brown. However, you sent us some golf pencils each stamped with the words, `Play Golf Next Sunday. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Adult and Youth Faith Formation Registration Open The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program is now accepting registrations for the 2016-17 year. Those 16 years of age or older who would like to become Catholic (having never been baptized) or who would like to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (having been baptized into a Christian faith, but not received Communion and/or been confirmed) are invited to call the Pastoral Center offices at 650-588-1455 and leave their contact information. A member of the RCIA team will follow up with details about the program, which begins in September. Registration forms are available in the Pastoral Center. New and continuing registration is now being accepted for the 2016-17 Faith Formation program. Registration forms may be found on the parish website www.stveronicassf.com under the Faith Formation tab, or may be requested by calling the Faith Formation office at 650-588-1455 ext. 305. Even if your child will be coming back to Faith Formation in the fall, a 2016-17 registration form is required. Registration forms are also available in Spanish through the Pastoral Center. Please complete your registration process as soon as possible as class sizes are limited. Classes will begin in September, but the summer is needed to order books and supplies and set up the classes. A reminder that preparation for the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are each two-year programs, beginning no earlier than first grade for Communion and no earlier than 8th grade for Confirmation. The Archdiocese of San Francisco announces the following events in conjunction with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, as announced by Pope Francis. The Jubilee continues through Nov. 20 Feast of Our Lady of Angels of the Porziuncula: The Pardon of Assisi will be available on Friday, August 2, at the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, 610 Vallejo St., SF. Their website, www.shrinesf.org for complete information, or call the Shrine staff at 415-986-4557. To receive the Porziuncula Plenary Indulgence on August 2, one must receive sacramental absolution and receive Holy Communion at Mass during the period beginning 8 days before and ending 8 days after August 2. Additionally, on the feast day itself, one must visit a church and pray at least the Creed and an Our Father for the intentions of the Pope. One must be completely free of any attachment to sin; if this condition is not met, the indulgence is partial rather than plenary. Reflecting on the Word Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time How to you pray? At times I pray as Jesus taught: your kingdom come, give us what we need, forgive us, help us forgive, do not test us. However, in all honesty, my prayer often focuses mostly on me. On other days I have the consciousness of Abraham. I am persistent in asking God to live up to the divine promise of mercy toward others. When my focus is on me, my vision narrows and I tend to give up when I don t get what I want. When my focus is on God and openness to the good that God offers, I often find God present even when the answer is not what I d asked. A spiritual director used to remind me, God always answers our prayers. Sometimes the answer looks different than what we ask and sometimes the answer is no. Jesus says ask, seek, and knock. Then we will receive, find God present in every situation and doors will be opened. He doesn t say that we will receive that we asked, unless we ask for the Holy Spirit. Nor that we will find what we seek, unless we seek to do God s will. Nor that the door on which we knock will be opened unless that door is the heart of Christ. In his 2015 Lenten letter, Pope Francis asked the Church to pray to the Lord. Make our hearts like yours. If that is our prayer, we will find God with us in every life circumstance. We will have Abraham s courage to be persistent before God. We will find God s power alive in us. Buried with Christ in baptism, we were also raised with him. Pray as he taught. Ask, seek, and knock today. For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion Marriage Preparation Guidelines Planning a winter or spring wedding? Archdiocese of San Francisco guidelines require a six-month period of preparation leading up to your big day. The first step is to contact the Parish office to check on available dates and set up an initial meeting with a member of the clergy. How would you describe your prayer life to a close friend? Do you focus on gratifying your own will, finding and living God s will, or some of both? - Living the Word Baptism Information Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at www.stveronicassf.com. Baptisms are generally celebrated monthly on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in English and on various 2nd Saturdays in Spanish. Please call the Parish Office to sign up. Upcoming baptism dates are as follows: August 6 (1 slot left) & 20 (full) September 3 (full) & 17 (full) October 1, 8 (Spanish) & 15 Preparation classes for parents and godparents are held on the second Tuesday of the month. Classes are conducted in the Pastoral Center from 7:30-9:00 p.m. (Adults only please). Please call the Parish Office at 650-588-1455 for specific dates and to reserve your space for the Baptismal Preparation Classes.

REPAIR MY CHURCH St. Veronica Church Building Renovation Project (RMC Project Phase I) Francis heard the invitation of Jesus: Francis, go repair my Church. Yes! said Francis. This is what I long for with all my heart. We have successfully completed Phase I! What happened while we were out of the church: The interior of the Church received a new coat of paint, including accent colors in the sanctuary, Mary and Joseph niches, and vestibule. Beautiful hardwood flooring was installed in the sanctuary, new vinyl tile was installed in the pew areas, and Cathedral Red carpeting was laid in the nave, side chapel, stair area, confessionals, and choir loft. Hardwood baseboards were installed throughout the main floor of the Church. The pews were stripped down to bare wood and a warm oak stain was applied; new kneelers were installed. The rafters were cleaned of many years of dust! Additional cleaning of other items in the Church was completed. And we are already planning Phase II! Phase I has turned out beautifully and we now turn our focus to Phase II, which includes projects like upgraded lighting, a new sound system, refurbishment of the exterior doors, and replacing the protective plexiglass on the stained glass windows. Bids for these projects will be collected and submitted to the RMC Committee for selection. If you haven t yet donated to Repair My Church, please prayerfully consider doing so.
