Joseph the Betrothed, and James the Brother of the Lord The Holy Prophet-King David, Saint Joseph the Betrothed, and Saint James the Brother of the Lord are commemorated on the Sunday after the Nativity. If there is no Sunday between December 25 and January 1, their commemoration is moved to December 26. At an early date, some churches in the East began to commemorate certain important figures of the New Testament at the time of Theophany, and later during the Nativity season. In Syria, for example, Saint Stephen (December 27), Saints James (April 30) and John (September 26), and Saints Peter and Paul (June 29) were commemorated near the end of December. In Jerusalem, the saints mentioned above were combined with a feast that the Jews of Hebron celebrated on December 25 or 26 in honor of the Old Testament Patriarch Jacob. Later on, the Christians substituted Saint James (October 23) for Jacob, and then the commemoration of the Brother of the Lord became associated with his ancestor King David. In time, Saint Joseph was linked with Saints David and James. Afterfeast of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ On December 30, the Afterfeast of the Nativity, let us offer thanks to Christ our God, Who is born of a Virgin for our salvation. As the days begin to grow longer, we recall that the Lord is also called the Sun of Righteousness, and enlightens those who were in darkness. At this season of the year the daylight increases, and we remember the words of Saint John the Baptist, He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:30) F a c t s & F i g u r e s - W eek of December 23, 2018 Attendance 145 General Offerings $5,030.00 General Offerings Loose & Children s $355.91 Candles $360.00 Christmas Offering $4,210.00 St. Nicholas Day $25.00 Annual Project (Air Conditioning) $5,100.00 Total $15, 080.91 This Week Collected Required for Budget Short /Surplus Per Envelope $14,315.00 $4,973.08 $9,341.92 $58.39 Based On 160 Envelopes: Budgeted Amount Per Envelope Per Week: $34.30 Year To Date Collected Required for Budget Short/Surplus Per Envelope $252,976.79 $253,626.92 -$650.13 -$4.48
