THE LORD S DAY OF JANUARY 22, THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2017 9.30 AM But the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. (Habakkuk 2:20)

Welcome Preparatory Devotional & Prayer WE PREPARE TO MEET WITH GOD Asterisks (*) denote portions for congregation to stand. Unless otherwise stated, all Scripture quotations are from the English Standard Version (ESV). Congregational readings are in bold. The Greeting of God The Call to Worship: Psalm 98:1-2: GOD SUMMONS US INTO HIS PRESENCE 1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvellous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. WE RESPOND TO GOD S SUMMONS *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 731, Doxology *Opening Prayer *Hymn of Praise: Trinity Hymnal 15, Come, Let Us Sing unto the Lord Reading of the Law: Exodus 20:14: 14 You shall not commit adultery. GOD DECLARES HIS LAW Silent Prayer of Confession Confession of Sin (Unison): WE RESPOND TO GOD S LAW Heavenly Father, Lord of all purity, you have called us to be holy as you are holy, to love as you love. Yet we find ourselves drawn to the sins of the world. We have filled our eyes with uncleanness, cherished fornication in our hearts, 2

and encouraged perversion in the name of compassion. Father, we turn from our impurities and return to you for life and happiness. Be gracious to us, O Lord. Purify our hearts by your Holy Spirit! Through Jesus our Lord, who died for sinners (Rom 5:6) and fulfilled all righteousness (Mt 3:15), forgive our many sins. Amen. Reading of the Gospel: Romans 5:18-21: GOD DECLARES HIS GOSPEL 18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Confession of the Gospel (Unison): Adapted from Luther s Small Catechism I believe that Jesus Christ is truly God, born of the Father in eternity and also truly man, born of the Virgin Mary. He is my Lord! He redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, bought and won me from all sins, death and the authority of the Devil. It did not cost Him gold or silver, but His holy, precious blood, His innocent body His death! Because of this, I am His very own, will live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him righteously, innocently and blessedly forever, just as He is risen from death, lives and reigns forever. Assurance of Pardon: Hebrews 5:7-9 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him. 3

WE RESPOND TO THE GOSPEL *Hymn of Thanksgiving: Trinity Hymnal 92, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Reading of the Word of God: Psalm 40: GOD TEACHES US HIS WORD 1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. 2 He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! 5 You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. 6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. 7 Then I said, Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: 8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. 9 I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. 10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness 4

from the great congregation. 11 As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! 12 For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me. 13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! 14 Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt! 15 Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, Aha, Aha! 16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, Great is the LORD! 17 As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God! Preaching of the Word of God: The God who Rescues Tan Huai Tze *Hymn of Response: Trinity Hymnal 691: It Is Well with My Soul Prayer of Response The Lord s Prayer (Unison): Matthew 6:19-13 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 5

The Offering *The Confession of Faith (Unison): The Apostles' Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic + Church; + universal the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *Hymn of Consecration: Trinity Hymnal 103, Holy God, We Praise Your Name *Benediction GOD DISMISSES US WITH HIS BLESSINGS 6
