Just a closer walk with Thee. Grant it, Jesus, is my plea. Daily walking close to Thee. Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. original composer unknown This song has been running in my mind off and on all afternoon. And as annoying as it is whenever I cannot get a song out of my head, I have to say this could be worse. More often than not my mind is taken over by some obnoxious advertising jingle last heard twenty years ago. Truly, at this moment Just a Closer Walk is the cry of my heart. Especially as the season of Lent quickly approaches, I hope that a closer walk with Jesus will be your burning desire as well. For those unfamiliar with Lent, this is a period of 40 days (not counting 6 Sundays) which begins on Ash Wednesday (February 14 th this year) and extends all the way up to the Easter celebration. Christians for many centuries have used this time for repentance, for setting aside our worldly passions and desires, and for focusing our time on that which will ultimately draw us into a closer walk with Jesus. It is customary to embrace fasting from certain foods and heightened intensity in prayer. A closer walk with Jesus does not happen automatically. On the one hand, faith is a gift that only God can grant. But each of us has certain habits that make it easier or harder for us to receive this holy treasure. I hope that upon reading these words, you will pause for a moment to consider what practices lead you into the presence of the Lord? Among many possibilities your answer certainly could include studying Scripture, prayer, regular worship attendance, generous giving, and yes, even fasting. I want to encourage you, at least for the Lenten season to challenge yourselves. To try whatever it takes to walk more closely with Jesus. I look forward to journeying with you in the days ahead. Yours in Christ, Pastor Steve Dun

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE Again this year, the community churches have been invited to come together for the Ash Wednesday Service at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Wednesday, February 14 at. This is an opportunity for us to gather as a community to celebrate Ash Wednesday. All are encouraged to attend to represent FUMC. GOD IS CALLING OUT TO YOU, HAVE YOU HEARD IT? Throughout the upcoming season of Lent, Farmville UMC invites you to join us for this interactive weekly study of the life and message of the Apostle Paul. We will especially be exploring Paul's powerful calling from God, and what such a calling might have to do with our own lives. This study will take place on Tuesdays at 2pm and Wednesdays at 7pm beginning February 20. You may attend whichever time best accommodates your schedule.we will be studying the Bible, and nothing more will be strictly necessary. But if you wish to make the most of this experience, purchasing your own copy of "The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul" is strongly recommended. Copies are available on amazon.com ranging from $10 for an electronic copy to $13 for a hardbound book. REGARDING CHURCH SAFETY Hello friends, I just wanted to share an update with you as Trustees and individuals who have been involved in ongoing conversations regarding church safety. Some time ago, I reached out to Chief Greene and Sergeant Tyndall of the Farmville PD to gauge their willingness to discuss with us several matters of church safety. After going back and forth with ideas a couple of times, they proposed the following idea: Because the Farmville PD has received several requests from various churches on the same range of topics, they would like to offer a planned presentation to include members of Farmville PD, Fire Department, and EMS. This will be loosely based on something similar that has been offered by the Lenoir County Sheriff's Department. They would like to host key leaders, perhaps 5-6 people from interested churches to attend one presentation, with time built in for Q and A. Today, Sergeant Tyndall asked if we would be willing to host, and I said yes without hesitation. The date is still to be determined. Stay tuned. For those who may not have been involved in every part of the conversation in our church so far, we potentially have some funds and interested givers available who would like to see our church make an effort to be prepared in case of emergencies (medical, criminal, natural disaster, etc.) And our conversation has mostly been about policies and technological solutions we can pursue while maintaining the most welcoming and open facility possible. Again, there should be more information to follow. Thanks for all that each of you do! -Pastor Steve FUMW will meet on Monday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 in the church parlor. Cindy Parks will present the program. All women are invited to attend. Methodist Men are planning a late-april BBQ Chicken fundraiser to support the purchase of a defibrillator for church. More info to follow. PERSONAL FINANCIAL PEASE WORKSHP We are trying to organize a series of evening meetings for a personal financial peace workshop to be based on the Dave Ramsey approach. If you have an interest in participating, or if you want more info, please contact David Monroe at 252-327-3561 or by email at david.monroe01@gmail.com.
