Readlyn Chronicle Home of 857 Friendly People and One Old Grump Volume 10, No. 6, Compiled by Readlyn Community Club Designed/Printed by Horizon Publishing Co., Jesup, IA, July 5, 2017 Zion Lutheran Readlyn to celebrate 100 years On July 16, 2017, the current members of Zion Lutheran Church will hold a celebration in honor of the 100th anniversary of the church. Zion was organized on March 12, 1917, when thirty-eight charter members signed the constitution. The church building was erected in the summer of 1917. Everyone is invited to the 100th anniversary celebration which will begin with a 10 AM service with special guests and music. Following the service there will be a brief program for visiting and returning pastors and members to share their experiences and thoughts about Zion. A meal will be served. Zion s members hope to see many former pastors and members who have moved or have family connections to the church. The congregation has been greatly blessed over the past 100 years. The church is located at 240 Elmer Avenue in Readlyn. Center Inn changes ownership July 1 The Center Inn restaurant and bar was bought by Lyle and Tami Pries. The new name of the the Center Inn will be Readlyn Community Event Center and the restaurant and bar will be called The Watering Hole Bar and Grill. Lyle and Tami have a farm five miles south of Sumner, raising Percheron and Quarter Horses, cattle and corn. This has always been a dream for Tami to own a restaurant and event center. There will be a few new changes to the menu with some of them being salads, fish, steaks and wraps. Tuesday night will continue to be Mexican night with Margaritas, smothered burritos, walking tacos, taco salads, and hard/soft shell tacos. Wednesday night will also continue as Wing night with four different flavors. Thursday night will be Homemade Tenderloin night along with Hot Beef Sandwiches. Friday we will be offering Cod Fish and Broasted Chicken along with a salad bar. Saturday will be Steak Night with salad bar and Sunday will be Pizza Night. The full menu will still be offered every night except Sunday. The Friday night buffet will not be offered again until September. Hours of operation will be: Kitchen hours: Tuesday-Saturday 5:00-9:00 pm, Sunday 5:00-8:00 pm. Bar will be open Tuesday-Saturday 4:00-close and Sunday 5:00-8:00 pm. We hope to have some really fun events come to the bar along with some bands. Hours of operation in the bar will change so we are open during football games. SOMETHING NEW in the EVENT CENTER: FARMER'S MARKET We will be offering a Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings from 8:00am- 12 noon. We will be selling fresh produce like tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, melons whatever is in season. We will also have homemade pies, cookies, breads, and lots of baked goods to choose from. Fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee will also be served for a small fee. The Event Center is always taking bookings for all your needs, whether it be a birthday, anniversary, wedding, shower, or class reunion, and catering is always available. Stop in for a drink or supper and to say "hi" to the new owners. We are always open for new suggestions and ideas. Watch the paper for specials and upcoming events! Hope to see ya soon! 2017 Wapsie Valley Prom-Hollywood The theme for this year's Wapsie Valley Prom was Hollywood. The students had a Grand March on Saturday, April 21 at the Wapsie Valley Gymnasium. Each student walked the red carpet. After the Grand March, the students went out to dinner. After dinner, they returned to Fairbank and had a dance at the new IC hall. Once the dance ended, they returned to the high school for an after prom party. They had a hypnotist, games and food. The students won cash and prizes playing games. The Wapsie Valley Prost Prom would like to thank all of the sponsors for our post prom party. It was a huge success. The year went by so fast I cannot believe it is over. Of course it began last June with Grump Days, so many things to do, lots of activity with parades in Fairbank, Tripoli and Denver. Those were a lot of fun, I think we had at least 10 of the Old Grumps in each parade. Then there was the Bremer County Fair where the Readlyn Grump was recognized and was asked to bake a pie for an auction to benefit the new fairgrounds. It was required to be completely from scratch, and I did it myself, from picking the berries, (black berries, black raspberries, red raspberries and rhubarb,) to making the crust from scratch also. It took a couple of tries, but I also used a lattice weaved crust on the top. I was pleased that we had at least two bidders and the pie raised a considerable sum with Mayor Dan the winning bidder. Thank you Dan. As fall arrived, I was pleased to take part in decorating Readlyn for fall, taking part in the Historical Society Ice Cream Sunday open house, Grumptoberfest, and then the Wapsie Valley Education Foundation annual fund-raiser, and the Christmas Program and Santa visit. Things didn t slow