Mustard Seed Children s Lesson Summary for August 23, 2009 Released on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 Obeying God s Commands Lesson Text: Deuteronomy 6:1-9, 20-24 Background Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:1-25 Devotional Reading: Proverbs 2:1-11 Deuteronomy 6:1 9, 20 24 1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: 2 That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.............. 20 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? 21 Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh s bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: 22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes: 23 And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers. 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. THE OBJECT IN VIEW: Teach the children that God wants our love. Obedience is easier when we love God strongly.

TRUTHS TO STRESS: 1. It is important for God's people to obey Him. 2. God wants us to obey Him because we love Him. 3. Obeying God's rules is always good for us. PLANNING LESSON AIDS: For Helping to Remember, bring red construction paper, a pencil, and safety scissors (blunt tip) for each student. For the lesson activity, make a copy of the word search for each student; this will help with reviewing key words from the lesson. TEACHER S NOTES: Time: about 1406 B.C. Place: Plains of Moab, probably at Shittim The teachings of this lesson were given as God's people were gathered on the outskirts of the Promised Land. To prepare them to enter, God had them review once more His ways and the history of all He had done for them. Their well-being in the Promised Land depended on remembering and observing the rules God had given them. Their continued well-being depended on teaching God's ways to their children so that they would also know and be inclined to follow Him. God reminded them that rote, perfunctory obedience was not enough. God wanted obedience that sprang from a heart overflowing with love for Him. God reminded them to be diligent in teaching their children. They were to be constantly teaching their children in the daily activities of life when they were lying down and when they were rising up that is, all the time. They were also to be alert to special teachable moments that might occur as their children asked questions about their celebrations of God's working in their lives. BEGINNING THE LESSON: Anna liked to ask the question "Why?" She always wanted to know why she should do something. Why should she clear the table? Why should she take a bath? Why should she go to school? The question "Why?" is important to God too. In this lesson, we will learn why God wants us to obey Him. TELLING THE LESSON: At last God's people were just outside the Promised Land. They were ready to go into the land God had promised to give them. It was an exciting time. Before they went in, God reminded them once again of His rules. It was important that they keep His rules and that their children and grandchildren keep them too. Then God could keep blessing their families. This was important, for if they were careful to follow God's rules, it would go well with them in their new land. They would live long lives and be blessed with many children. Why should they obey God? They were to remember that there is only one true God. They were to obey because they loved Him with their whole hearts. They were always to be teaching God's rules to their children. They were to teach them in the things they did every day. When they were sitting in the house with their children, they were to teach them. When they were walking, when they were lying

down at every possible moment, they were to be teaching them to always love and obey God. Parents were also to teach their children when they asked questions. When someone asks a question, he is paying special attention because he really wants to know the answer. It is the best time for teaching. Moses told the people of Israel that they should give themselves reminders of God's Word write it down and put it on the wall. God's Word is very important, so we need reminders. They were to always remember and tell their children about the great things God had done for them. God's rules are always for our good. They always bring us a happier life. The Lord is not a selfish, mean God who wants to hurt us. Our God is good and kind, and He loves us very much. It is easy to love God, since His rules are always for our good. It is easy to love God, for He has done so much for us. TELLING HOW TO LIVE: Do you love God? Have you received Jesus as your Saviour? If you have not yet received Jesus but you are ready to do so, whisper in my ear during our handwork time. Just say, "I am ready to trust in Jesus as Saviour." I will be glad to pray with you. If you have received Jesus, how much do you love Him? How often do you tell God, "I love You, Lord"? God loves to hear us say, "I love You, Lord." He loves it when we show our love by doing what He says. You can show your love for God by spending time in His Word and following what it says. Read a small portion in your Bible every day. Start doing that now while you are young; you will not regret it! HELPING TO REMEMBER: Let the children draw and cut out a heart to remind them that God wants us to obey and that we want to obey because we love Him so much. EXPLAINING THE MEMORY VERSE: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might" (Deuteronomy 6:5). These are words Moses spoke to the people when they were ready to go into the Promised Land. He was reminding them of what God had already told them. He told them to love the Lord their God with all their heart and soul. They were to love God with everything that was in them. They were to love Him with all their might, or strength. This means that He was to be the most important thing in their lives. God wants us not just to like Him but to love Him. He wants us not just to love Him a little but to love Him a lot-to love Him more than we love anything or anyone else. When we do love God with our whole heart, it is easy to obey whatever He tells us to do. CONCLUSION: The Israelites were reminded of how God had preserved them in their exodus from Egyptian bondage. He had brought ten horrible plagues on that land to force Pharaoh to let them go. He had destroyed the enemy army in Red Sea waters after bringing His people through on dry land. He had brought them to the entrance to Canaan, a land given to them.

Every Israelite father was made responsible for guiding his children into divine truths such as the Ten Commandments. When emerging generations asked why they were required to keep the divine commandments in the law, they were to be told that divine preservation demanded it. God is to be loved and listened to. Even today, it is incumbent on each current generation to pass on its values to the upcoming generation so that its descendants can profit from them. Believers today should do no less than what God requires of them because of the ways He has blessed them. One cannot stress too much the importance of God and His Word. God is to be loved and listened to. PRAYER: Dear God in Heaven, we love You for who You are and all that You have done. Thank You for Your Word that You have given to us. Help us to both hear and do what You have commanded us, in Jesus name. Amen. ANTICIPATING THE NEXT LESSON: Next week s lesson is Choose Life! and tells how Moses urged Israel to choose obedience, blessing and life rather than disobedience and death. Study Deut. 30:1-20.
