Christ Presbyterian Church I have kept back nothing, but have declared to you the whole counsel of God. Acts 20:27 Covenant Renewal Service 24 June 2018

Be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent; for here we meet with a holy God. Before the service, speak to the Lord; during the service, let the Lord speak to you; after the service, speak to one another. About Receiving Communion All who trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, are baptized members in good standing of congregations that proclaim the gospel, are repentant of their sin and are at peace with their brothers and sisters in Christ are invited to partake of the Lord s Supper, feeding on the grace of God by faith. If you have not put your trust in Christ, please allow the elements to pass you by and take this opportunity to meditate on the meaning of the Gospel. A Word to Parents: Baptized children are invited to the table after they have made a profession of faith and have been received as communing members by the church to which their parents belong. As instituted by our Lord, wine is the element used in the Lord s Supper to show forth his blood shed on our behalf (Mark 14:23 25; 1 Cor 10:16; 11:20 21, 25; 1 Tim 4:3 4). If, however, for reasons of conscience, you are not able to participate using wine, grape juice is provided in the center of the tray. Also, gluten-free crackers are available for those who cannot eat bread. Nursery today: Amanda Grimes Jack Canales Next Sunday: Lauren Alexander Greyson Ea

Reflection Our satisfaction lies in submission to the divine embrace. Jan Van Ruysbroeck This is, indeed, the proper business of the whole life, in which men should daily exercise themselves, to consider the infinite goodness, justice, power and wisdom of God, in this magnificent theatre of God. John Calvin The reverent, godly Christian sees God first in his transcendent glory, majesty and holiness before he sees him in his love, mercy and grace. Jerry Bridges A man can no more diminish God s glory by refusing to worship him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word darkness on the walls of his cell. C. S. We Prepare to Meet with God Prelude Psalm 46 God is our refuge and our strength, In straits a present aid; And, therefore, though the earth remove We will not be afraid. Though hills amidst the seas be cast, Though troubled waters roar; Yea, though the swelling billows shake The mountains on the shore. A river is whose streams make glad The city of our God, The holy place wherein the Lord Most High has His abode. Yea, God is in the midst of her; Unmoved she stands for aye; And God will surely grant her help Before the break of day. The nations raged; the kingdoms moved; And when the earth had heard The mighty voice He sent abroad It melted at His word. The Lord of Hosts is on our side Our safety to secure; The God of Jacob is for us A refuge strong and sure. O come, behold what wondrous works Have by the Lord been wrought; Come, see what desolations great He on the earth has brought. To utmost ends of all the earth Wars into peace He turns; The bow He breaks, the spear He cuts, In fire the char-iot burns.

Be still and know that I am God; Among the nations I Will be exalted; I on earth Will be exalted high. The Lord of hosts is on our side, Our safety to secure; The God of Jacob is for us A refuge strong and sure. Psalm 124:8 Minister: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! 1 Timothy 1:2b All: Amen. Call to Worship Psalm 32:6a, 10 11 Minister: Let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; All: Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Minister: Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, All: and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! Hymn 295 Crown Him with Many Crowns Trinity Hymnal Prayer of Petition and Adoration

God Cleanses Us Call to Confession of Sin Psalm 32:1 4 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Corporate Confession of Sin and Supplication for Mercy (unison) O Lord, God, eternal and almighty Father, we confess and acknowledge most sincerely before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in iniquity and corruption, prone to do evil, incapable of any good, and that in our depravity we transgress Your holy commandments without end or ceasing: As a result, we purchase for ourselves, through your righteous judgment, our ruin and perdition. Nevertheless, O Lord, we are grieved that we have offended You: and we condemn ourselves and our sins with true repentance, beseeching Your grace to relieve our distress. O God and Father most gracious and full of compassion, have mercy upon us in the Name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. And as you blot out our sins and stains, magnify and increase in us day by day the grace of your Holy Spirit: that as we acknowledge our unrighteousness with all our heart, we may be moved by that sorrow which will bring forth true repentance in us, mortifying all our sins, and producing in us the fruits of righteousness and innocence which are pleasing unto You; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Declaration of Forgiveness Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. The Doxology (#731) Trinity Hymnal God Consecrates Us Prayer for Illumination Reading of Scripture Daniel 7 (p. 744) 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. 2 Daniel declared, I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, Arise, devour much flesh. 6 After this I looked, and behold, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things. 9 As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat;

his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. 11 I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. 15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious, and the visions of my head alarmed me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of the things. 17 These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever. 19 Then I desired to know the truth about the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of

iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet, 20 and about the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn that came up and before which three of them fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things, and that seemed greater than its companions. 21 As I looked, this horn made war with the saints and prevailed over them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom. 23 Thus he said: As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all the kingdoms, and it shall devour the whole earth, and trample it down, and break it to pieces. 24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise, and another shall arise after them; he shall be different from the former ones, and shall put down three kings. 25 He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. 26 But the court shall sit in judgment, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be consumed and destroyed to the end. 27 And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. 28 Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly alarmed me, and my color changed, but I kept the matter in my heart. Hymn 128 God Moves in a Mysterious Way Trinity Hymnal

Preaching of the Word Rev. John Canales Sermon Text: Revelation 1 (p. 1028) The Glorious and Risen Lord of All 1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. 4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. 8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. 9 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea. 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars,

from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Words of Institution Matt 26:26 28; Mk 14:22 24; Lk 22:17 20 Distribution of the Bread and the Cup Hymn During the bread The Power of the Cross Oh, to see the dawn Of the darkest day; Christ on the road to Calvary. Tried by sinful men, Torn and beaten, then Nailed to a cross of wood. This the pow r of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, Bore the wrath; We stand forgiven at the cross. Oh, to see the pain Written on Your face, Bearing the awesome weight of sin. Ev ry bitter thought, Ev ry evil deed Crowning your blood-stained brow. This the pow r of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame, Bore the wrath; We stand forgiven at the cross. Now the daylight flees; Now the ground beneath Quakes as its Maker bows His head. Curtain torn in two, Dead are raised to life- Finished! the vict ry cry. This the pow r of the cross: Christ became sin for us. Took the blame,

Bore the wrath; We stand forgiven at the cross. Oh, to see my name Written in the wounds, For through Your suff ring I am free. Death is crushed to death, Life is mine to live, Won through your selfless love! This the pow r of the cross: Son of God slain for us. What a love, What a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross. This the pow r of the cross: Son of God slain for us. What a love, What a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross. Scripture Reading During the cup John 3:16 18 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 5:21 24 As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 11:25 26 I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Nunc Dimittis (Song of Simeon) Now may your servant, Lord, according to your word, depart in exultation. My rest shall be serene, for now my eyes have seen your wonderful salvation. You did for all prepare this Gift, so great, so rare, fulfilling prophets story; A Light to show the way to Gentiles gone astray, and unto Israel s glory.