down after the New Year, as the Valentine Ball, and Annual Meeting came quickly and then being out of town for the Easter Egg hunt. It was time once again to help plan and work on Grump Days 17. We are all so fortunate to have an ambitious community club to make this happen. I believe the highlight of the year was the promoting and actual construction of the Splash Pad. How awesome it was to see the generous members of this community and even those from out of town donate to such a great cause. The rewards were not shown until this spring when it opened and we got to see the masses of children enjoying it. Venues like these will definitely bring families to Readlyn. Thank you citizens of Readlyn. In closing, I want to thank everyone for the privilege to serve as the Official Readlyn Grump at the same time as Dayten Wittenburg served as Miss Readlyn. What a wonderful young lady she is and she certainly did her part to represent Readlyn. It was such a pleasure to travel around Iowa, some other states and even to Puerto Rico and find everyone asking who the Old Grump in Readlyn is? It was really awesome to inform them that I was and how the town Grump came to be. A special occasion occurred when a musical group called The Buffalo Gals, a string band from England was in the area and wanted to meet the Old Grump from Readlyn. After the parade this past Saturday, a gentleman from the east coast approached me and asked to have his picture taken with the Old Grump from Readlyn. He was visiting his brother from Waverly and was riding in the parade with the Waverly Fire Dept. when he saw me in the parade and made sure to meet me. It sure seems to me that the Old Grump has put Readlyn on the map and we need to promote the Grump which will make Readlyn even a better place to live. Now, we have a new Grump, Louie Hartman has already done so much for this city, but I m sure she will be doing a lot more. I look forward to reading her column in the Chronicle. God Bless you all, Grump 2016 Charlie Albrecht Miss Readlyn Comments By Dayten Wittenburg What a humbling opportunity it has been to represent the town of Readlyn. I have learned this town may be small, but it has a very large heart. I d like to thank the community for their abundant support of our youth and of me as Miss Readlyn. You have all shown me so much kindness this year and I can t express to you all how much that means to me. I am so blessed to have grown up in a community where everyone knows everyone and we all treat each other like family. The community of Readlyn is what makes this town thrive and it will continue to thrive with the support of its community members. Speaking of community members, there are some in particular that I d like to thank for their assistance and extraordinary support during my reign this past year. I d first like to thank my family. My parents, brother, aunts, uncles, and grandparents have all been there for support along my journey. They ve all helped to push me to reach my goals and become the best version of myself. I am so grateful for the love and support that my family continually gives me. I would not be who I am today without them. Throughout this past year they have attended events that I have been a part of either through school or as Miss Readlyn. The love of my family is what truly brings joy into my life and I am so grateful for them. Secondly, I d like to thank Kim Brown. She sponsored me through her restaurant, Inspired. Kim has always been there to cheer me on. Without her, I would not have had the opportunity to become Miss Readlyn, further meet and get to know the people of Readlyn, and have the chance to be a leader and role model within the community of Readlyn. Never failing to put a smile on my face, they have served as role models and inspiration for me this entire past year. I am so lucky to have gotten to know them better!. I feel so fortunate to have served the town of Readlyn with Charlie this past year. The festivities will be Sunday, July 23, 2017 at the Center Inn, Readlyn, from 1-4 p.m. It will include a free dance, featuring "Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen." They were married July 21, 1957 at St. John's Evangelical Reformed Church in Clarence, Iowa. The couple met at Iowa State Teacher's College in 1955. Both had careers as teachers, and Colby was principal at Wapsie Valley schools for 28 years. The couple is celebrating not just their 60th wedding anniversary this year, but Wayne Teisinger VFW Auxiliary Meets The Wayne Teisinger V.F.W. Auxiliary #5661 met June 13, 2017 at the Readlyn Community Library with seven members present. The meeting opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes and treasurer s reports were read and accepted. General orders and chairman reports were read by all. Volunteer hours were turned in. A bill was paid for carnations for memorial Day. Every member is asked to give $10.00 for The Buddy Poppy Drive, and the public is welcome to participate. It was reported that memorial Day went well. Colby and Joyce Withers