Sunday, October 28, 2018 Day of Reformation/Confirmation Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Gathering Song Reign In Me Welcome Confession and Forgiveness Let us confess our sin before God and one another. God you come to us, your presence a burning fire in our lives. Forgive us for the times that we have ignored your invitation. Pharaoh s hardened heart declares judgement and death and we are surrounded by fear and hate for those who are not like us. Forgive us for the times that we have been silent in the face of evil. God, you provide our daily bread and nurture every aspect of our lives. Forgive us for the times we complain against you. God for these sins and all the other ways we turn against you we ask for mercy. Bring us out of our selfish ways and help us turn to you. Only God can bring us out of the land of sin and carry us to the promised land of grace and forgiveness. In Christ yours sins are forgiven. In Christ you are accepted. In Christ you are loved. Thanks be to God. Processional Hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Hymnal #504 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe 1
has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. 2 No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God's only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious. 3 Though hordes of devils fill the land all threat'ning to devour us, we tremble not, unmoved we stand; they cannot overpow'r us. Let this world's tyrant rage; in battle we'll engage! His might is doomed to fail; God's judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. 4 God's Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom's ours forever! Text: Martin Luther, 1483-1546; tr. and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day God of change, We give you thanks that this world is not the same as it always was. Thank you for providing inspiration to bring about change in your church and your world. Continue to raise up leaders and send us out to bring life-giving change to your creation. Amen Scripture Reading John 15:9-17 WORD As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. For our walk in this world They resound with God's own heart O let the ancient words impart Ancient words ever true Changing me changing you We have come with open hearts O let the ancient words impart God s Word for the Day Joshua 24:1-8, 12-13, 16-18 A reading from Joshua. Hear God s Word for God s People. Speak, Lord, for your servants are listening. Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac; and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in its midst; and afterwards I brought you out. When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. When they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did to Egypt. Afterwards you lived in the wilderness for a long time. Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan; they fought with you, and I handed them over to you, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove out before you the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and towns that you had not built, and you live in them; you eat the fruit of vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant. Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and 4
the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
