Programme Sunday 15 October Monday 16 October 10:00 10:30 Registration Location: Entrance of the Jewish Museum of Venice 10:30 11:15 Welcome by the Jewish Museum of Venice and the AEJM 11:15 13:15 Guided tour of the Synagogues Francesco Trevisan Gheller 13:15 14:15 Lunch offered by the Jewish Museum of Venice 14:15 15:45 Guided tour of the Jewish Museum of Venice Francesco Trevisan Gheller and Roberta Favia 15:45 16:15 Coffee Break The Jewish Museum of Venice is situated in the Campo of the Ghetto Novo, between the three most ancient Venetian synagogues. It is a small but very rich museum founded in 1953 by the Jewish Community of Venice. 16:15 18:00 Collection Focus Presentations of case-studies on Italian objects in Jewish museums across Europe by participants Location: Education Room 19:30 Optional group dinner at Ogio Ristorante Caffè Contemporaneo Please register in advance 9:00 10:30 Lecture Italian Ceremonial Art Dr Vivian B. Mann 10:30 11:00 Coffee Break This lecture by Vivian Mann, Director Emerita of the MA Programme in Jewish Art at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Curator Emerita of the Jewish Museum New York, will focus on the most significant forms of Italian ceremonial art and will consider their origin in the Judaica of Spain and their presence in other countries of the Sephardi diaspora. It will also focus on the impact of Renaissance and Baroque art on Italian Judaica. 11:00 13:00 Workshop I Italian-Jewish Ceremonial Art Dr Vivian B. Mann The workshop will closely examine the structure and iconography of representative examples of Italian Judaica, both typical examples and unusual works, and will highlight the specific problems related to media: textiles, metalwork, and wood. 13:00 14:00 Individual lunch break 14:00 17:30 Excursion Jewish Cemetery Aldo Izzo In 1386 the Republic of Venice gave the Jews the possibility to create a cemetery of their own, giving them a non cultivated piece of land in St. Nicholas of Lido. The fall of the Venetian Republic, foreign occupations and consequent vandalistic acts, as well as a changing climate led to the disappearance of many monuments and to the ruin of the Jewish cemetery. In the 19th century part of the cemetery was expropriated and bound to other uses. In 1999 a big work of restoration was undertaken: many memorials have been saved and classified. Meeting point: Campo di Ghetto Novo, in front of the museum 3

Programme Tuesday 17 October Wednesday 18 October 8:30 Departure to Padua from Venice Train Station Meeting Point: big clock at the entrance 9:00 12:15 Excursion Jewish Heritage of Padova The Jewish Museum of Padova is located in Sinagoga Tedesca, the former German synagogue, which was inaugurated in 1525 in the heart of the Jewish ghetto in the city s historic center. The synagogue was severely damaged during World War II when it was torched by local Fascists, and it stood derelict until it was completely rebuilt in 1998. The ark was transferred to Tel Aviv in 1956. The Jewish cemetery near the Old Town has been restored and is beautifully maintained by the Jewish community. Opened in 1529, with more than 90 tombs from the 16th century, it is the oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in Padova and one of five Jewish cemeteries that remain in the city. 12:15 13:00 Group lunch in Padova 13:00 14:00 Return to Venice 14:30 16:00 Workshop II Textiles Dr Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek 16:00 16:30 Coffee Break The Jewish Museum in Venice holds a significant collection of precious textile manufactures. We will explore in what ways Italian parokhot, meilim, binders and reader s desk covers differ from or resemble ceremonial textiles in Jewish museums collections we visited during the previous curatorial seminars. The workshop will deepen knowledge gained through Vivian Mann s lecture and workshop. 9:50 Meeting point: Fondazione Querini Stampalia 10:00 11:30 Exhibition visit The House of Life The House of Life, a poetic and expansive installation by Hadassa Goldvicht (IL), explores themes of historical memory, the threshold between life, death, myth, and art, and the rapidly changing nature of Venice, via a multi-channel video work. The exhibition follows the 86-year-old Aldo Izzo, once the captain of a large merchant vessel and now the guardian and keeper of the Jewish cemeteries in Venice. Curated by Amitai Mendelsohn, The Israel Museum Location: Fondazione Querini Stampalia 11:30 13:00 Individual Lunch Break 13:00 14:30 Workshop III Metal Objects Dr Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek 14:30 15:00 Coffee Break The workshop will expand on Vivian Mann s lecture and workshop. As the Jewish Museum of Venice holds a rich collection of silver Judaica objects, we will have the opportunity to work with numerous items. We will explore some more examples of Venetian Baroque ceremonial objects and try to identify their makers. We will also learn how the Baroque tradition was transferred into the taste and fashion of later periods. 15:00 16:30 Continuation of Workshop III 17:00 18:00 Reflection & Discussion Location: Jewish Museum of Venice 19:30 Group Dinner on invitation by the Jewish Museum of Venice, at Restaurant Ghimel Garden 16:30 18:30 Collection Focus Continuation of presentations of case-studies by participants Location: Education Room 4

Programme Thursday 19 October 9:00 10:30 Workshop IV Manuscripts & Printed Books Dr Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek 10:30 11:00 Coffee Break The Jewish Museum of Venice holds an important selection of manuscripts and rare books. We will see a variety of books that made Venetian Jewish book trade famous. Furthermore we will see a copy of the first book of Maimonides Mishne Torah, the Sefer hamadda, from the beginning of the 15th century as well as a private handwritten Siddur for Yom Kippur from the end of the 19th century. The workshop will enhance what we will have learned in Vivian Mann s lecture and workshop. 11:00 12:30 Continuation of Workshop IV 12:30 13:30 Individual lunch break 13:30-14:30 Reflection & Discussion Dr Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek and Dr Michaela Feurstein-Prasser The Jewish Museum of Venice is not only a gallery, but also an exhibition area set in a very specific, complex urban Jewish space. At the beginning of our upcoming Venice A-CEP we will form small groups of 4 to 5 participants who will have the time throughout the week to take a closer look at the permanent exhibition and to reflect on some questions we will provide concerning the concept of the museum in its specific surroundings. Each group will prepare a recapitulation of the outcomes and on Thursday afternoon we will explore our thoughts as a group. Location: Education Room 14:30 15:30 Closing Session Feedback & Evaluation 5
