(from The Baptismal Covenant I in the United Methodist Hymnal) never forget, when you hear the progress of enlightenment vaunted, that the devil's best trick is to persuade you that he doesn't exist!" Sharing the Peace of Christ Children s Message Reading from the Hebrew Scripture Proverbs 25:21-22 Reading from the Christian Scripture Romans 12:9-21 Response to the Word (sung) Hymn Sermon Goodness is Stronger than Evil The Faith We Sing #2219 A Mighty Fortress is Our God U.M. Hymnal #110 Verses 1, 2, 3 Overcome Evil with Good Prayer of Confession (Jurgen Moltmann) Heavenly Father, we call upon You in Jesus name. We come with empty hands. We have not been able to love our enemies. As a rule we have never even seen them. We have avoided them. When we saw them, we felt only fear and anger, not love. So we come to You, not as the children of Your love, but as the enemy of our enemies, beseeching You for ourselves and all the others; Bless those who curse You, do good to those who hate You. Forgive us for what we have failed to do for our enemies. You lead us out of the constriction of fear and out of the prison of hate, into the wide space of freedom. Let us see Your sun, which rises upon the evil and the good, and rejoice in its warmth, together with our enemies. Amen. 3

Lord Have Mercy U.M. Hymnal #482 Silent Prayer Words of Forgiveness In the name of Jesus Christ, we are a forgiven people. Glory to God! Alleluia! Amen. As forgiven and reconciled people let us offer our gifts to God. Offering Offering Response The Lord s Prayer (Albert Hay Malotte) Jerry Bullard, organ Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow U.M. Hymnal #95 Prayer of Dedication Ritual for Holy Communion Holy God, In the beginning was darkness, mystery, and You. By Your own Word, You shattered the darkness with light. You set in the sky radiant beams of sunlight And punctured the night sky with sparking jewels. You forever changed our darkness. Holy God, Though there are shadows and worries, You have placed Your Word in us to be a lamp for our feet. You have given Your Spirit like a bbright guiding star. You fill us with Your Love as glorious as the sun. You place Your Truth like a cresent moon. Every darkness is overcome with Light. And every Light contains shafts of Your eternal Light. The Lord s Prayer U.M. Hymnal #895 4

God of the sun and stars, we praise You and with all the creatures of earth and all the company of heaven we join the unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Ever-persistent and ever-loving God, You placed a star in the sky to guide people from far and near to Your child Therefore, Holy God; grant that in praise and thanksgiving, we may be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable in Your sight; and that our lives may proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out Your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and cup...through Your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in Your holy Church, all honor and glory is Yours, almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. Invitation to Receive the Bread and the Cup Sharing the Bread and Cup Aria in F (George F. The First Simple Rule : Do No Harm From The General Rules of the United Methodist Church It is therefore expected of all who continue therein that they should continue to evidence their desire of salvation, First: By doing no harm, by avoiding evil of every kind, especially that which is most generally practiced, such as: The taking of the name of God in vain. The profaning the day of the Lord, either by doing ordinary work therein or by buying or selling. Drunkenness: buying or selling spirituous liquors, or drinking them, unless in cases of extreme necessity. Slaveholding; buying or selling slaves. Fighting, quarreling, brawling, brother going to law with brother; returning evil for evil, or railing for railing; the using many words in buying or selling. The buying or selling goods that have not paid the duty. The giving or taking things on usury i.e., unlawful interest. Uncharitable or unprofitable conversation; particularly speaking evil of magistrates or of ministers. Doing to others as we would not they should do unto us. Doing what we know is not for the glory of God, as: The putting on of gold and costly apparel. The taking such diversions as cannot be used in the name of the Lord Jesus. The singing those songs, or reading those books, which do not tend to the knowledge or love of God. Softness and needless self-indulgence. Laying up treasure upon earth. Borrowing without a probability of paying; or taking up goods without a probability of paying for them. 6

ANNOUNCEMENTS February 7, 2016 UPCOMING WORSHIP The Way A Lenten Pilgrimage Pilgrimage describes Jesus journey to Jerusalem and to the cross at the end of His life. It also refers to His 40 days in the wilderness before His ministry began. Our Lenten pilgrimage can be seen as following the road Christ walked to Jerusalem and to the cross; it can be seen as the journey of conversion (which happens again and again in our lives); and also as following the path to the center of the soul. The purpose of all our journeys is to come home said G.K. Chesterton. All our Lenten pilgrimages lead us home to God, and bring us to the foot of the cross. February 10: Inter-Generational Ash Wednesday Service. 6:30pm Lenten Worship Series begins. The Way A Lenten Pilgrimage. Joel 2:1-2, 12-17. The Way Back(U-Turn). Come for SPIRIT night low-cost meal at 5:30pm, and to join in an art project for all ages, which will be incorporated into the evening service. Gretchen Considine, who recently walked the pilgrimage route in France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela, known as the Camino de Santiago, will be our special guest in worship. February 14. First Sunday in Lent Luke 4:1-13. The Wandering Way (Maze). Special Music: solo by Mara Schick and duet by John Ellington and Rex Flygt. Share Your Voice!
