YOUR LEGACY... THEIR FUTURE Leave a gift for tomorrow seva.org/legacy SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY 1

TOGETHER WE CAN ENDOW A BETTER WORLD FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS Dear Donor, Here at Seva we do this work because we believe in the fundamental dignity of every person, regardless of gender, age, nationality or socio-economic status. We know from 40 years of experience that there is a universal truth: restoring sight is one of the most transformational gifts one person can offer to another. Since 1978, Seva has expanded the capacity of our partners and increased opportunity for local communities across the globe. Thanks to the tireless efforts and ingenuity of those who came before, we are poised to eliminate avoidable blindness in our lifetime. On behalf of the board of directors for Seva, our trusted partners and the millions of people, this work has helped to see again, thank you for considering a legacy gift. Yours in Seva, KATE MOYNIHAN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2 SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY

We can t take anything with us, but we can leave behind the values and deeds that are important to us. KEITH GOLDSTEIN, LEGACY DONOR Your legacy... their future After you have remembered your loved ones, include a gift in your Will to Seva Foundation SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY 3

SEVA FOUNDATION: TURNING COMPASSION INTO ACTION Seva Foundation started as a small group with a big idea: to be fully human, we must translate our compassion and concern for others into useful service. Today, Seva Foundation partners worldwide to create self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight. Our vision is a world free of avoidable blindness. Our guiding principles: Serving the Underserved: Our eye care programs serve people who have been economically, politically, or otherwise marginalized. We aim to build a bridge between our donors and the people we serve. Promoting Sustainability: In communities where we work, we share skills and technology, assist local decision-making, and help to support eye clinics and hospitals to become financially self-sufficient into the future. Working Through Partnerships: We develop close relationships with local eye care organizations and community leaders, through trust, mutual respect and cultural understanding so communities have the ability to define their own solutions to the challenges they face. 4 SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY

SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY 5

THE NEED Blindness and vision impairment are major global health problems because they are a systemic condition, one that affects profoundly the entire person, it ranks with hunger as one of the most serious of challenges in the world. Approximately 253 MILLION people worldwide live Of these, 36 MILLION people are blind Every 5 SECONDS a person in the world Nearly 90% of the world s blind with vision impairment. and 217 million have goes blind. people live in developing moderate to severe countries. vision impairment. 6 SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY

UNIVERSAL ACCESS The most common causes of blindness and visual impairment frequently require relatively simple medical procedures: medication for infection, timely treatment of trauma, corrective glasses, or a 15-minute cataract surgery. Though for many, the primary barrier to seeing again is simply lack of access to affordable, quality eye care. Working with local partners, Seva helps increase access to eye care in multiple ways, including providing community outreach to find and counsel rural patients (especially women and girls), transportation and lodging to regional clinics or hospitals, and eye care education through training local community healthcare volunteers and teachers about basic eye health. By breaking down barriers to access, we work to ensure the power of sight is within everyone s reach. More than 1/2 of blind people in the world are women, yet they are the least likely to obtain sight-restoring services. 80% of global blindness is treatable or preventable. 1/2 of the world s blindness is caused by cataracts. In most cases, sight can be restored with a 15-minute surgery costing $50 or less. SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY 7

YOUR LOVED ONES COME FIRST Your Will allows you to take care of your loved ones first. But you can also use your Will to create hope for some of the most vulnerable and poverty-stricken people at home and abroad. Even a gift of a small percentage of your estate can go a long way to help blind people see again. WHAT YOUR LEGACY CAN DO: $1,000 will screen 1,000 children for eye problems, ensuring they receive glasses and needed eye care. $10,000 will facilitate the training of 50 American Indian students studying to be eye care professionals. $25,000 will restore sight to 500 blind people with cataract surgery and change their lives forever. $50,000 will fund 30 eye screening camps in under-served communities. $150,000 will allow 1,000 children to see again through sight-restoring surgery. $500,000 will establish 10 permanent primary eye care vision centers so people in remote communities can access eye care every day. 8 SEVA FOUNDATION LEGACY

NEXT STEPS: A GIFT IN YOUR WILL Leaving a bequest to Seva Foundation in your Will is the simplest way to leave a legacy of sight. Everyone should have a Will and update it on a regular basis.
