F O C U S O N July 29, 2018 PRAYER QUILT MINISTRY The Prayer Quilt Ministry, hard at work during one of their monthly Saturday morning work parties, in Room 300 The First UMC Prayer Quilt Ministry is part of Prayers & Squares, an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt. Volunteers may work from home and then meet monthly in Room 300 to work on the quilts together. First UMC members Maile Marquand and Sue Payne head the Ministry. About the quilts: The quilt is not just a gift of a quilt; it is a gift of love and prayer. It is an affirmation of our faith in God and our belief in God s power to comfort, strengthen, and heal. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers with the ends left free to be tied. Members of the congregation say a prayer for the recipient as they tie these knots at Sunday Sanctuary worship service. Prayer quilts are for anyone of any age who is in special need of prayer, primarily due to serious illness, injury, sorrow, or challenging life circumstances. Anyone in the congregation or associated with First UMC can request or sponsor a prayer quilt. How to sponsor a quilt: 1. Get permission & prayer: Confirm that the person would like to receive the quilt and prayers. Then, consider the prayer with them. This will be shared with the congregation. 2. Contact the ministry: Maile Marquand or Sue Payne (see below) to go over details. 3. Come to church: Be present at the service when the quilt will be hung and available for the congregation to pray over. After, a member of the Prayer Quilt Ministry will take down the quilt to give to you or the recipient (if they are able to attend). Contact Maile Marquand (maile@rugbooks.com), or Sue Payne (sue.f.payne@gmail.com), to sponsor a quilt. For more information, visit: santamonicaumc.org/prayerquiltministry. ALUMNI FUND Santa Monica College Foundation Honors Dr. James Smith Santa Monica College Foundation is honoring Dr. James Smith with a new fund: The Smith & Co. Alumni Fund. Established in 1972 by Dr. Smith, Smith & Company consisted of young energetic students who provided a musical experience for countless audiences throughout the Los Angeles area. An early press release described the group as entertaining service clubs and other organizations, they were active public relation agents for Santa Monica College. The bonds in the group have lasted over 40 years, growing stronger as members met for reunions. Original members appreciated their time in the group so much that they wanted to honor Jim and his legacy with this fund. Donations will be used to benefit the vocal music program at Santa Monica College and its students. Gifts will ensure that they remember those who have died, and acknowledge the work and dedication of founder Dr. James Smith.
