October 14, 2018 SUNDAY MESSENGER 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HE EMBRACED THEM AND BLESSED THEM Today Jesus stresses how children embody the reign of God. They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God's love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ's love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. OCTOBER - MONTH OF MARY The month of October is dedicated to Mary. During this month we pray rosary before Sunday Masses. Join us! OCTOBER MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT For the 4 Sundays in October, every Catholic parish is required to take a count of the number of people attending each Mass. This is an important source of information when the Archdiocese plans and makes decisions about the future. ST. JEROME OCTOBERFEST Join our friends at St. Jerome on Saturday, October 20, for Octoberfest - a great night out. There will be a plenty of great food and live German music; a cash bar with several different beers and wine in our Big Hall or in Biergarten (parking lot across the school), depending on weather. SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY Next Sunday, October 21, we have a second collection for the World Mission Sunday. Let us help the Church s missionary work around the world in offering practical help and the experience of God s merciful, compassionate presence. NEW CATECHETICAL YEAR Students and teachers are back to school, and our parish opened its doors for another year of faith formation. For those who have participated in our Religious Education Program in the past, we are glad to see you back. For our new families, we look forward to working with you and your children this coming year. It is still not too late to enroll your child/ children and join us. Registration forms are available at the entrance of the church. PICK 3 RAFFLE FOR SANTA LUCIA SCHOOL Pick 3 raffle tickets are now on sale for the month of October. Tickets are $10 each. Prizes are $200 for each Sunday, and $100 on the other days in October. Proceeds benefit Santa Lucia School. ALL SAINTS DAY - ALL SOULS DAY Masses for All Saints Day (holy day of obligation) will be on Thursday, November 1, at and 7 p.m. We will pray rosary at 6:30 p.m. and remember our parishioners that passed away in the last year. Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) is celebrated on Friday, November 2. We will have Mass at on that day. RENEW MY CHURCH - WHY MAKE DISCIPLES? Thirty-six percent of Millennials claim no affiliation with organized religion. Of Millennials who claim to be Catholic, only 17 percent attend Mass on a weekly basis. However, this number doubles when you look at Millennials who attend Mass on a monthly basis. Over the past 20 years, the parishioner base in the Archdiocese of Chicago has declined 25 percent, and further declines are likely as younger generations replace older, more faith-focused generations. In the past, Catholic young people grew up in a society that was very supportive of faith, and they grew into faithful Catholics through attendance in Catholic schools and regular participation in the life of their parishes. Today things are different: faith is not trusted because it can t be reconciled with science; people feel they can be spiritual without being religious; and regular practice of faith is not prioritized by families facing so many time pressures. We can no longer assume children will grow into an active faith life but, rather, we need to identify new ways of bringing youth to a new relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church.

SANTA LUCIA PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Religious Education classes for grades 1 through 8 are held on Sunday mornings from 9:45 until 10:45 a.m. in our school. The purpose of our Religious Education program is faith formation. Faith formation is an ongoing development of the whole person into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. To use the image of St. Paul we put on Christ so that Christ is the center of our lives. All Catholics are on the journey of faith formation. We begin this lifelong journey in the waters of Baptism. The end of this journey is eternal life with Jesus in heaven. Anyone wishing to help is welcome. Please, contact the Parish Office. RENEW MY CHURCH Renew My Church is a multi-year initiative to ensure the sustainable growth of our Church for the future. The objective of Renew My Church is to create vital, vibrant, life-giving, Catholic communities across the Archdiocese of Chicago and inspire disciples to accompany all members of our family of faith to seize this moment to make the mission of Christ our own for our time. SUNDAY ENGLISH MASS SCHEDULE AT SANTA LUCIA AND ST. JEROME Mass schedule at Santa Lucia: Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at English Mass schedule at St. Jerome: Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. If your schedule calls for Mass attendance at an alternate time, feel free to bring your envelope to any of these Masses, and we will ensure your offering gets sent to your home church. RCIA - ADULT PREPARATION FOR SACRAMENTS Are you curious about the Catholic Church? Have you been baptized Catholic but never formed in the faith? Have you never been baptized? Were you baptized in another Christian denomination but interested in the Catholic faith? If you, or someone you know, can answer yes to one of the above questions, RCIA may be what you are looking for. RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a program for adults who were never baptized, baptized and formed in another faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who didn t receive the other sacraments of initiation (Confirmation, Eucharist), and now would like to explore the possibility of fully entering the Catholic Church. For more info, get in touch with Fr. Stipe.
