* HYMN Man of Sorrows! What a Name Words and Music: Philip P. Bliss, 1875. * HYMN Gethsemane Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. 2009 Thankyou Music 1. To see the King of heaven fall In anguish to His knees, The Light and Hope of all the world Now overwhelmed with grief. What nameless horrors must He see, To cry out in the garden: Oh, take this cup away from me Yet not my will but Yours, Yet not my will but Yours. 2. To know each friend will fall away, And heaven's voice be still, For hell to have its vengeful day Upon Golgotha's hill. No words describe the Saviour's plight - To be by God forsaken Till wrath and love are satisfied And every sin is paid And every sin is paid * INVOCATION 3. What took Him to this wretched place, What kept Him on this road? His love for Adam's cursed race, For every broken soul. No sin too slight to overlook, No crime too great to carry, All mingled in this poisoned cup And yet He drank it all, The Saviour drank it all. - Page 2 - - Page 3 -
CONFESSION OF SIN Lord Jesus, like Judas, we have betrayed you; Like Peter, we have denied you; And like the other disciples, we have forsaken you. Yet you remain faithful to us unto death, even death on a cross. We plead for your forgiveness and mercy. And we ask that you strengthen us so that we do not turn aside But follow you to the very end for the final victory belongs to you. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING John 19:28-30 The Death of Jesus 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst. 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. PRAYER ASSURANCE OF PARDON Isaiah 53:3-6 3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. SCRIPTURE READING Hebrews 10:1-14 Christ's Sacrifice Once for All 1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. - Page 4 - - Page 5 -
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book. 8 When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will. He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. MESSAGE Luke 23:44-49 The Death of Jesus 44 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. THE LORD S SUPPER HYMN 247 Hymn during Passing of the Bread O Sacred Head, Now Wounded Words: Bernard of Clairvaux, 1091-1153. Music: Hans Lec Hassler, 1601. Arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach, 1729. 46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! And having said this he breathed his last. 47 Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, Certainly this man was innocent! 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home beating their breasts. 49 And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance watching these things. HYMN 252 Hymn during Passing of the Cup When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Words: Isaac Watts, 1707, 1709. Music: Gregorian Chant. Prayers of Meditation For Those Not Participating in Communion Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following You as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what You claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and show me the reality of who You are. Amen. Prayer of Belief Heavenly Father, I admit that I am more sinful than I ever before believed, but, through Your Son Jesus, I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank You that He lived the life I should have lived, and paid the debt and punishment I deserved. Receive me now for His sake. I turn from my sins and receive Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, help me to look to You as the fulfillment of all my needs, and to turn from every false satisfaction to feed on You, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. Amen. PRAYER BENEDICTION Worshipers are asked to leave the sanctuary in silence. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, You have called us to follow You in a life of committed discipleship in Your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with Your people, and live in the fullness of Your Spirit. Amen. - Page 10 -