their 50th year living in Readlyn! They had three daughters, Jolene (Greg) Tagtow of Cedar Falls, with children Ian and Collin; the late Connie Erhardt Adrian, with son, Ryan; and Vicki (Erik) Gosnell of Cedar Falls, with son Dominick. Burton and Ellen Thies and Verdeen Pavelec attended the V.F.W. and Auxiliary Iowa State Convention Center on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Election of officers was held. The Auxiliary received a certificate for 100% in membership. We received an invitation for new state president, Charlene Schneiders. Open house August 12, 2017 in Cedar Rapids. Visits to Readlyn s Historical Society On Tuesday, May 30 the Readlyn 4th grade class, along with their teacher Mrs. Lincoln, toured the Readlyn Historical Museum. They study Readlyn s history from the The Good Old Days cookbook and history book before coming to visit. One of their questions was where was the Readlyn Hospital located and one of the doctors Dr. Eli Osnes who came to Readlyn around 1919. Babies were even delivered in the Readlyn Hospital. Common ailments were whooping cough, gallstones, measles and more. The 4th graders got to hear music played on the Victrola. Many items of interest were ice tongs, the Readlyn sign from the train depot and especially the class pictures of those who graduated from Readlyn High School. The children were looking for their grandparents or great-grandparents. Thank you for coming and visiting us again. Gary enjoys sharing his knowledge of Readlyn s history. Scouts Visit On Friday, April 28, the scouts, along with their leaders Ray Knight and Layne Hilsenbeck, toured the Readlyn Historical Museum. GaryLee Thurm and Ron Leistibow shared information and answered questions about the old gas pumps, the barber chair from former Readlyn Barbere Herb Wittenburg, the Readlyn High School Score Board, old store ledgers and more. The boys who enjoyed the tour were Ryker Oberle, Hayden Hilsenbeck, Reece Hagenow and Dereck Hilsenbeck. They enjoyed seeing all 27 pictures of Ole Grumps hanging on the wall as both Ron and Gary were Grumps. A big thank you to all three candidates entering the Miss Readlyn contest for 2017- Brandi Marticoff, Charlotte Lundberg and Erika Jeanes. This fun evening started at the Readlyn Event Center where each candidate came wearing their beautiful prom gowns. Three judges were ready to do the interviews and mark their tally as to which should become Miss Readlyn 2017. Bev and Jim Collins created a scrumptious buffet and donated table linens as well as china and crystal for the formal setting. There were 33 friends, family and guests who enjoyed this wonderful meal after the judging was complete. Then off to take pictures by Doese and next to the park to be introduced by the MC Ed Traeger. Wednesday, July 5, 2017 Readlyn Chronicle Page 11 Wapsie Valley Future Farmers of America Wapsie FFA Leaders Attend District Conference By Iowa FFA Association and Lydia Martins, Chapter Reporter June - Each year the Northeast District and Iowa FFA officers plan and facilitate Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) Conferences for FFA members in the Northeast District. Hawkeye Community College welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Northeast district on June 7, 2017. From Wapsie Valley FFA attending were: President-Erika Jeanes, Vice President-Jacob Risse, Secretary-Julia LaRue, Treasurer-Jacob Joerger, Reporter-Lydia Martins and Sentinel-Olivia Willey. While at Hawkeye Community College on June 7, district and state officers lead four interactive workshops for FFA Chapter leaders, many of which are officers, for the annual COLT Conference. The workshops facilitated were developing local FFA Chapter programs focused in the areas of advocating for the agriculture industry, connecting with stakeholders, recruiting for the local chapter, and working as a cohesive team. FFA leaders also received training relative to their specific officer duties within the local chapter. I felt the COLT conference provided us the opportunity to learn more about our duties as officers and gave us a chance to learn more about the FFA organization and program, stated Erika Jeanes, Chapter President. Northeast District President, Rachel Zumbach, stated, COLT conference provides a chance for FFA members to learn more about their responsibility as a local leader and is a conference for members to meet and connect with state, district and other chapter officers. COLT conference programming is designed as a two-year rotation of local leaders training. The focus areas of next year s program include agriculture literacy, time management, professionalism, and self-confidence. The goal is to engage FFA members in learning about the tools that would allow them to be successful in anything they are part of through high school and beyond. Many members and guests were recognized and awarded for their participation and accomplishments throughout the past year. From parent recognition to senior leadership awards, the afternoon was filled with FFA