St. Luke s Episcopal Church 253 Glen Avenue Sea Cliff, New York 11579 (516) 676-4222 www.saintlukes-seacliff.org PARISH PROFILE St. Luke s Episcopal parish is an accepting, inclusive, economically diverse and historic Episcopal Church community grounded in Christ s teachings. We practice radical hospitality welcoming all people interested in realizing spiritual wholeness through worship, fellowship, and outreach. Mission Our mission is to grow in faith, individually and as a community. We welcome people of all backgrounds and in all stages of life and reach out to them to share God s abundant grace. Who We Are St. Luke s is a friendly parish of 100 families with strong ties to the community. Attendance at our Sunday services averages around 50 people. Parishioners are encouraged to support the Church with their talents, time and financial resources. We are an affirming congregation of young and old, married and single, women and men with varied sexual orientations. Our small, attractive National Landmark church building enhances the feeling of intimacy and belonging shared by our parish family. Our members are civic-minded and are proud of their Church and community. Our congregation is a community of Christians who meet together to glorify the Lord and, by His grace, work to relate the Scriptures into their daily lives. We promote dialogue, understanding, and friendship in our church family and in our community. Our congregation is made up of people who believe in being open to new ideas and ways of worship. Yet, St. Luke s remains grounded in the Episcopal Church, which emphasizes devotion to Scripture, tradition and reason.

Our Ideal Rector Our ideal rector will work to encourage fellowship within our St. Luke s family by initiating social activities that bring people together around the arts as well as holiday celebrations and meals. People at St. Luke s truly enjoy each other s company and look for opportunities to meet and interact. We also seek a rector with strong interpersonal skills and an engaging manner. We want a rector who will embrace the opportunity to participate in the life of our community of Sea Cliff and represent St. Luke s as both a participant and leader in community initiatives and events. We are looking for a rector who is a liturgical leader, healer, crisis manager, bridge builder and administrative facilitator. Our former rector recently retired after 21 years of service, the past 7 of which he spent at St. Luke s. We look forward to calling a rector who will inspire us, lead us, and guide us with strong preaching and pastoral care attributes. Parish Programs Our rector should be open and affirming to people of all races, ages, sexual orientations and genders....a St. Luke s parishioner The following programs are available for all members to participate in the life of St. Luke s Church: Altar Guild, Ushering, Lay Eucharistic Ministers, Adult Choir, Acolytes, Sunday School, Youth Group, Sunday Morning Nursery Care, Lay Pastoral Care Committee, Thrift Shop, Sunday Coffee Hour, Mother s Day Brunch, Annual Mardi Gras celebration, Fall Bazaar, Adult Education, Monthly Parish Newsletter, Vestry, Worship Committee, and our Christmas Pageant. Our Daughters of the King group will certainly look for and appreciate pastoral guidance as they pursue their mission through prayer, service and evangelism. In addition, St. Luke s plays host to a number of local organizations: AA meetings, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Senior Luncheon Programs, Russian Church Bazaar and the Silly Shakespeare Company. We provide space for a seasonal farmer s market and forums for the community to hear from candidates for local office. Music and the arts are a significant part of our parish life. We expect that our rector will provide enthusiastic leadership for our choir and organist. Proactive rector support for the congregation led arts and music activities would be much appriciated. In addition, St. Luke s sponsors concerts and serves as a performance space for community concerts and other music and theater activities. Our previous rector and his spouse gathered parishioners regularly for pot-luck dinners and classic movie nights. The parishioners at St. Luke s take direct responsibility for supporting our neighbors in need through an active pastoral care program. In addition, we provide direct support to individuals and families in crisis through our Good Samaritan Fund. Our Rector will assume responsibility for management of an agreed upon discretionary fund.

