St. Florian Catholic Church The Florian Good Morning Welcome Home Ever Historic Ever New! A place of Healing, Light, Beauty, and Hope! Dzien Dobry Buenos Días July 22, 2018 Good morning family! As you can see the bulletin is undergoing a much-needed makeover. We begin with COLOR beautiful COLOR! It is part ofthe overall Beautification project here at St. Florian I hope to lead you in. The Beautiful is a participation in God s Beauty, and draws one in, irresistibly, for an encounter in hope. I thought ofseveral names for the new bulletin The Vision; The Spark, etc. but after speaking with so many parishioners, whose lives and identity intertwine with the parish, it seemed that The Florian encapsulated the sincere essence ofyour heart. A place ofhealing, Hope, Mercy, and Love! I have also, again, after listening to YOU, heard clearly how proud you are ofthe Polish roots and foundation ofthis parish (Jesus, however, is THE ROOT ofall parishes, ofthe stump ofjesse ) Is 11:1. That being firmly acknowledged, we see before our very eyes the beautiful new FLOWERS blossoming from these roots in the rich Hispanic gifts offaith and culture. Freshly blossomed Spring flowers are beautiful to behold and bring a sweet aromatic fragrance to their surroundings. They give HOPE and LIFE. To hold in balance and incorporate these two great GIFTS from the HOLY SPIRIT for the continuing LIFE ofour church, I have coined the motto ofsorts: St. Florian, EVER HISTORIC EVER NEW! As ofthis writing I have personally called around 300 parishioners. It has been a great gift to me, being able to speak with you LISTEN to you and gain an ever-greater clarity and sense ofwhere the desires, hopes, and needs are to minister to. That is how a pastor discovers, and sets, the Vision for the Church entrusted to his pastoral care. I have roughly 300 + calls still to make. I will have to buy some Aspercreme for my elbow when I am finished! But I wouldn t have it any other way. From what I can gather, it is clear there is an EXCITEMENT in the air, which is proving highly contagious. A parishioner said to me on the phone last night that her friends said there is something different about her IN HER an upbeat change is taking place. This is the spark that ignites the fire. The Lord Jesus said, I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already ablaze Lk 12:49. Let s set St. Florian s and you are Florian ABLAZE! You shall be the spark to others that ignites HOPE, HEALING, MERCY, and LOVE. The boiler(s) issue has been addressed this week and we are well on our way to resolving those problems. I am also updating the parish office. The phone system here is terribly antiquated and is being upgraded to be very user friendly, with bi-lingual options for all parishioners. Many ofyou have asked about my non-profit spaghetti sauces for charity Communio (Latin for community) and where they could be purchased. I will begin offering them for sale in the Business Office beginning Monday, July 23 rd during the hours of8:30 1:00 pm. (Monday Friday only). The cost is 6.00 per 24 oz. jar, almost a dollar cheaper than retail prices. The flavors are: Rustic Home Marinara sauce/gravy; Rustic w/fresh sautéed Mushrooms; Premier Vodka Sauce; Chunky & Spicy Fresh Garden; Padre s Leg-Kickin Creole (Ifyour legs don t kick I m a liar!); and Pizza, Parmesan, and Sandwich sauce. All the proceed go directly to local charities. I receive nothing other than a deep satisfaction. Last year Communio Sauces gave away over 10,000 to local charities. They make the best gifts for others, baskets, etc. and have proven to be a fantastic fundraiser offering. Let s face it, the popcorn balls, peanuts, and chocolate bars are getting tired and passé, going the way oftupperware parties and shag rugs! I have so much to say, and so little room. That s o.k., I, hopefully, will have many years to share my ministry and life with you. I wouldn t have it any other way.

July 22, 2018 Page 5 ST. JOHN PAUL II Karol Wojtyla was born in 1920, the youngest of three children in Wadowice, Poland. Karol was a brilliant student with a natural facility for languages and a love for music and theater. Eventually he would learn at least 12 different languages, an asset he would use again and again in the world travels that marked his papacy. Due to the German occupation of Poland during World War II, Wojtyla had to attend seminary classes held in secret at the Archbishop's residence in Krakow. With his personal history of friendships with Jews, he would become the first pope to pray at a synagogue and at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. At just 58, Cardinal Wojtyla was elected pope in October 1978, a few months after the sudden death of John Paul I. The second longest serving papacy in Church history, Pope John Paul II's tenure sparkles with significant achievements including: improved relations with Jews, Muslims and Orthodox Christians; a revised and updated Catechism of the Catholic Church; fourteen papal encyclicals, including the On Labor, Faith and Reason and the oflife; unwavering support for Church teaching on abortion and euthanasia; a renewed effort for evangelization; and staunch advocacy for peace. He was also known for his deep devotion to the Blessed Mother: ST. JOHN XXIII Angelo Roncalli was born in 1881, in Sotto Il Monte, Italy. His parents were tenant farmers. An excellent student who entered the seminary at 12 years old, at eighteen, he wrote: "Everything I possess, my being, life, understanding, will and memory-all were given to me by God, so I belong to him." At the age of71, he was elevated to the rank ofcardinal. In 1958 he attended the conclave of cardinals to elect a new pope after the death of Pope Pius XII. Never expecting to become pope, as the story is told, he had a return train ticket back to Venice in his pocket, which, of course, he would never use. Pope John XXIII's major accomplishments included improving ecumenical relations, reforming and revising the liturgy, fostering a greater role for the laity in Church governance, and, his landmark achievement, the convening of Vatican II. He will be remembered also for his humility, warmth and gentle sense ofhumor. "Anybody can become pope," he once said, "the proof of this is I have become one." Pope John issued eight encyclicals. Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) is considered his most important contribution to Church teaching. Mother of the Church, Prepare us for your Son's coming! Accept us! With our everyday problems, our weaknesses and deficiencies, our crises, and personal, family and social shortcomings. Do not let us lose goodwill! Do not let us lose sincerity of conscience and uprightness of behavior! With your prayer, obtain justice for us. Safeguard peace in the whole world! Amen. Lord Jesus Christ, you are called the Prince ofpeace, you are yourself our peace and reconciliation, you so often said, "peace to you," grant us peace. Make all men and women witnesses oftruth, justice and brotherly love. Banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and defend the great gift of peace. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters. May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. PRAYER TO THE MOTHER OF THE CHURCH, ST. JOHN PAUL II PRAYER FOR PEACE, ST. JOHN XXIII