and community members achievements. The awards and recognitions are below: Parents and school administrators were recognized for their unending support towards the members and the overall FFA program. In addition, parents of the officer team and graduating seniors were specially recognized. Following, Jacob Hammitt received the Dekalb Award. Mrs. Doese then recognized all of the graduating seniors for their hard work over their years they had been in FFA, and she also recognized retiring officers. Star awards were then given in each grade and in overall areas. These awards are selected from the students merit points earned for this FFA year. Distinguished Service Award: Oran Mutual Telephone Company. Blue and Gold Award: Joe Duffy, Jodi Risse, and Jim Stanton. Honorary Award: Jess Lampe and Randy Woods Parents of officers were then recognized, and the officer team did a retiring ceremony. Mrs. Doese and Ashley Beierschmitt were recognized for leading the chapter, and finally, the new officer team was installed. The new officers are as follows: President: Erika Jeanes. Vice President: Jacob Risse. Secretary: Julia LaRue. Treasurer: Jacob Joerger. Reporter: Lydia Martins. Sentinel: Olivia Willey The banquet was a great success and reflection of the achievements of the members throughout the year. Retiring president, Jacob Hammitt, stated, Being able to see all the support from fellow FFA members, parents, and community members was very humbling. Nothing compares to knowing you have an entire community backing you and the Wapsie Valley FFA chapter. I ve been very blessed, lucky, and proud to have experienced that. Congratulations to all of the Wapsie Valley FFA members, and best of luck to the new officer team as the lead throughout the upcoming year.
Wednesday, July 5, 2017 Readlyn Chronicle Page 13 The Readlyn Chronicle through the years By Bob Thran News Items from The Waverly Democrat in November of 1932: Mrs. W Daniels is running an up-to-date restaurant in Readlyn. Meals and lunches served at all times. Readlyn is about to have a newspaper, The Readlyn Times. S. L. Sherman of Bristow will own, operate and edit the paper and is now offering subscriptions through his agent, George Vanderwalker, at $1.50 per year. Markets were: eggs 15, hogs $4.40, corn 31, oats 23, wheat 67-86, barley 44-47, potatoes 21. The first edition of the Readlyn Chronicle was published December 1, 1932. A portion of the first edition is displayed. The Reporter was located in the building occupied at present by the cafe INSPIRED. Had a delicious Rueben sandwich there. Wayne Kuethe and I both helped out at The Readlyn Chronicle and when we ate at the cafe, INSPIRED, a few weeks ago it was a pleasure for us to discuss where the press and other equipment were located. The shop was in the front of the building and the Shermans had a small living space in the rear. The building was owned by the bank, as was the case with much property having been foreclosed on during the depression. The paper was successful from its outset even though it was launched during the third year of The Great Depression. The paper continued to meet the needs of Readlyn and surrounding communities. Ads were not only solicited from Readlyn merchants but also from Fairbank, Dunkerton, Denver, Tripoli, Sumner, Waverly and Oelwein businesses. News items were inserted from Klinger, Artesian, Buck Creek, Grove Hill, Oran, Fairbank, Denver, Dunkerton and Readlyn. The subscription price of The Readlyn Chronicle varied from $1.50 per year down to 50 cents per year. Each issued had to be mailed with a one cent stamp. At 50 cents per year the paper would lose 4 cents for each subscription. Lou and Grace were able to encourage merchants and others to advertise. In one of the very early editions Harrison Motors, Ford dealer in Waverly managed by Ernie Coonradt, placed a full page ad. I checked with Bob Coonradt and he estimated that in 1932 new Model A Fords were selling at $275-$375 and a used Model A for $100- $250, Rueben Schutte, father of Elton and Orlyn, listed his farm auction in a full page ad in one of the very first editions, and Chris Everding placed a farm auction full page ad in 1936. In 1942 Grace s health began failing and the quality of the paper began to deteriorate. Some editions were skipped. Grace died in October of 1942. Lou had lost his lifelong partner and hadn t resumed publishing. I was thirteen years old when my Dad, Oscar Thran, suggested that I approach Mr. Sherman to ask him if I could help. When I went to see him he listened and immediately sat me on a stool in front of a tray containing approximately 75 compartments for small letters, capital letters, numbers and punctuation. He showed me how to set type, one letter at a time. No wages were discussed nor did I care. I have no idea how long I helped out but I do remember two times Lou pulled out his billfold, handing me a dollar bill giving it to me and saying this was to help me out. Looking back, the two dollars I received from Mr.Sherman was of no consequence. It did