Sacramental Preparation Baptism: is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM at Most Holy Rosary Church, and at 9:00 AM on the third Sunday of the month at Holy Spirit. The preparation process should begin at least three months before the planned date of the Baptism. A Baptism Preparation Class is required for parents (godparents may attend if they wish). This class is offered on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM at Holy Spirit Church. Please call the parish office to register. The date of the baptism is scheduled after attending the class. Parish membership and active worship is required for two months prior to preparation. Haven t Received Your Sacrament on Schedule? Families of children in grades three and up who have been baptized but have not yet received any formal religious education, as well as those who have not been baptized, should contact the Parish Office for information on how to proceed. Initiation of Adults and Older Children: This is an extended formation process for unbaptized or uncatechized adults or baptized Christians of other faith traditions who wish to become members of the Catholic Church, as well as for unbaptized or uncatechized school-aged children. Please contact the parish office for more information. Initiation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil after a formation period of one or two years. Adult Confirmation: This is a program for persons over the age of 18 who have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist, but who never completed their initiation with the Sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a 10-12 week program, with Confirmation being celebrated on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Please call the parish office for more details. Matrimony: Couples wishing to marry in Good Shepherd parish are required to make initial arrangements at least one year in advance. Four sessions with the priest or deacon, as well as Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter take place during this year. Parish registration and active worship for at least two months are required before a date may be scheduled. Anointing of the Sick: Anyone who is seriously ill or unable to come to church for a length of time should contact the parish office to arrange for the Anointing of the Sick. Eucharistic Ministers bring Holy Communion to homebound parishioners every Sunday, and one of the priests will visit on the First Friday of each month. Regular Sunday worship with us indicates a practicing Catholic, not just parish registration. An assurance of family practice and raising children in the faith they seek is necessary for the sacraments of initiation and certification of sponsorship. A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR: It is good that we are here. Saint Peter s words speak so much to us as we enter this second week of our Lenten journey. It was an early belief in the Church that the Transfiguration of Jesus took place forty days before the Crucifixion hence the placement of today s Gospel passage. Lent is a time for us to allow the transfiguring light of Christ to shine into our lives: to affirm what is good, to bring to light those areas where darkness still prevails. How are you allowing Christ to transfigure you with His presence this Lent? Adult Faith Enrichment: Our Lenten Faith Enrichment continues tomorrow, Monday, March 2 nd with two identical sessions, at 1:30 PM or at 7:00 PM. Using the Symbolon series hosted by Dr. Edward Sri, tomorrow s topic is Who Is Jesus Just a Good Man or Lord of Our Lives? The video presentation runs about a half-hour, followed (as always) by some lively discussion! Please join us all are welcome to attend! Both sessions are in Msgr. Gambino Hall. Upcoming Events: The annual Chicken and Fish Fry by Thistle Restaurant, sponsored by our Altar-Rosary Society will be held next Sunday afternoon, March 8 th. Tickets are available from any Rosarians and will be available at the door as well. Thistle is well known for their food, so join us and save yourself the time and effort of cooking Sunday dinner next weekend! The annual Communion Breakfast of the Holy Name Society will take place on Sunday, March 22 nd. Please note that 8:00 AM Mass that day will be at Most Holy Rosary, the breakfast. 