AUGUST 2010 JOYFUL NOISE NEWS FOR PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA From the Moderator Gathered and Scattered, God is with us - Iona Community The summer months are often a time when we find ourselves scattered from our normal routine and gathered with others in new ways family, friends, new people in new places. We can be r e f r e s h e d a n d r e n e w e d a n d enlivened by these e x p e r i e n c e s, knowing that where ever we are God is with us. In May I attended Circle meetings with two groups of women from small churches who are feeling free to organize in new ways while they continue to attend to and care about the values and goals of our purpose prayer and Bible study, mission nearby and globally, working for justice and peace, being a caring, n u r t u r i n g community. I give thanks for their imagination and w i l l i n g n e s s t o innovate. June brought the Synod Gathering at Massanetta Springs, VA. Ten women from our Presbytery attended. We were e n r i c h e d a n d stretched by the worship, study, workshops and e s p e c i a l l y t h e interacting with the m a n y w o m e n, scattered from five states and 13 Presbyteries. We were gathered in common purpose, and experiencing God with us. June and July have been times of p l a n n i n g a n d organizing for our Fall Gatherings. They will be held on September 18th at Highlands and 25th at Lowell. The women of these PWs are preparing a generous welcome for us to gather to share and learn together. Save the dates. The Fall Gatherings will give opportunity to attend two workshops where ideas can be shared, and we can learn from each other as well as from the l e a d e r. T h e registration form is included in this Joyful Noise. Share it among the women o f y o u r Please pass this issue of Joyful Noise to the p e r s o n responsible for d i s t r i b u t i n g information to the Presbyterian Women in your church. Moderator: Sue Barrett 120 Grove Circle Brevard, NC 28712 828-884-7504 suebar@citcom.net congregation. It is strengthening to realize that in Presbyterian Women we are part of a large group of women with a common purpose every time (Continued on page 2)

AUGUST 2010 CREATIVE MINISTRIES I once heard someone predict the demise of Presbyterian Women because he thought we were not in tune with the times. I don t remember much more that he said, but it stuck with me. Of course I don t agree with his opinion, especially when I think about what a difference our Birthday and Thank Offerings make in the lives of hurting and struggling women and children all over the world. I think PW is not only in tune with the times, we are really hip! It is true it can be a challenge to get women to participate and that giving to these special offerings has declined. God as always gives us all the encouragement needed to do our work. Let us hold unswerving to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. (Hebrews 10:23-24). May we be faithful in spurring one another toward joyful and fruitful Birthday and Thank offerings this year. Shoulders to the wheel, my sisters in Christ! The harvest is plentiful! By Page 7 Gail Findlay Dear PW Friends, Grace Boyer, Associate Presbyter (for Mission, Justice and Peace, Hunger, etc.) called to invite leaders of PW to meet with Amanda Craft. Amanda is the PC(USA) mission coworker in Guatemala who is working specifically with the women there. She took up the work that Ellen Dozier had been doing. That means she is involved in the Obrera program that we have committed to support for three years. Amanda will be staying with Mimi Michael (our PW representative to the Guatemala Partnership Task Force) in Newton Thursday and coming to Morganton for "Let's Celebrate" on Saturday, Preaching at Waynesville on AMANDA CRAFT Sunday morning, then leaving our area. We could meet with her at Morganton Church/ Presbytery office at 11 and go out to lunch together with her. Grace would arrange for a restaurant where we could hear each other. This is a great opportunity to get to know Amanda and learn first hand about the current situation in Guatemala, particularly with the women. Obviously, we all have obligations that may not allow for this. However, if you are free or can rearrange your schedules, it will be a good opportunity for us, and for Amanda to hear of our concern and interest in her work. This does not have to be limited to the Coordinating team. If someone in your congregation would like to meet with Amanda, feel free to bring her. Do let me know one way or the other whether or not you are able to make this so we have an idea how many people will be there. See below for the website for a letter from Amanda Craft or check the Presbytery Website for additional information. Hope your summer is both relaxing and refreshing. Blessings, Sue Barrett Moderator, PW of PWNC To read a letter from Amanda go to: http://gamc.pcusa.org/ministries/missionconnections/craftamanda-20100225/