give me satisfaction to think that I gave some of my time to someone who needed help. My Dad made a great suggestion. In visiting with a good friend, Wayne Kuethe, retired from teaching, living in Shell Rock, I was pleasantly surprised when he said the Kuethe family was involved with the printing of The Readlyn.Chronicle. The Kuethe family lived at that time in an apartment above the paper. Elmer Kuethe, Wayne s father, would feed the press, Wayne would set type and Dale, Jane Kuethe Meier would fold papers and, along with Wayne, put the one cent stamps on the papers. Judy Henn, being five years younger was not yet old enough to help. With the announcement of the founding of The Readlyn Historical Society, the community responded by donating many items of historical interest. Among them were a dozen or so issues of The Readlyn Chronicle with the last issue in our possession being dated Thursday, June 8, 1942. I have no idea when operations ceased. To the best of my knowledge Lou moved to Waucoma, Iowa. There were news items in the Chronicle stating that the Shermans sometimes visited Waucoma. My neighbor here in Nashua inquired of the older folks in Waucoma if they recognized the name of Lou Sherman- No knowledge of the Shermans. If anyone has any information about where the Shermans are buried please contact the historical society. Wayne and I agreed that setting type by hand was the most tedious work we had ever encountered. Each letter was placed by hand in a form and at the end of each line we had to inject blank type between the words to complete the row. After the paper was run the type had to be returned to its compartment in the tray. Wayne and I attempted to analyze Lou and Grace Sherman. We describe Grace as being just a plain person wearing plain clothes and having straight black hair. On hot summer nights she would often sit on the front steps of the Chronicle. She was the editor and the driving force behind the success of the paper. She had her favorite homes in Readlyn she visited gathering news items such as who visited whom, who went somewhere on business, who was sick, etc. My Grandma Thran was often visited. We estimated Lou being about 5 8, weighing about 120 pounds, having energy, and being about 60 years old in 1942. Lou was indeed an interesting character. With pistol in hand he demonstrated to Wayne his fast draw technique. He also stated to some people that when he was younger he was a lawman out west and on one occasion shot dead a couple of outlaws. Conclusion from the two of us was: Who Knows??? The Readlyn Chronicle was for 14 plus years an important part of Readlyn recording our local history, the community being enriched because Lou and Grace moved to Readlyn. Although the paper was sometimes referred to as The Readlyn Reminder the paper was greatly appreciated and supported by the people of Readlyn and the surrounding area. Many thanks to Wayne Kuethe for his assistance on the history of The Readlyn Chronicle. It was a pleasure to do a story about one important part of Readlyn history. The Readlyn Chronicle occupied the building on the right. The building on the left contained the egg buying business of Albert Oltrogge. In 1932 Albert also sold Cities service gas from a pump in front. The Readlyn Historical Society Begins Several years ago I was looking in some boxes in my Mother's basement in Nashua and I was shocked by what I had discovered. There were papers from many historical world events such as Charles Lindbergh crossing the Atlantic, but the greatest discovery was the first and second editions of The Readlyn Chronicle published in 1932.. What to do with this find. I talked it over with my Mother, Loueen Diekmann Thran, and decided we should offer these many items to the Town of Readlyn. I called Don Koschmeder, mayor of Readlyn, and asked him to put me on the agenda at the next council meeting. I brought many papers, pictures and articles and displayed them on a table. The Town of Readlyn was offered as a donation these items if they would establish a historical society and with little hesitancy the council approved the founding of the Readlyn Historical Society. I had displayed these same items earlier at a historical meeting at Wartburg College. Bill Lynes, Chairman of the Bremer County Historical Society, was angry these items were not donated to his group in Waverly. Although I lived in Chickasaw County, I was on the board of The Bremer County Historical Society at that time. We have never regretted our decision to donate our discovery to the Town of Readlyn. Wayne Kuethe and Bob Thran are standing inside the aforementioned building near the spot where they set type. Coming topics on the history of Readlyn The next issue I plan to introduce myself and reveal the role my parents and grandparents played in the history of Readlyn. In the next issue after that, the September issue of the modern Readlyn Chronicle, the Civil War history will be the topic. Readlyn was not incorporated until 1905, however some of the citizens in this area played