Spreading A Love for God and His Glory November 5, 2017 "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! Isaiah 6:3

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 100 Leader: Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. All: Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs, Leader: Know that the Lord is God. All: It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; All: give thanks to him and praise his name. Leader: For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; All: his faithfulness continues through all generations. *ARISE MY SOUL ARISE! Arise, my soul, arise, shake off your guilty fears; the bleeding sacrifice, on my behalf appears. Before the throne my surety stands, before the throne my surety stands, my name is written on his hands. Arise, arise, arise. Arise, my soul, arise. Arise, arise, arise. Arise, my soul, arise; shake off your guilty fears and rise. He ever lives above, for me to intercede; his all redeeming love, his precious blood, to plead; his blood atoned for every race, his blood atoned for every race, and sprinkles now the throne of grace. continued above - 2 -

*ARISE MY SOUL ARISE! - continued Five bleeding wounds he bears; received on Calvary; they pour effectual prayers; they strongly plead for me: "Forgive him, O forgive," they cry, "Forgive him, O forgive," they cry, "Don t let that ransomed sinner die!" My God is reconciled; his pardoning voice I hear; he owns me for his child; I can no longer fear. With confidence I now draw nigh, with confidence I now draw nigh, and "Father, Abba, Father!" cry. *ARISE O GOD AND SHINE Arise, O God, and shine in all Thy saving might, And prosper each design to spread Thy glorious light; Let healing streams of mercy flow that all the earth Thy truth may know. Bring distant nations near to sing Thy glorious praise; Let every people hear and learn Thy holy ways. Reign, mighty God, assert Thy cause, and govern by Thy righteous laws. God Calls Us The Lord summons his people to worship and we respond in obedience. The Lord s call is a call to action. We gather, praise, adore, give thanks, etc. The Call to Worship is a joyful summons and a clear reminder that worship is our coming into God s presence by his command, and not our command that he come into our presence. Put forth Thy glorious power, that everyone may see And earth present her store, in converts born to Thee. God, our own God, His Church will bless, And fill the world with righteousness. To God, the only Wise, the one immortal King, Let hallelujahs rise, from every living thing; Let all that breathe, on every coast, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Indicates when to stand. All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680-3 -

*PRAYER OF PRAISE *SCRIPTURE OF PRAISE: Psalm 36:5-7 All: Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep... How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. *GUIDE ME OH THOU GREAT JEHOVAH Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore (2x) Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing waters flow; Let the fiery cloudy pillar; lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, be Thou still my strength and shield. (2x) When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside; Death of deaths, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side. Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee (2x) Land me safe on Canaan s side, bid my anxious fears goodbye (4x) Goodbye - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Psalm 25:8-10, 12-14 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies Who is the man who fears the LORD? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. All: Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! For your name s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great. My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. (Psalm 25) God Cleanses Us The biblical response to God s call to be in his presence is confessing our sins. We humble ourselves when we approach our God. This is a corporate prayer of all God s people. It is a great privilege of the gospel that we can stand forgiven before the Lord of glory. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. - 5 -

*OUR GREAT GOD Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious and unknown Your boundless love unfailing, in grace and mercy shown Bright seraphim in endless flight around your glorious throne They raise their voices day and night in praise to you alone. Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord, we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm Surround us with your angels, hold us in your arms Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm Rise up, oh Lord, and he will flee before our Sovereign God. Let every creature in the sea and every flying bird Let every mountain, every field and valley of the earth Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe Sing praises to the living God, who rules them by his word (Chorus x2) - 6 -

OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Diaconal Offering today: Please use the Special Offering envelopes located in the pew racks. Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) CORNERSTONE My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly trust in Jesus name. (Repeat) Christ alone, Cornerstone; weak made strong in the Savior's love; through the storm he is Lord, Lord of all. Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) When darkness seems to hide his face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil; When he shall come with trumpet sound, Oh may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. (Chorus 2x) - 7 -

Back to Basics: The Heart of Reformed Theology Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. A God-Centered Mind - Isaiah 6:1-10 (ESV) In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!" 4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for." 8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." 9 And he said, "Go, and say to this people: "'Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.' 10 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed." I. The Wonder Sermon Outline - 8 -

II. The Warfare Sermon Outline, continued God Consecrates Us Consecrate means to make holy, to set apart. The Word of God does that for the lives of believers. Through the sermon, confessions of faith, and the offering we are sanctified for service to our Lord to joyfully offer up our lives to him. Sermon Questions 1. Romans 12:1-2 is a call to have our hearts and minds transformed. What are some tangible ways we now think with a Godcenteredness? 2. The prophet Isaiah has a vision of the Lord that is terrifying to him. How does a proper understanding of who God is and who we are transform our lives? 3. In what way does the how of our worship affect the who of our worship? 4. In what way does a God-centeredness affect how you pray and what you pray for? 5. How are we to take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)? - 9 -

God Communes with Us The Lord strengthens and nourishes our faith through a sacramental meal. Through Jesus, communion with God has been reestablished. The covenant has been renewed. The Lord s Supper is the gospel made visible for us and we share in it as the full community of God s people. *WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *O LOVE THAT WILL NOT LET ME GO O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. O Light that follow st all my way, I yield my flick ring torch to thee; my heart restores its borrowed ray, that in thy sunshine s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be. O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be. O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from thee; I lay in dust life s glory dead, and from the ground there blossoms red life that shall endless be. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. God Commissions Us Having been richly blessed by the Lord in our worship, we are sent forth as his ambassadors of reconciliation into the world. Our worship of God as his people now extends into our lives throughout the week. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices to him in all areas of our lives.
