Please feel free to inquire about our congregation through the pastors, one of the ushers, or one of the members. If you are a visitor from out of town, please be sure to introduce yourself to one of the pastors after the service. We welcome all of you to come and worship with us again. 2 HOLY COMMUNION Today we have the privilege of receiving Christ s true body and blood in, with and under the bread and wine of Holy Communion. Through this sacrament the Holy Spirit seals to us the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation for the strengthening of our faith. Scriptures also teach that as we commune together, we are publicly testifying to a complete unity of faith based on a confession of all of God s Word. For this reason we respectfully request that all of those who are not members of the WELS or our sister ELS please speak with one of the pastors before communing with us. We remind you to be sure to fill out a communion registration card and place it in the offering plate. For your personal preparation before communing, turn to pages 156 and 11 in the front of the hymnal. Thank you. A PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Oh keep us in your Word, we pray; the guile and rage of Satan stay! Oh may your mercy never cease! Give concord, patience, courage, peace. Oh grant that in your Holy Word we here may live and die, dear Lord, and when our journey s ending here, receive us into glory there. Amen. (See also the prayers on pages 10-11 of Christian Worship.) SERVICE THEME What a gift God gave to his Church through the Lutheran Reformation! The bright light of God s new covenant, his saving grace in Jesus Christ, pierced through the darkness of law-oppressed religion. As sons and daughters of the Lutheran Reformation, we both preserve this truth and share it with the world. ORDER OF WORSHIP Service of Word and Sacrament on page 26 in the front of the hymnal OPENING HYMN 3 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Hymn 200 v 1, 2 M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. HOLY BAPTISM IN 7:45 SERVICE HYMN PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. A Mighty Fortress Is Our Good Hymn 200 v 3, 4 Gracious Lord, our refuge and strength, pour out your Holy Spirit on your faithful people. Keep them steadfast in your Word, protect and comfort them in all temptations, defend them against all their enemies, and bestow on the Church your saving peace; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD A LESSON FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT Daniel 3:16-28 Like the three men in the fiery furnace, not even the threat of death could keep Martin Luther from proclaiming the Gospel Truth. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. The king s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire? They replied, Certainly, O king. He said, Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods. Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here! So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. ADULT CHOIR IN 7:45 SERVICE A Mighty Fortress Is Our God by Dan Forrest A mighty Fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe now seeks to work us woe; his wrath and power are great and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing. Were not the right Man on our side the Man of God s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He: Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same, and He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure. One little word shall fell him. That Word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also. The body they may kill; God s truth abideth still. His kingdom is forever! Copyright 2016 Beckenhorst Press Onelicense A-713891 KINDERGARTEN IN 10:30 SERVICE The Bible s not the biggest book, although it is the best! It tells us of our Savior s love, and how we have been blessed. Refrain: The young and old, they all should hear the message on its pages. For God has made it very clear, his Word is for all ages! The more we learn about God s Word, the more we come to see, Without the love of God above, how lost we all would be! Refrain Copyright 1986 Mary Dorn Lippert God s Word A LESSON FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT Revelation 14:6-7 Through faithful confessors like Martin Luther the eternal gospel continues to be proclaimed from generation to generation. Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth--to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water. HYMN OF THE DAY The Church s One Foundation Hymn 538 SERMON Mark 13:5-11 As children of the Lutheran Reformation, may we stand up for the truth in a world filled with the devil s lies. Jesus said to them: Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, claiming, I am he, and will deceive many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. Martin Luther A Christian 1. A man of faith. 2. A man armed with God s Word. Pastor Guse 6 7

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. GATHERING OF OUR OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 8 M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. THE SACRAMENT M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give him thanks and praise. M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. By his saints and witnesses of the past he encourages us to run with perseverance the race marked out for us and to live in righteousness and peace. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory forever and ever. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory. You are my God, and I will exalt you. I will give you thanks for you have become my salvation. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of your glory. WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 9

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us your peace. Amen. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS In Trembling Hands, Lord God, We Hold Hymn 199 Be Still, My Soul Hymn 415 Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord Hymn 309 THE BLESSING M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace.