a part in the Civil War, 1861-1865. I am aware of two persons who fought in the Civil War, George Vanderwalker and Leopold Leistikow. If any of you have ancestors involved in the Civil War, please inform us. If a picture is available please send it or just give us a name and any facts you have about his life. I volunteered to write about Readlyn history, but I will need information from your photo albums, scrapbooks, memories, stories from your ancestors and your own experiences to give a picture of life long ago. I will notify you of the topic two issues in advance and really look forward to your assistance in exploring Readlyn history. The students had strength and stability rubrics that their bridges were tested on. Fairbank and Readlyn Talent Shows! Students did an excellent job showcasing their many talents and put on an entertaining show. We had singing, break dancing, gymnastics, a skit written and performed by the 6th graders, and more! In conjunction with funds donated by McElroy Trust, the scholarship committee is able to award four $2,000 scholarships to local students. The scholarship winners are as follows: Alec Marticoff is a graduate of Wapsie Valley High School. His academic achievements are outstanding, having a 4.0 GPA and completing 39 college credits at the same time. While in school Alec has been involved with several sports, FFA, and he has shared in opportunities offered by his faith family as well. His sister and mother have ongoing health issues, and that has inspired Alec to realize his pursuit of a medical career. Alec Marticoff Pearls of Wisdom By Pastor Matthew Moss Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church Independence and Dependence July is well known for the celebration of our nation s Declaration of Independence, casting off the cruel and oppressive shackles of a tyrannical king. In such a vein independence is good. Breaking free of wickedness and injustice is important for the health and growth of a society and the families that make it up. BUT, simply freeing yourself from one error does not necessarily mean that you have replaced that error with something good. Indeed, we can often replace one error with another. For example, if you were to break free of a smoking habit by taking up binge drinking and alcoholism, well, sure, you ve freed yourself from dependence on tobacco but have replaced it with something equally destructive. So also in the case of our nation s history it is not enough to focus on what we broke free from a cruel king s unjust rule. We must also learn and (re)dedicate ourselves to what good things were established. We must not only decry the evil that was rejected, but we must conserve the good that was put in its place. The founding fathers of our nation proposed, established, and preserved a restricted independence. It was independence from unjust rule. They did not let the pendulum swing to the opposite extreme total independence, everyone free to do whatever he or she saw fit to do. That kind of individualism and total independence would lead to a complete breakdown of society, family, and life in all of its facets. No, the dependence on the reigning king was jettisoned and replaced with a dependence on the rule of law. In these United States we are not dependent on a monarch s rule, but we are dependent. We depend upon one another in families and communities. We depend upon elected and appointed authorities to enforce laws for public order. We depend, most of all, upon God. The founding fathers knew this, even those who were not Christian, but deists who denied the miraculous salvation of Jesus Christ. At the bare minimum they recognized that civilized man could not be truly independent and individualistic, focused only on himself. That would replace the tyranny of a king with the tyranny of a mob. Now as a Christian and a Lutheran Pastor I would go further than the founders. We are not only dependent on some God for natural laws, order, morality, and providing rain for our crops. We are dependent on that God for all revelation, all knowledge, and even our salvation. By His revelation we do know His Name, His essence, that He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit- one God, three persons. We know that His will and nature is gracious and loving. He has demonstrated our total reliance and dependence on Him in the very death and resurrection of the Son, Jesus Christ. That is one King you cannot declare independence from! Praise be to God He rules in grace and mercy instead of cruelty and oppression. More than this- adding grace upon grace- we are dependent on this Lord Jesus not only for salvation once upon a time, but we depend on Him for daily forgiveness. We require His divine aide each day. We pray to Him and in His name, gratefully receiving from Him whatever good we may receive. Ignorant or forgetful of THIS dependence, and the rule of THIS king, our own, American independence really would be meaningless. Thanks be to God, we are ruled by a merciful Lord and a King who justifies us.
