Bible Reading & Memorization Plan For 2019 Your words are what sustain me. They bring me great joy and are my heart s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty. Jeremiah 15:16

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Romans 1:16 Name 2

Why Do I Need A Bible Reading Plan? Reading the Bible is the primary way we can hear and learn from the God who created us. He loves us deeply and knows what is best for us. But too many Christians seldom listen. Could these words from Hebrews describe you? 11 There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don t seem to listen. 12 You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13 For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn t know how to do what is right. 14 Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong. Hebrews 5:11-14 (NLT) Eight good reasons to listen to God daily through His Word: 1. So my prayers will be answered. (John 15:7) 2. So my decisions will be wise. (Psalm 32:8) 3. So I will not sin. (Psalm 119:11) 4. So I can find comfort. (Psalm 119:52) 5. So I can get the most out of life. (Joshua 1:8) 6. So I can know what is true. (Acts 17:11) 7. So I can be close to God and learn from Him. (Hebrews 10:22) 8. So I will have hope. (Romans 15:4) 3

We Have A Choice We can keep doing the same thing and keep getting the same results or we can try something new in an effort to develop the habit of listening to God daily through His Word. It should be every Christ follower s goal to be so immersed in the Word that they will continue to change their habits, priorities and behaviors to be more and more like Christ. This will only happen if we make the choice to read and meditate on the Bible daily, and strive to hide God s Word in our hearts. 20. 21. 22. Will you make that choice? Will you take the Life Change Challenge? 9. The Life Change Challenge: 10. Because 11. I understand that God wants to speak to me daily through His 12. Word, and because I realize that feeding my spirit on Scripture daily 13. is necessary for my growth in Christ, and because the Bible is a light 14. to guide my decisions and a sword to defend me from the clever 15. attacks of Satan, I hereby commit, with the help of the Holy Spirit, 16. I will endeavor to do the following: 17. 18. 1. Read the Bible daily in 2019, not just to turn pages or move 19. a bookmark, but to deepen my relationship with God and to better understand and obey the will of God. 2. Look for a key verse or idea in each day s reading to focus and meditate on, allowing God to speak more clearly to my 23. heart through that verse or idea. 24. 3. Memorize Bible verses that will help me live out and share my faith in Christ, because Scripture clearly talks about 4 remembering God s Word and hiding it in my heart.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Bible 1. Choose a Bible reading plan. This book contains a Bible reading plan that was designed to give a broad overview of the whole Bible, plus take the reader through the entire New Testament, all of Psalms, and all of Proverbs twice. Daily readings are kept relatively brief to avoid information overload. Alternative reading plans are also listed on page 7. 2. Read every day. How much you read is not nearly as important as how often you read. Find a Bible reading plan you believe will work best for you, then follow that plan daily. If you do miss a day or more, don t let it discourage you. If you mess up, don t beat yourself up, or give up, or try to catch up. Simply start back up with the current day s reading and go on from there. Here are some other tips to help you read daily: a. Establish a routine. Determine a quiet place you can sit down with your Bible, and a time each day when you can sit down for a few minutes of uninterrupted time with God. b. Choose a reader-friendly Bible translation. The better you can understand what you read, the more you can benefit from what you read. The New International Version or New Living Translation work well for most adults. The Message is a paraphrase of the Bible that is also popular. 3. Listen as you read. Remember that the goal is to hear from God how you can better live for God. Your focus should be on gaining insights that lead to life change, not just turning pages. 4. Key in on a zinger verse: As you read, when you come upon a verse you think God might want you to zero in and meditate on, circle or 5

write down the verse number, then continue reading. If other verses also seem to jump out at you, note those verse numbers also. When you have finished your reading, glance back over the marked verses and decide which verse you will key in on and allow God to speak to you through. This will be your zinger verse. Reflect and meditate more on that verse to determine how God wants you to apply that verse to your life today. 5. Write down your discovery: You ll be amazed at how much it helps just to write down a paragraph or two that describes what you heard from the Lord in that zinger verse. It also allows you to go back at a later date and review what you discovered, or to share your insights with someone else. Many people are intimidated by the thought of journaling, but it is actually pretty simple and very worthwhile. A sample journal entry is provided on page 8 to give you one idea of how to do this. 6. Share your discovery: By establishing an accountability partner and exchanging your journal entries, you will find yourself motivated and excited to get into the Word each day. Just give it a try and see for yourself! 7. Pray: Pray before you read for God to help you hear His voice in the pages of Scripture. Pray after you read that God will empower you to apply what you have learned and make whatever life change is needed. If you mess up, don t beat yourself up, or give up, or try to catch up. Simply start back up 6

Some Bible Reading Plan Options: 1. The Reading Plan in this Book Most days the reading is only one or two short chapters. The first 12 weeks provide an overview of the Bible. The following 40 weeks cover the entire New Testament, Psalms, and twice through the book of Proverbs.. 2. Through the Bible in A Year If you would rather do this, we recommend Wayne Cordeiro s Life Journal reading plan. You can find more information about this plan at www.lifejournal.cc 3. Through the New Testament in a year. Various plans can be found on the internet, or you may contact University Christian Church in Muncie (765-284-0896) for information on a NT plan developed by Christian Counselor, Charley Gerber. 4. Section by Section reading Instead of reading chapters at a time, you can follow the section headings in the NIV translation and read one section each day for a year. 5. Other options - Many Study Bibles and Christian websites offer reading plans as well. A Simple Way to Journal Your Daily Discovery: The Z.I.P.P. method works great for jotting down your insights. First date and title your entry, then follow the format below: Z = Zinger verse. Write down the verse you focused on to hear from God. I Insights. Jot down in a sentence or two what your observations are regarding the passage. Who was writing this and who were the first readers? What was the setting, etc.? P Practical Application. What is God teaching you through this verse? What life change do you need to make in response to this discovery? P Prayer. In a sentence or two, write a prayer to the Lord about the life change you need to make. See a sample entry on the next page. 7

Date 5/1 Title Time to Put On the Gloves Zinger: Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12 Insight: As Paul closes out his letter to Timothy, he tells Timothy to fight the good fight. Paul is reminding Timothy that the Christian life is not for pansies. Living a life of faith is not a walk in the park. It s a fight. We must fight our own selfish desires and our human tendencies to live for what is seen rather than living for eternity. We must fight the urge to live for the applause of men rather than for the glory of God. Practical Application: There are times in my life when I am not enough of a fighter. Instead of fighting off the selfish nature, I surrender and make excuses or procrastinate. Instead of holding my tongue and fighting against anger, I surrender and say something harsh or unkind. Instead of fighting to maintain the humility God commands, I surrender to pride. If I want to be like Jesus, I have to put up more of a fight when these kinds of situations arise. It s time for me to man up, put on the gloves, and_ fight the good fight. Prayer: Father, forgive my indifference in certain aspects of my Christian walk. Empower me through your Spirit and help me to put on my Spiritual armor and to fight the good fight of the faith, even in the so called trivial aspects of obedience. 8

The Fab Fifty Memory Verses Week 1 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 Week 2 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Week 3 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34 Week 4 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5 Week 5 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 Week 6 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 Week 7 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 Week 8 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 for man s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James 1:19-20 Week 9 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 16

The Fab Fifty Memory Verses Week 10 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 Week 11 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2 Week 12 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