Sunday Services We offer two services providing different ways to express our faith. The 8:00 am service is a time for quiet reflection. The 10:00 am service is a family-oriented celebration with music. We follow Rite II for both services. Members of our youth group and many adults play an active role as acolytes, readers, ushers and lay Eucharistic ministers in all of our regular and holiday services A coffee hour serves as the setting for fellowship after every service at St. Luke s. Our coffee hours are transformed into brunches and lunches to celebrate religious and secular holidays. I attend the 8:00am service, and although our numbers are relatively small, I feel a tremendous spiritual peace during this time....a long-time dedicated St. Luke s parishioner Religious Education We have a strong interest in engaging a rector with a demonstrated commitment to religious education for children, youth and adults. In addition to our childcare program available during the 10:00 am service, we offer an Episcopal Church, lectionary-based Sunday school program for children through to the age of 12. Our rector must have a strong commitment to involving adolescents and young adults in our Sunday services and in the far-reaching life of the church. Many of our adult parishioners have participated in mid-week evening and weekend religious education programs facilitated by our own and guest clergy. Many members of our extended St. Luke s family have expressed interest in spiritual direction. We have had groups small and large travel together locally and even internationally to expand on their collective spiritual experiences. We need a rector who will work to prepare parishioners for service as acolytes, lay readers and Eucharistic ministers. I think that our priest has to be able to grab people s attention by saying something nice to them. They have to get kids involved....a thirteen-year-old St. Luke s parishioner Annual Budget The budget supports all the programs, our beautiful buildings and grounds, and our outreach activities in the local community. We are fortunate to have a comfortable endowment.

Building and Grounds St. Luke s was consecrated in June of 1899. Also in 1899, a small extension was added to the church chancel and a beautiful Midmer pipe organ was purchased and installed. Our pipe organ became well known throughout Long Island as the finest and sweetest-toned instrument of its size outside of Brooklyn. In 1961 a new rectory replaced the old one on the property just west of the church. The house has four bedrooms, 2½ baths, living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, laundry alcove, attached 2-car garage, and a full basement. It also includes a rector s study which has an outside entrance. In the early 1960 s, a large addition was added to the parish hall adding much needed space for the Sunday School in the lower level and a large meeting room on the main floor. In 2000 the slate roof was replaced on the church and the Midmer pipe organ was restored. In 2008 the undercroft of the church was renovated and a beautiful brick patio was added between the parish hall and the rectory. Beautiful trees and shrubs surround the church property. A flower garden was planted in front of the church for all to see and enjoy. A columbarium was installed in our church garden in 2016. Our beautiful stained-glass windows were refurbished in 2017 and a free standing church bell was added in this same year. The restrooms in our parish hall were totally renovated and made handicapped accessible in 2018. St. Luke s facilities and grounds are well maintained and in keeping with the picturesque nature of our community of Sea Cliff. Local Community Since 1883, Sea Cliff has been an incorporated village with inspired planning that includes a sweeping shoreline approach and sensational views overlooking Hempstead Harbor and Long Island Sound. Sea Cliff was originally settled by the Methodist-run Metropolitan Camp Ground Association, which, in 1871, purchased 240 acres of land from the descendents of James Carpenter. From its modest beginnings, and through 125 years of sensitive development, our Village has evolved into a vibrant community recognized for its spirit of imagination, involvement, and preservation. St. Luke s also serves as the spiritual home to a significant number of families from the nearby City of Glen Cove and the hamlets of Glenwood Landing and Glen Head. Young families, retirees, singles, artists, tradesmen, and professionals make their home in our one-square mile village. They count themselves among the members of our Beautification and Landmarks societies, as well as various civic committees, benevolent organizations, and religious congregations to form a noticeably inclusive population. Together, we are the faces one meets in our quaint downtown, which serves as the hub of walkable byways, public stairs, and narrow streets that run along our namesake Cliff and that still trace the plan of the original settlers tenting-grounds.

Few communities of comparable size can boast as many fine examples of Victorian architecture. Its compact size, picturesque landscape, and historic architecture contribute to the Village s charm and cohesive community spirit. Village amenities include numerous handsome parks, some of which double as athletic fields and playgrounds, and all of which are well maintained and freely enjoyed. There is also a fine beach to which all may retreat for solace or assemble for fun, as well as a newly restored waterfront boardwalk. The Village maintains two separate library facilities, one for adults, and another for children. Sea Cliff has its own elected government, housed in the Village Hall, adjacent to which is the charming Sea Cliff Museum and an attractive village green. Many St. Luke s parishioners present and past have been actively involved in our local fire departments and emergency medical teams. Our previous priests have all been ardent supporters of our first responders. We would love our priest to serve as Chaplain to our fire department. The local school district (North Shore) is highly ranked and is a great attraction for new residents in search of competitive public schools for their children. There are several fine private schools, colleges, and universities in the surrounding area. While Sea Cliff has a desirable small-town feel, it is well served by a commuter train and bus-to-subway link with New York City. Three major airports are close by for national and international travel. Everyone at St. Luke s hopes and prays for a priest who will serve as a nurturing pastoral leader for our church family and our surrounding communities. It is essential to bring young families in for the future of our congregation. We need activities for all age groups and everyone needs to be involved in our services.