10:00 Mass will be offered at Holy Spirit that day only. Tickets for this event are available from any Holy Name member. Saints Alive! On Tuesday, March 3 rd, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Katherine Drexel. A wealthy society belle of nineteenth century Philadelphia, she gave away her multimillion dollar inheritance to assist African-American and Native American missions around the United States, and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to serve their needs, especially in the field of education (Xavier University in New Orleans is one of the outstanding schools founded by St. Katherine). Last weekend, we had the annual Development of Peoples collection, which continues St. Katherine s work. Tuesday will mark the 60 th anniversary of her death in 1955 at the age of 97 she was canonized as a saint by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000, and one of her distant cousins (who serves as a guide at the Shrine of St. Katherine in Northeast Philadelphia) is a former parishioner of mine. St. Katherine serves as a great example of loving concern to the least of our brothers and sisters. May her example challenge us to give that same loving care to those in need, not just during Lent, but year-round!! Rest in Peace: Talk about the Rule of Threes! Once again this past week, three other dedicated servants of God who were a part of our parish passed on to their eternal reward. On Sunday, February 15 th, Sister Norma Garbaccio, MPF, who taught at Holy Rosary School and who served as Superior of the convent here, passed away at St. Joseph s Hall at Villa Walsh in Morristown at the age of 92. We also learned that Father Sebastian Muccilli, who grew up in Most Holy Rosary Parish, and who was a retired priest of the Diocese of Metuchen, passed away on February 16th at his home in Florida at the age of 84. Father Muccilli served for many years as Chaplain at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, and was known as a bit of a maverick in our presbyterate. Finally, on Saturday, February 21 st, Sister Madonna Vona, RSM, passed away at McAuley Hall in Watchung at the age of 93, just a few days after her good friend, Sister Immaculate. I knew Sister Madonna as her older brother and sister-in-law were Communion calls of mine when I was at Our Lady of Victories; her younger brother, Fr. Michael Vona (a retired priest of the Trenton Diocese), often goes on the same retreat that I go on every year; and her nephew is Fr. Dave Kosmoski, the pastor of St. Andrew s in Avenel. Again, I made memorial donations to the Religious Teachers Filippini and the Sisters of Mercy in memory of Sister Norma and Sister Madonna. The Saturday, March 21 st Mass will be in memory of the three religious Sisters. May Christ the High Priest reward Father Seb for his devoted service to the people of God, and may Christ the Teacher now reward Sister Norma and Sister Madonna for their faithful service to all our children, and to all those they served over the years! Mass attendance on February 21-22 was 510. Despite the snow last Saturday, our attendance that night was just about average, and once again on Sunday, attendance picked up as the day progressed. Don t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour next Saturday night! What have you done differently this first week of Lent? Make the most of this season of grace! Fr. Mike For the month of March pray for those who need the support of this community of faith: Mary Murray, Anna Gironda, Andrea Costantino, Greg Rohrbacher, Nellie Padilla, Filbert Maez, Sueann Tarantino, Irene Caso, Janet Anne Dwyer, Shirley Barbieri, David Utter, Catherine Suhay, Carmen Collura, Baby Seraphina, Chuck F., Lillian Estok, Valerie Breyta, Tom Bromirski, Lynn Munoz, Carol Magyar, JoAnn Magyar, Dorothy Maez, Rose Morley, Maryann Petrick, Mike & Kate Adda, Chris Hankerson, William Narvaez, Christopher Paone, Judy Smegelski, William Sienko, Baby Christopher Hernandez, Dan Alvarez, Telofski Family, Elsie Vega, Arnold Jasper, Connie & Vince Montuoro, Drew Horvat, Chris Johnson, Nicole Honkisz, Esidore Maey, Nancy Weber, John Zur, Mary Martini, Robert Durso, Barbara White, Ria Orsini, Baby Zachary, Christian Nunez, Carolyn Tarantino, Gene Jacob, Danny Parker, Bill Karvalis, Sr. Hortensia Diaz, Joey Nemeth, Baby Jael Maldonado, Jerry Disilverstro, Dee Ziemba, Robert (Bob) Pincelli, Nicholas Folfa, Diane Petro Duncan, Tom Kenjon, Heather Gondek, John Kobran, Rosemary Kelesi, Stephen Pry, Carol George, Paul Halek, Nancy Milochik, Rose Celecki, Braden Cruz, Baby M, Ashelyn Polonia, Carmen Titolo, Patricia Kupst, Joann Zamelio, Megan Ortega, Rigoberto Diffoet, Dan & Kathy Balinski. SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT This weekend at the 10:00 AM Mass we celebrate the PENITENTIAL RITE for our Candidates (already baptized): Katherine Duarte, Tobias Duarte, Alex Rodriguez and Diego Rodriguez who are preparing for the reception of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. The moving and powerful prayers of this Rite evoke the baptismal graces which these candidates have already received and ask for God s help for their spiritual growth and for their spiritual healing. Next Saturday, March 7, at the 4:30 PM Mass, our elect, Krystne Anderson, Christopher Valdez & Gianna Valdez will celebrate the FIRST SCRUTINY. The scrutinies are among the most ancient prayers in the Christian liturgical tradition. As early as the second century, Christian communities would help those who had been chosen for Baptism to prepare for their initiation by laying on hands and by prayers for protection and deliverance from evil. At that Mass, we will use the Lectionary s scrutiny readings from Cycle A. All are invited.
